    Hi all,

Just a question on obviously enough .17 ammo. I have attached a pic of two hornady 17 grain v-max. Both from same batch but one is oddly faded. Any opinions on cause

    Thanks

What colour are the rest of the batch?

All the Hornady i tried were that bright red. The darker, left, one looks similar to either Federal or CCI.

What does the base/head of the shell say/marked as. Are they the same?

There both from the same hornady box both with the H on the base. The rest of the box are similar, some bright red some nearly black some in between

Could be a fault in the manufacturing process. A problem with the die used in the tips. As long as they are all marked the same and chamber okay then work away.

Must go get shots on paper and check accuracy in case.

Had the same as that in a box I got. Seems to rub off though as if it's moly coated

I came across a box of differing colors in Hornady as well didn'tnotice any difference in them except colour. But have since stuck with Ferdal

In other threads on the HMR some lads were getting split casings on hornadys I wonder we're the cases split before they were fired and not noticed till afterwards. I know all HMR rounds are made by CCI on the same machines

I've seen that colour difference on the .220 50gr Vmax hornady also. If you give the grey tip a rub on your clothes it comes up red. Maybe it's a residue or coating from production? No difference in firing or accuracy between the two with the swift.

Winchesters were the worst i saw for split cases,, That and missfires,,
about 1 in 5 of them wouldnt fire first time from the two boxes i tried,

One case split so badly that it got stuck in the chamber and i had to remove the bolt and use a small screwdriver to pull it out,, :(

I have used federal, hornady and remmington without any problems or obviously split cases and with zero misfires in approx 300 rounds.

I just noticed myself that it rubs off easily. must be a coating of sorts as ye said.

The split casing pic is interesting. Iv had a few splits ones from federal but don't no was it split before fired. ill have to keep an eye out
