That Octavia is certainly a better option than a 407, seems to be decently specced too, i think i see moocow's

They are decent yokes - that 1.9 engine seems to go on forever with around 50 mpg from what I have researched. Share the engine with Seat, VW and Audi. Wouldn't be a bad option, although they are all over the place!

They're a nice place to be, comfy like, but i think they're the blandest yokes going, a friend of mine has one in that champagne colour they came in, great boot space, and he claims to get 55+mpg but still, they scream I'm bland as fcuk to me, but each to their own and all

The Rav4 I had stood out a bit. So I don't mind bland for a change. If everyone has one, that's probably a good sign? (although I'd need to test drive it. I still wake up screaming, thinking of that Fabia! mad.png

The moocows? I'm not sure what's a reference to? :P

I do note a lack of Aircon though.. hmm... Apparently there's an 'elegance' model, that does have Air Con, but within my current budget, theres none to be found.

(I could rack up a few Euro more to spend if i had the time to wait, but unfortunately time is against me).

Seems to be getting much more favourable opinions than the 407 had gotten though! :)

I hate pestering ye guys so much, but what do ye guys make of this (im broadening out my search from the 407).

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/skoda-octavia-1-9-diesel-nct-09-14/7175979

Looks okay. I drove a Skoda Fabia before, not sure what year/spec, but it was the single worst car interior I'd ever seen. Looked like it was some mad soviet russian design and made with the cheapest of cheap plastic everywhere.

And that Octavia seems cheap, so I'm assuming it'd be the same?

Otherwise, can anyone comment on the reliability of the 1.9 diesel and rough MPG a person could expect?

Have a look at the Skoda Superb.

IMO, they're a nicer looking car and have a nicer interior.

You'll easily find loads of info on them on here, but they're very reliable cars for the most part.

George Dalton on here would be the man to ask about these.

Any Superbs in my budget are probably not great.

As an aside, ye guys know im looking at the 407 and now kind of interested in the Octavia.. if anyone has any suggestions of other cars, let me know :)

I'm looking for something that's primarily reliable, a diesel and cheap to run. (want to save my pennies for a tastier motor next year, when i sell this one on). My budget is about €3.5k.

EDIT: Ahh.. 175k miles.. bit high?

That's good value for what it is. Always liked those S40's. Have fun getting to Belmullet :pac:

Why block the reg in the pics and then just put it in underneath

Have a look at the Toyota Avensis diesel then.

As suggested last night too by someone else I think a Corolla hatchback would suit your needs. One like Toyotafanboi posted this evening in the pic thread. 2003-2004 model.

I'd join you in thinking they're a lovely car. Aesthetically, anyway. Not sure if they're a problem car or madly expensive to run or such?

S40 would be great to own. I certainly wouldn't say no to that!

To be honest, it probably would suit my needs, but I'm just not a fan of it, appearance wise. I know, for someone with a limited budget and such I'm probably being a little picky, but you know the way some things just don't really 'grab' you at all?

EDIT: I wouldn't be against an Avensis, either. Presumably they're cheap and cheerful and bullet proof? (which is why they're always taxis?)

Indeed. Mazda 3 perhaps? A nice looking car IMO.

You could buy a relatively new Opel Vectra with your budget too, if you want something Octavia-sized.

Is 175k miles a sign that I'd be the last owner? What's an S40 likely to do before it starts falling apart?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,880 ✭✭✭Kaiser D

TBH if you plan on selling it on in a year 175k is a bit much and it'll definitely turn some people off.

That's what?... just under 20k miles a year, which is nothing to a diesel. Don't know a lot else about the engines in them cars. Granted 175 seems high, and would put a lot off, but if they are a good unit, they should have lots left in them.

I drove that style S40 / V50 before and didn't like them. too small on the inside.

basically a ford focus chassis and the engines are Peugeot / ford too.

I like that, but I fear that the wing mirror could cause issues if the indicator is damaged? Also the unpainted plastic around the bottom of the car doesnt look great with the blue on the car itself.

    It's a good contender though!

120km (presumably they mean miles, not km, though), bit pricy all things considered (vs the others on show), and the wheels (could be just me) look a bit grubby or something?

Surely anything relating to Ford is a good thing, though? They seem reliable enough? (and cheap enough to fix when there are issues?)

No, just usually one other passenger in my car with me.

KKV, if you ever consider a coupe have a look at the Citoren C4.

I had a C4 Loeb many years ago, with WRC decals (I know, I know :o)

Bargains to be had with them, especially the petrol ones

To a degree, it does. I do a lot of pleasure driving so I'd like something comfortable. I got used to the leather seats in the Rav, so the S40 appeals massively on those grounds (hard to find one without a leather interior).

However, the running costs of the Rav weren't as endearing. It didn't exactly swallow petrol, but it certainly wasn't cheap to run, either.

So, I love SUVs/Jeeps, and I like the high seated position, but I want a change in the meantime before i go back to an SUV/Jeep.

But I want that change in the meantine to be as cheap and reliable as I can get it (while still maintaining some level of comfort).

So I want something with decent MPG (and I want a Diesel, just for the sake of it, if for nothing else). I cover a lot of miles, so I want to see if I can, first-hand, see any real difference in cost of running a car.

(this is where the 407 came into my head - friend had one before and i thought it was comfy, looked sportyish (in black), and seen that it came in a 1.6 diesel, so it seemed ideal, but further reading and assistance on here suggests that im just buying a problem car, which I don't want).

I'm not up to much tomorrow so will see if I can stick my head out to that Octavia in Dundalk as it's pretty much next door to me, but the S40 aesthetically has won me over.

However, as above, I'd be happy with something with better MPG, so that's a definitive influence in my decision.

I do photography, so i need something that looks somewhat presentable when I pull up outside a house/church etc, too though :o

But now it's after going past the stage where I'm enjoying looking for a new car and it's starting to feel like a chore, almost. If it wasn't for this thread and the fantastic users here (ye guys really are great!) I'd probably have hung myself by now.

Ordered my 4x 225/45/R17 94Y Uniroyal Rainsport 3's from Camskill anyway

    €335.64 delivered.

Most local places were charging 100-135 for pure muck in that size with the wrong load and speed ratings so im happy out as i get the tyre i want and fitting alignment and balancing with only be €80 or so.
