ACDC, end of an era

Looks like ACDC could be no more. Never got to see them.. although I wasn't dying about most of the stuff they did from 1986 on. I had all their early albums when I was a young fella. A cousin in New York sent us Back in Black just after it was released in 1980 and we played it non stop for weeks..

I saw them in Punchestown a few years back.

    Best. Gig. Ever.

And, OP - you forgot the "/". FFS :D

They should have called it quits years ago. I liked them for a while in my teens but now I just think they're a bit boring.

Just been watching a few clips of a DVD from Brazil from a few years back. I've never seen such an atmosphere at a gig, ever. Sad news, if the rumours are true.

Back in Black is one of my favourite Albums ever, and when I say album, I mean I had it back when there was no cd, just vinyl.
    Great rock band.

90% of their best stuff was from the Bon Scott era anyway, they've been coasting for a looooooooooooooooooooong time.

Couldn't see them when they played last cause of me fecking leaving cert. I'd be devastated if this is true. Hopefully they can do one last tour. Back in black is my favorite rock album ever. Although I preferred their sound during the Bon Scott era, with the exception of back in black. Kinda hit and miss ever since then.

Their output has been a bit patchy since 'For Those About To Rock', and that came out a long time ago. Cracking live band though.

Their era ended many years ago. Anyone who says otherwise is seriously in denial.

Sad times. I loved them when I was a kid.

No doubt that their still a class live band. Rock and roll train was a great song when it was out a few years ago . Actually black ice was their best album in years.

ACDC are or were a brilliant band with fantastic songs and an amazing live presence, but there comes a point, or should come a point where a band says no more. If they don't then they risk, actually it's usually a given, ending up as a cabaret band, a museum exhibit, even if it's still profitable a walking nostalgia parody of themselves. To paraphrase Johnson "An old band whose days are in the past is like watching a dog walking on its hind legs. It is not done well, but you are surprised to find it done at all."

What I always liked about The Beatles is they gave up pretty much at the right time. They may have gone on at a peak for maybe a year afterward and Imagine could have been a Beatles track, but can you imagine if they'd gone the Rolling Stones route and the Frog Song was on a Beatles album? Fuq that shít.

With a few notable and well deserved exceptions* rock and roll is nearly always a young mans** game. Young men(and women) full of spit and dreams and testosterone and anger make the best original rock and roll music. One could even argue that point across some other genres of music too.

*i'd argue our own U2, though middle aged for quite a while fought against the dying of the light and stayed relevant more than most. Springsteen isn't far behind them. The old Black Blues guys kept it going into old age.

**women can seem to keep it going for a little longer. Maybe because the testosterone isn't in play?

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

It'd be sad if it were to happen like this, I hope Malcolm gets well soon regardless, if this is what has to be done for his health then so be it. A great shame though, would love to see them again.

"Gone Shootin'", "Touch Too Much", among many others will always be up there among the best Rock tracks to me, although they did become quite a boring band output wise after Back In Black was released.

First seen them in the RDS on October 22nd 1982 and a number of times since.. I've always been a huge fan.

Was never mad about them actually. Gonna be the contrary one here but imo, few classic songs aside a lot of their songs sound the same. Kinda find them boring tbh.

Seem like a great live show mind you

Seen them a good few times.

I actually won an all expenses paid trip to Donnington back in 2010 to see em (with backstage passes) courtesy of 2fm (the same day Gerry Ryan died)

Kinda made up for missing them on 28th June 09 in Punchestown (i was married a few days earlier) made do with listening to them on my decking with a few cans (i am only a mile as crow flies from Punchestown)

I read not so long ago they were planning another album and tour though.

Brian is an excellent replacement, but Bon Scott was an unreal front man.

It's a long way to the top!

Well, the rumour is that they have studio time booked in Vancouver in May to record their next album. So I doubt we'v seen the last of them yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,506 ✭✭✭✭Xenji

They had some great songs, but they also churned out alot of generic rock and recycled riffs, saw them live in London years back and its hard to fault them live, so much energy.

Apparently they've released a statement saying the rumour of a break up is false.

Never the biggest fan of them, but it does occur to me when they and the rest of the big rock bands eventually retire that there really is no one to replace them.

Leonard Cohen, Roy Orbison, Tom Waits....the list goes on, and doesn't include U2- not by a long shot.

the bon scott era seemed to have a charisma that they lost when he died. Stil never failed to deliver live

getting old -getting grey - getting ripped off - underpaid..one of my favourite lines

They're all solo artists..and to be honest they all had fallow periods

with very few exceptions, the best rock bands have four or maybe five albums in them before they are completely played out and should call it a day

Don't worry, we'll still have the likes of Nickelback & Limp Bizkit to keep the flame alive. :pac:

On AC/DC if they do end it'll be sad to see them go but honestly their best days are long behind them. Black Ice was a decent enough album but nothing particularly new or interesting about it when you compare it to their stuff from the 70s & 80s.

Springsteen "old blues guys" and testosterone were all mentioned in the one breath, so examples are legitimate.

I used to love them back when I was in my early teens. When they played here five or six years ago I was mad excited to finally see them, but it was definitely the most disappointing gig I've ever been to. I didn't enjoy it at all, I just thought they were ****e. Everyone else seemed to have enjoyed the gig so I don't know. Maybe I just turned into a grumpy old man :pac:

If any fans have withdrawal symptoms, just head to the Flanders bar in Bruxelles.

AC/DC is about all they bloody play there....along with a silent video of some Metallica gig, that's been on loop for the last 15 years!

Have they made any statements regarding those who were about to rock?

    Here's another snippet: http://www.news.com.au/national/breaking-news/gable-says-acdcs-malcolm-young-very-sick/story-e6frfku9-1226886123580

I saw Ross the other day (in Sydney) & thought at the time how unusual it was to see him at this time of the year. He lives with Malcolm in England for most of the year, only returning to Sydney for 6-8 weeks over Christmas, so I'd say it's pretty definite Malcolm is indeed in Australia.

I went to see them in the UK during the last tour. Enjoyed it a lot except for when Angus stripped down to his skivvies on stage for his solo. An aul fella with jiggly sweaty old skin isn't a sight anyone needs to see.

Despite that I don't think they've gotten to the point where they're embarrassing themselves. When a bunch of old fellas can go on stage and give it large then they have my respect.

Great band, classic tunes, long guitar solo's bore me to death though. Band always seemed to have an endless supply of energy live, unlike the young upstarts.

and the thing about it is that most lead guitar players imagine that the whole world is captivated by what they are doing.

which means that disbanding... biding a bit of time.... and then major "last ever tour" comeback in a couple of years is the way to go !

    Scott was a singer, Johnson's a screamer...
