Absolutely - similar 5 series touring albeit a year older was on the bangernomics thread for around 300 quid* more with test not so long ago.

Yes it was a private sale - but if the dealer selling this one won't put an NCT on it - then it defeats any possible advantage of buying this from a dealer.

The way to think of it - is that the test is what - 50 euro, 55 euro. - if the cars all good - its a small price for the dealer to pay to potentially speed up the sale.

Its not just other 5 series tourings that are on the market this dealers car has to compete with - but someone potentially in the market for an estate of this size - and price - could also consider E class or Saab 9 5 estates.

So a buyer could prefer the BMW as a car - but opt for a 9 5 automatic estate with a fresh test over this particular car.

The way forward is forget this touring - find another 5 series with test - the only good thing about that ad is that at least the dealer is been upfront about the fact that he is a dealer (not pretending he's a private seller).

The fact he wants to sell it as trade - means that imo - that 5 series is overpriced - E39s pop up at similar money with test - so why even look at one without test.

Btw - a quick look on Done Deal suggests E39s WITH test are out there this week if one doesn't mind them been saloons, SEs, 520is, 530ds (the 530d btw is 4/500 euro less then the touring above) and without leather.

There is a potentially promising one in Kerry which looks nice - but its a 520i - unfortunately no test - BUT the seller says it will get one (a test) which suggests they have the confidence in the car that it will pass.

Unlike the dealer above.

In reality thought - the best option is to be patient and wait for a 525i touring - or even a saloon to pop up - one may even find that waiting may yield you an M sport which I gather is Foxhole Normans preferred spec anyway

Lads what do you all think of this quote.
I found a pretty nice S80 D5 for sale and thought I'd give my current insurer (AXA) a try.
Popped in the details and it's coming up at 1k fully comp 2 years NCB and my wife as a named driver.
So it's about 300e more than the S40.
I checked a few other places and the cheapest I could get was Kennco at just under 800e fully comp with NCB etc.
The Kennco offer practically nothing compared to Axa where I have windscreen cover, breakdown cover whereas Kennco don't.
Do you guys think the 1k is reasonable?

You could look at it like this - your paying 300 euro more insurance wise for a bigger car with a 2.4 litre engine (I suspect that an insurer in Ireland sees 2.4 litre and think they are dealing with a rocket car).

What id do is to run a quote for something like a BMW 525d or an equivalent engine Merc E class - and see what comes back.

Would give you more of a feel for the market - imo

Sound advice.
As an experiment I'll find now a BMW with the same year and engine size and see what comes back.
Oh and fyi FBD refused to insure me :rolleyes:

Right so I ran a 2005 530d through Axa with the exact same criteria and it's 30e more to insure that fully comp than a 2.4 Volvo.

4.4 litre 5 series been very rare - hence reducing its risk profile in the insurers eyes - is the only reason I can think off.

1.4 litre Astra is much more common.

I wonder does the insurer figure that someone running a 4.4 litre car these days is likely to be an enthusiast who minds their car - and factor this in as a factor????

I wouldn't have thought theyd care about enthusiast owners either - but the whole thing is mad that you can insure the 4.4 litre for only 127 more then a 1.4 Astra.

Even allowing for the rarity of the car potentially not flagging the 4.4 litre 540i as a problem risk - youd still feel that a 4.4 litre in this country would be seen as a rocket.

Id say the 6 years no claims definitely helps though - and may well be the real reason for the smaller loading

For a laugh I put in a new bog spec a4 1.9tdi.
Loads the policy by 300??

I'd say the reason for that is because the new Audi will be worth much more than a 6/7 year old BMW.

Could be worse - imagine if it was the new Audi that was a 127 euro loading - and the 4.4 litre that had a 300 euro loading.

Sounds like a good way to have the loadings - now of only we could persuade the person who created those loadings to be the guy that sets the road tax rates. lol

I think I could even live with the tax rates but only if you could pay it monthly as they are about to introduce in the UK.
It may work out a tiny bit more expensive but I think a lot of people will find it easier to pay 100e or so a month to have a bigger engined car than take a huge hit all at once.
