Shotgun upgrade

I am looking for some advice – I am planning to upgrade my current lanber o/u game shotgun. My plan was to trade in the lanber and my .223 rifle (CZ527 laminate) because I really don’t seem to have enough time in my hands anymore to go out with the .223 and the lanber is bit heavy and clumsy while out in the field. Any recommendations for a field/game/hunting shotgun up to 1500EUR? Cheers.

What are your preferences? O/U, Semi auto, pump?

Also any brand in particular you are keen on? Beretta, Browning, etc.

Your budget is a nice one. It'll give you all sorts of options in terms of new and top quality second hand ones. Seen a dealer in the last week with two Berettas. One a 682 and the other a 686. Both are the Gold Sporting and in great condition. One was €1,400 and the other €1,250.

Also a new semi auto would be no more than €1,700. So second hand ones are well within your budget. Or go that little extra and buy new.

Thanks Cass.. I have only shot o/u and that one for several years now, I dont think I need a semi auto and definitely not a pump. I have been looking at Browning, but hear and read that Beretta would be a good one too... I am happy to go with a second hand one....
I need to sell both my guns first, and the easy option would be to go to a dealer and do a swap?

    O/U it is.

Browning are a good make no doubt, but everyone will have their preferences. Look back at any thread like this one and you'll see certain lads will always recommend the same makes. For me it's always Beretta. For fit, quality, performance, etc. i think they cannot be beaten.

The first and most important advice is to go out and try some makes. It's no good me recommending a gun if it simply will not shoulder for you. A clay range, or shop with range onto it would be the best bet. Second to that would be go to a few shops and try out some. Once you have a few that you feel comfortable with you can start to narrow down the list.

For your budget i'd look at Beretta in :
    • 682 Gold E (Sporting)
    • 686 Gold E (Sporting)
    • Silver Pigeon (Game)

    In Browning look at:
    • Cynergy (Sporting)
    • Citori (Game)

Don't look pass Semi-Auto until you've had the chance to shoulder a few. They are great fun, have an extra shot, and are usually lighter so easy to carry all day. For hunting they are my preferred choice of gun. Here is my Beretta Semi-Auto (any chance to show it :D)

If a dealer will take both as a trade then yes. Some will not as they have two guns and only selling one. Failing that stick up an advert here for both guns, sell them and buy cash. You'll be in a stronger position. Plus even if you only sell one you can trade the other and use the cash of the sale to make up the difference.

The most important thing to remember is not what you paid for the gun or who gun the maker of the gun is [but its nice to have good quality].its if the gun fits you personally.i shoot a browning rifle and shotgun as it fits me.so try as many as you can.

Hi Cass is that the a400 you have? I'm looking into getting a semi auto.I already have a o/u 682 great gun looking to add the a400 but I'm seeing a very big difference in price anything from €1250 new and anything up to €2000, any idea why there is such a big difference in price?

No, It's the Beretta AL391 Teknys Stonecoat Field.

The A400 is a different, newer model. The price differences is down to the half a dozen or so different models. From the base model to the top of the range. However the dearest i've seen them is €1,850.

    +1

If you are not far from Ballymahon, head over to Dave Muvihill. He has an enviable amount of shotguns.

Fit, feel, shouldering, and swinging a shotgun, in person, means more to me than most reviews.

I deal with the same few dealers each time. This is from years of shopping around and consistency getting the best deals from them. However they may not suit you in terms of stock availability, distance to travel, etc.

    Where are you? County wise.

In Louth - I got offered a Beretta 682 Gold E, but need to go and have a look at it first. Is this model just for sporting, ie clay shooting or suitable for hunting as well as I will do more hunting than clays.

What's the process for selling the guns, I assume I need to leave them at a dealer, then sort out the licence surrender for guns sold and apply for a new licence for the new shotgun?

Had one up till last year.

Absoultely cracking gun, and i went for it over a DT10 because the fit of it suited better, and the stock was much nicer than the DT10.

It is a sporting gun. Under 8 lbs so heavy enough if you're carrying it around all day. Ideally suited to clays, but i used mine for both clays and hunting however as i said above it is heavy and after a half day you knew you were carrying it.

other than that a superb gun. Cannot oversell it's quality. Now obsolete, and replaced with the 692 so prices should be lowering. Expect to pay at a max €1,500 for a mint condition one. Not bad as they ran between €2,950 - €3,200 new.

In a nut shell - yes.

Use an FCA1 to substitute to your new gun, and FCA2 to cancel any license for a second/third gun you are trading but not subbing.

I've a beretta 686 and cannot recommend them enough.ive had mine for years and give it nothing but dogs abuse and have never had any problems with it at all. Tannyoky guns are about 15 minutes from newry in the north. The shop is owned by 2 irish shotgun shooters and they usually have hundreds of shotguns in stock. From 50 pound baikals to 20000 pound krieghoffs. Their well worth a visit. Not that far from you altogether. There's a lot of shooters from the south buys their guns from them. They seem to be much cheaper for guns.
