They're very much in the minority though.

If you rely on that model you'll end up with 1 Suarez and 50 piles of ****.

For a club to rely on it, especially in a league with the quality of the PL is suicide.

That's what scouts are for, its not like youre picking them up at random. Porto and many other European clubs use something similar to this model

I said this at the end of the season. Lucas can really only play one position for us, and that's as the anchor of the midfield. Gerrard took that place and now we've got Emre Can who you'd think will be looking to also fill that role. Given that Lucas doesn't look effective in a more advanced role, all of a sudden he looks very redundant.

If we're going to play a 1-2 in midfield, then you're looking at something like this.

    Gerrard (Can)
    - Henderson/Coutinho/Can/Allen

Think we're likely to see more of Teixeira and Rossiter to plug the gaps and maybe feature if the cup games.

I largely agree on Lucas, but he is also very experienced and we have no idea how Can will settle. If Gerrard has any kind of injury, we are then relying on a new arrival, a young guy with no PL experience. That's a risk.
Unless we get a good offer for him, I don't think we'd take that risk.

Agree. Only concern for me is that Lucas and Agger seem like excellent pros who get on about their business quietly and would bring a good sense of balance and calm to a team / dressing room. Would be a shame to lose them both in the same year. If for example Gerrard starts suffering more injuries (likely after no break for World Cup) we'd be short of experienced players in the team.

I think we could survive without Agger moreso. We have 4 experienced CBs, and Ilori, Kelly (who apparently will be given a chance to impress), Wisdom at a push and Lloyd Jones. I think we could lose Agger and not replace him, at a push.
But I still think we'll sign a CB, with Agger making way...

I'd rather lose Lucas than Agger.

Stupendous work, sir. You've won the internet.

I've made my opinion on Agger clear by now, but again, he is the one who should make way for me. He'll still fetch around 10M. After all, he is the captain of his national team and is a ball playing CB which which will appeal to certain clubs, and if he moves abroad, he won't be typically bullied by opposing forwards like he does in England, so he'll probably do alright.

Lucas is on low enough wages (stand to be corrected), and is a good guy to have around the place, let alone what he can offer on the pitch when not playing alongside Gerrard, as that pairing quite clearly doesn't work whatsoever. Lucas showed alongside Allen and Henderson looked fine for the most part against Spurs, Man City and Chelsea that he can still play a role of called upon. If he wants to leave however, that changes things, but I think he'll stick around for another season.

Porto wouldn't have CL if they were in the PL; and they wouldn't be able to buy the players they do either due to work permit restrictions, etc.

Villa's approach hasn't worked. Signing six Joe Colesque free agents probably wouldn't work either, but posts implying that Villa were right in their thing are, well, wrong. They definitely need to move away from their recent transfer policy if they want to push on.

Lucas won't be willing to go from a first name on the team sheet to starting a handful of games every season. Would be fairly certain of that. I could actually see Benitez making a move for him and Serie A might just suit him to a tee.

I'd sell Agger to Napoli (Pennant is possibly on his way there!) but keep Lucas, no one can know how well or quickly Can will adapt, could hit an instant hit could take 6 months. With 4 comps next season there really ought to be enough games to go around for the midfield. The CBs are going to be well stocked with the proposed move for a new CB like Lovren.

Young, cheap players is a great market to shop in. Wouldn't be relying on them to carry your team, but remember that:

Suarez cost Groningen £800K at 19 and then Ajax €7.5 million aged 20.
Ozil moved to Werder Bremen at 20 for €4.3m
Van Persie cost £2.75m at the age of 21

There's great value in signing young players before they make their big breakthrough

But you can get Joe Cole for free.

Iv noticed no major concerns about Portos interest in Suso, somehow I can see them selling him on in 4/5 years time for €20m+ they generate so much money from player sales.

Villa's approach hasn't worked for a variety of reasons. They have bought some decent young players like Benteke, Weimann, Delph and El Ahmadi but too many of their other signings have not worked. The above players need to be supplemented with a bit of experience (not Joe Cole) and better players around them.

I think Lambert has been very disappointing at Villa also.

Liverpool have found a very good balance:
    Old head - Gerrard
Experienced Internationals - Agger, Skrtel, Suarez, Johnson . . .
    Young - Sturridge, Allen, Henderson
Even Younger - Sterling, Coutinho, Flanagan

would still take Delph from Villa if the fee was reasonable though

His trasfer fee would STILL be too dear.

Now if he paid Villa c. £2m a year in transfer fees...

I would not. Like him as a player but not at Liverpool.

Yep - we should be waaay past looking at players like that.
We got Can for probably a similar fee...that's a no brainer!

    Is Alberto on the way?

Whose idea was it to sign him?

    It worked out well

Lovren follows LeBron on twitter. Time for one of our owners to step in and have a word with the lad and give him a signed shirt :pac:

Edit; he also follows Justin Bieber maybe we really don't need him that bad after all :D

Does anyone remember Lovren RTing and interacting with loads of LFC fans on Twitter last year before Southampton signed him?

    EDIT: I'm not crazy!

Lovren has really gone mad retweeting any Liverpool fan that tweets him, very unusual for a player to do that
