    Well. That was fun.

Had a quick test-drive in an RX-8 today. Rushed up to 50 in second and I didn't think it was all that hot until I realised it was 50mph, not kph.... oops. And that was in second gear. It felt really great when driving, even for a few minutes.

It's a bit of a scruffy car, but at nearly 10 years old it's to be expected to a point. Bit dirty. Bit scratched. But there was a tub of oil in the boot, so the previous owner wasn't a muppet, but was aware of what the car needed.

Downside is, it's got *that* hot-start issue ( which I discovered after stalling the poor thing - bit different to a diesel, hah). The dealer admitted it might be a blown seal, but he's telling me his mechanic thinks it's the starter. I'm not so sure, given how it behaved when I tried to start it. I'm waiting on a phone call during the week to see what they're doing to it.

Whatever it is, they've promised to fix it before selling it off. If it's not a full rebuild it needs, I'd be very suspicious. There was a bit of a vibration up through the gear lever, and an odd noise when I had the clutch pushed fully in, with a very short travel on it.

But, **** me am I never more certain that I want one of these. I nearly ****ing bought it anyway.

This dealer's lucky... he's dealing with an utter moron ;P

Vibration in the gear stick could be a gearbox mount that needs to be replaced.

A new starter is only €600 from Mazda so it's not too bad and I'd nearly bet that's the problem.

Where was this car? Any link to an ad?

I've been reading up on the injector issue I'm having and it turns out it might be the coils instead. I'm bloody hoping it is because I can replace them individually whereas the injectors all have to be replaced if I replace 1 and the coils are much cheaper!

Gonna run the car and disconnect the coils tomorrow so fingers crossed!

I'd strongly recomend a 6 point socket for these. The normal 12 points will round the plastic and leave you up **** creek!

The car feels like it's on rails with the new rubber, and everything is so smooth. That kicked in the chest feeling of the change from 1st to 2nd with the boot down is unreal. Very impressed with the Matadors after a few miles. Far too early to really know, but looking good.

What Matadors are they? I've never really heard of them but from a quick google they get good reviews…. I'm 90% sure that's whats on my sisters Punto and they are muck beyond muck :o

I would be interested to hear how you get on with them :) I'll be looking for tyres in a while and would consider them as they're cheap but don't know if they're good yet!!!

I think the vibration's related to the clutch. It makes something of a distinctive noise when you push it full in, at a standstill. It's not there when it's actually driving. I didn't notice it anyway.

The real problem is, I don't have the 2.5k needed for an engine rebuild if it isn't. And I really suspect it might not be because it's not turning over that slowly, it feels more like the engine's slow to pick up after being cranked. That's the kicker - it could be either and won't know until it's checked.

It seems fine when running... nothing else felt out of place but maybe I've just got the rosey glasses on.

That's it. Decent enough people there. I talked to them on the phone and they were honest enough about the car, they didn't try to hide the issues with it, or give a 'they all do that' excuse.

When I initially rang about the car, it was literally the first thing they said to me when I asked. They told me it just started doing it after being dropped off.

I know Jason O Brien Car Sales is terrible but this has caught my eye:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-5-series-525i-auto-tax-and-nct/6886823

I take it they should have their own insurance for test drives or do I need it? Tempted to take a spin down there just to give it a good rip.

I remember there being something posted here a few months ago about that car... *ahem*

Have a link to it? I'm purely interested in just seeing what an Auto 525i is like to be honest, no real inclination to buy it or buy from them.

Buy a brown envelope and fill it with folded paper and keep patting it and giving the salesman a knowing smile so he knows you are the real deal :p
