Just one point folks may want to take into account - the new format for the Qualifiers where teams from Group A will be drawn against other teams from Group A and teams in Group B will only be drawn against teams in Group B.

Group A: Donegal, Derry, Fermanagh, Antrim, Tipperary, Limerick, Cork, Galway, London, Sligo, Wicklow, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Wexford, Dublin

Group B: Tyrone, Down, Armagh, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Waterford, Kerry, Leitrim, Roscommon, Mayo, Westmeath, Louth, Kildare, Carlow, Meath

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭SureYWouldntYa

Whats the reasoning behind this ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,256 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

At least there's no chance of Roscommon being knocked out by Tyrone in the qualifiers............Again

There's every chance of that! Both teams are in Group B.

    Thanks for that.
Is it a case that the last two alive from each group will end up in the quarters ?
If that is the case I have to adjust my qualifier picks.

Group A looks a hell of a lot easier than B when you remove the potential provincial winners

I'm not clear on the Quarter Finals, but as they are part of the 'All Ireland Series' rather than than Qualifiers, I would assume that A vs A and B vs B only applies for Rounds 1 -4 in the Qualifiers. And yes, essentially the last two alive in each Group will make the Quarter-Finals as far as I can see....

Also, there is no restriction on provincial rematches in Rounds 1 and 2, but the restriction that two teams who have met before cannot meet again comes back into play in Rounds 3 and 4....

I certainly agree that Group A looks weaker, but that's probably a discussion for a thread on its own.

These groups are not actually correct.

For example the Munster final loser plays a 3rd round winner from the A qualifier 'stream'.
So Kerry could loose the Munster final and thus end up playing in A rather than being in B as the poster suggests.

So I think the permutations of who may or may not make it to the quarters via the qualifiers is not as clear cut as above

I took the groups verbatim from this article in the Indo

I would have thought that if Cork lose the Munster Final, they play a team from Group A. Whereas if Kerry lose the Munster Final, they play a team from Group B.

What are you basing this comment on?

Each provincial champion has a A and a B side, in other words a top and bottom half, and when you lose (before the final) you go into the A or B qualifier side.

In the list you gave you can see which side of the provincial draw each team is in.

But here is where it gets mixed up, the Connaught and Munster losers go into the A side of the qualifiers, that is pre determine regardless of which side of the provincial draw they were on.
So if Kerry lost in the Munster SF they would be in the B side of the qualifiers, but if they lost the final they would be in the A side.

Ulster and Leinster losers go to the B side.

It's on the fixtures list on the GAA website

    Let me stop you there....

I see what you mean however. Round 4 does seem to have semi predetermined pairings.

But, from the article I linked to:
There will be no restriction on provincial rematches in Rounds 1 and 2, but it will apply from there on.

Suggests that certain teams will have to be kept apart in Round 4.
