I use Dewey rods for my rifles, I find them really good. As for suppliers in Ireland, it's something I always found scarce is various gun shops around the country. I buy them direct from Dewey themselves. Just email them and it's no bother.

Many thanks,I was just wondering where is this company based then and are the expensive to get posted/shipped?

    They are american made.

The last time I ordered stuff, it was 2 rods, and various brushes and mops and jags. The shipping was 32 dollars if I remember right. But a one piece rod is definatly the way to go.

I recently got a parker hale rod for my 17 from Knocknagoshel Shooting Grounds. They may not be as high quality as the Dewey rods but they are still more than adequete, especially for those of us who look after our equipment :-)

    Hope it helps :-)

I just use the rods for the brush to loosen up the crud in the barrel, for patches I use a homemade pull through and kitchen paper

Then I've got a oily-ish wool mop on another rod for giving a rub through the dry finished barrell if I'm putting the gun away for a while. It's o good idea to get rid of oil residue before shooting the rifle though, as the high pressure can drive oil into the pores and over time cause unnecessary damage/wear to your rifle bore. Mind you, it's not the end of the world if you forget :-)

It's basically a boresnake. Actually it is a boresnake. Just in a different format.

I find Methylated spirits is great for this. It "pushes" the oil out if you patch out the bore about 3 times after cleaning but as Meth spirits does not act like oil, does not burn onto/into the bore it's effective in removing excess oil and then leaving no harmful residue for the next time you fire the gun.

I have a Pro-Shot one piece rod. I also use a Pro-Shot bore guide (with multiple caliber adaptors), and caliber specific jags, brushs, mops, all from Pro--Shot. It was the only one piece .17hmr rod i could find, but if i had the choice it would be either Pro-Shot or Bore-Tech. About the best money can buy however as one poster above said one piece rods are something i do not see regularly in any gun shop which is surprising given the need for them.

I picked up a Parker hale one piece rod in cresent sports last week,
I have a 3 piece hoppes rod, I cringe when using the 3 piece, just waiting for it to snap.
Problem now is the hoppes brushes/mops aren't compatible with the Parker hale rod, does anyone know what make is compatible with Parker hale,

Not as much standardization in this business as we might like. So the Dewey adapters may help. Click the link and scroll down and you will see .30 and .22 adapters for Parker Hale rods listed.

I also have the Dewey coated rods. They work very well and do a fine job. The handles are a little small for my preference. I would like to try a Tipton fiber rod but they are not readily available where I am and expensive to order. The high quality stainless and coated rods work fine. I run the rod through a rag after every pass down the barrel to clean any residue off the coating.

Many thanks for all your input .I think for me the dewey one piece rod seems to be the best way for me to go but I was just wondering will the one rod suit both the cz.17 and the cz .22lr or will I need seprate rods etc.???

If you get a .17 rod can be used for both do it myself with proshot rod

Thanks,I will go that way so.I presume I will just get all the different ends to suit both???(brush/mop/etc)

Yes you can get brushes and jags for the patches in both .17 and .22 calibers, and Dewey adaptors for your PH rod if needed. You can probably get mops too, although a .22 mop might fit a .177 bore, I don't shoot .17 so for mops not sure.

I just brush and patch the bore. You dont need a mop to clean the bore (but can use one if you wish). I only use mops for the chambers. I put a .30 cal or a shotgun patch over the mop of appropriate size, and tightly swab the chamber with a solvent patch and then a dry patch to clean out any remaining residue, after cleaning the bore.

Not sure about patches but I bet you could readily adapt .22 patches to .17, or just get 2 sizes of patch if you wish. I shoot and clean my .243 less often. So I usually just cut my .30 patches or old clean cotton rags to make a tight fit in the bore (rather than buy and stock .243 specific patches).

Personally I chose boretech and I found them great couldn't complain about them find them bout the best rod I own and I have own/used a lot of cleaning rods..I got mine on this website in a group buy.

All of those discussed here are decent rods. To me Boretech and Tipton are at the top of the line. Then Dewey and ProShot. Opinions will vary, your mates in ROI will know where to buy. All of them are good and will work. I like the coated rods, would prefer a carbon fiber rod (Tipton), but I have used polished stainless rods which are very good as well.

I can't get anything but Dewey or ProShot where I live, so opted for the Dewey coated. It was not worth ordering a more expensive rod and paying shipping on top, those available at the local store are good enough.

Main thing is to get one of the right length, strength, and size for your bore, and one that will readily adapt the accessories (brushes etc) that you need.
