Get your application form from NPWS and fill it out for a deer hunting licence. They wont issue it till nearer the season but they will tell you if you have been approved(if you ring and ask).Next job would be to try get an experienced stalker to bring you out to his grounds or bring him with you to yours so he can show you some tricks and tips and talk you through your first Gralloch. You tube is a great source of info and there is some good Irish vids up by a guy called megasako from the WDAI on it.Enjoy it lad,I think its the best form of shooting and its totally addictive.Plus you will end up with some fantastic meat for your efforts

Get a signed letter from him with foilo numbers and then get the serial number of the deer legal rifel you will be using down load application from npws site fill in and send off. Put in a cover letter asking to process application quickly so as you can apply for firearm cert before season starts. When you get deer license apply for firearm cert

    The law reads:
    • .22 centrefire
    • 1,700 ft/lb att he muzzle
    • Minimum of 55 gr bullet.

If your rifle can meet these minimums then it's deer legal. As a generalisation it includes:
    • .220 Swift
    • 22-250
    • .243
    • 25-06
    • 6.5
    • .270
    • .308
    • .300
    • 30-06
Obviously there are more calibers, but as it's Ireland we'll stick to the ones that are commonly used for deer hunting.

Go look at a rifle first if you happy put deposit on it you'll need the serial numbers for the paper work you'll need the deer Hunter license with your firearm application apply for that straight away you might have it back by June you left yourself with plenty of time good luck with it liffey

Great advice there, here's some more, get out on the permission and start getting your head around how the deer are moving, times, habbits, signs, frequent trails etc. Farmers are known for exaggerating and loads of slots on the ground may indicate animals passing through or a few animals active in a small area.
What species of deer are there, remember the red lads are a bitch to extract, even medium sized Sika will give you grief on a upward gradient.
Keep an eye on the climate when it comes to hanging if you've no refrigeration. Don't worry too much if you don't have a hanging space. I tried a experiment this season and broke an animal just over 12 hrs after the kill, just after rigour and saw no discernible difference in the eating qualities (if its good enough for the white tail hunters its good enough for us).
Best of luck and happy hunting.

Hcap is only for coillte leases.

Do you have a rifle that you will be using.

Well lads the update is, for some unknown reason the farmer who promised me the deer stalking permission wont return my phone calls or txts... so that has put my planning right back to the very beginning :( so it looks like its's the bunnies and foxes for me for the next while :(
Maybe sometimes ya dont get that lucky that easy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭German pointer

Why don't you chance a few doors in the area anyway and ask the famers you'll get one of two answers and one is bound to say yes.

Jut read the thread. I wonder if he wanted 'em shot straight away more so than waiting for the season to open? Heard from a few lads that shoot foxes that they've been asked to shoot deer with "no questions asked" etc

that's a pity , if it was me it would just make me more determent to get started, there`s always other farmers, but why not knock into him ? at lease u`ll get a reason why the change of hart , might even change his mind again when your face to face with him ,
