He really, really didn't overreact. The only people I've heard saying this are Liverpool fans who feel the need to say so in order to defend Sterling. Anybody without an agenda could perfectly understand Valencia's reaction.

Its a week before the World Cup and somebody tackles you like that, you are going to be upset. It's a friendly a week before such a massive occasion and it should be treated as such.

Now......... Sterling is playing for his place and wants to prove he deserves to start. It's understandable why he put in a strong tackle like that......but for the vast majority out there, their places are assured and they just don't want to end up like Montolivo and break their legs.

Did you see any of the england players over-reacting with some of the Honduras tackles the last day? Managed to keep 11 men on the pitch.

I know what you're saying with the WC being a week out and it'd be hard to keep your cool but it is an over reaction regardless. Valencia doesnt want to miss the WC but shoving your hand into the face/neck of an opponent is an over-reaction. He could have gone up to sterling shouted in his face, show him his ankle, gesticulated, chested him etc etc. instead of grabbing him by the throat.

It was a red card challenge, no different to the one Henderson made against City. Went high and over the ball , once you're no longer in control that's that. If that was a PL match definitely would be a red card, can't see how a friendly is any different.

Doesn't excuse Valencias reaction though. Grabbing by throat isn't acceptable in any way, shape or form. Sterling did well not to react to it

Ah here, sterling slid in with one foot and caught the player with his trailing leg, yellow card all day long in the league as we have seen numerous times. Football really is turning into a pansy sport these days.

Nothing got to do with contact the intent was there, if he had of connected he would have broken his leg. Can't believe your defending it.

I'm defending it cause he DIDN'T connect! And he didn't particularly blind-side him, Valencia hurdled the tackle, so there is no intention to break him, and no ACTUAL harm...

It didn't hurt him because he hurdled it.

And you are missing the point. He could have performed a text book sliding tackle, worthy of some of the greatest defenders of all time........and Valencia's reaction would still have been understandable.

Win the ball or not, take the man or not, players a week before the world cup shouldn't be flying into challenges like that. Most of the players who play in these games are professionals and have an understanding.

If Ecuador had been playing some minnow I could understand that tackle from some nobody looking to make a name for himself or a story to tell his kids. But it wasn't. Sterling is an England international who plays in the premier league just like Valencia.

And mike, what are those pictures designed to illustrate? Some accompanying comment would be nice. If somebody went into a tackle like that on me a week before a world cup I wouldn't be grabbing him....in be decking him.

You'd probably get a 4 game ban for that and miss the WC! :D

Very different to Hendo's, IMO. Hendo was out of control and came in high. No question that was red.

Anyway, wasted enough time arguing this one, just my opinion...

Problem there is the rulebook states there doesn't have to be harm, the tackle can be won and not technically be a foul....and still get a red card for being reckless. Once you get to that stage its interpretation...

In my book it was a red...doesn't do Sterling any harm for the WC and he'll learn from it

That Valencia didn't grab at Sterling and then realise his stupidity, Sterling turned away and the Utd player continued to hold him around his throat. Thuggish behaviour.

You are missing the point. It's not IN the league. It's a warm up game. The issue is not whether it was a yellow or red card or even a foul at all. Its that's it could easily injure a fellow professional in a meaningless game.

As I've said already, I get why Sterling went in like that. He's trying to impress. He wants to start. He's treating it as a real game. Understandable. But the rest of them aren't.

They are just looking after themselves and if you take your blinkers off for a minute you would understand Valencias reaction. Not excuse it, not give him carte blanche to do what he wants......but understand it.

    How do you know that?

Your either on the rise or in denial. Take the 'pool goggles' off. I will leave it at that.

To note: I'm not excusing Valencia's reaction shouldn't have grabbed him by the throat but 1 week before WC for that kind of **** tackle in a friendly is still BS.

England received a whole bunch like that in the Ecuador game but not one player reacted like Valencia did

You are defending it, your just ignoring the intent. And in fact he did connect have a look at it again. LOL just because Valencia hurdled it doesn't mean **** if he hadn't of jumped it would have been even worse. Your deluded.

So your defence is pulling from the random bag, who's defending Valencia??

The tackle was awful and there's a few on here saying it didn't deserve red. It's gas.

Those comments are good news, it means that he should be unveiled as a Liverpool player in the next few days.
Love it when a player categorically denies that he has any interest in joining us

    Welcome abroad Moreno!

So you think he intended to break him?
Even though he's trying to make a good impression to his manager, and he has a very good disciplinary record?

Well your (sic) a smarter man than me so...by any chance, are you a United fan??

Sterling did not react same way Sturridge did not react when Izaguirre booted the ball at him from 2 yards.

Both showed some good composure not to react.

Utd fans coming in here slating pool fans for their bias in the sterling vs valencia debate is gas. Would they even care less if valencia wasnt a a united player.

Valencia has put plenty of those kinds of challenges in in his time and he didnt like being on the receiving end. It was a dangerous lunge of a tackle and understand the red for the "intent" but plenty of the time youd see a yellow there too for sterlings tackle. Valencia would want to man up in fairness, complete over the top reaction.

It was a poor challenge by Sterling, he did get the ball but his foot was high and studs showing. Depending on the ref involved, yellow or red could have been given.

Valencias reaction was terrible. I imagine there was more than a bit of Liverpool v United coursing through their veins at that moment in time though.

Sterling handled it well though, i thought.
