Possibly still a knock on effect from Hornady's restricted production lines.

Last February Hornady announced they would be cutting a serious amount of their regular lines. Then of the lines that were being maintained the US market would get first crack, then the rest of the world. Ireland is less than a speck in terms of ammo sales so we get what's left.

Some dealers managed to source ammo not available through regular channels, but if Hornady did/does not start production again then that supply line will run out too.

Attached is the list they issued.

Hi Cassiday, are the Hornady 55gm ballistic tip round any better in real world terms than the same in Remington ? (which I was told use the Hornady manufactured projectile)

    Is that at me?

If so i have no idea. Never used Remington in 55gr. I like the Accu tip ammo from Remmie. Have used it in other calibers, and get decent to good results. But never in .223. Not that i remember anyway.

    No bother.

As said i've used Accu tip previously in other calibers, just not .223 so no point in speculating. However if i were to speculate, just a little, based on performance in the other calibers i cannot see it being "bad". It's also slightly cheaper than Hornady and possibly more available. No harm to try a box.

It's the same reason i switched to Federal 95 gr Nosler BT in .243. I was using Hornady 58 gr V-Max. Terific bullet and absolutely no drop from 100 to 200 yards in the RPA. Problem was i ran out of local dealers to get it from. No one had it and it was silly to have to ration my ammo based on availability. I tried the 95 gr and while there is a drop of 1" between 100 and 200 yards they were more consistent than the 59gr and way more available.

I didn't save anything as the Federal Nosler BT were as expensive as the Hornady, but i can get them whenever i want. It's no harm to have a "fall back" round.

I'd use Federal quicker than any hornady thats my view.

Hornady are a good and well established/proven round, however in most cases i believe people use them simply because of their reputation.

Of all the Hornady ammo i've tried in all the calibers i've owned and currently own only one or two were good enough to consider using on a permanent basis. Federal for me has proven itself as good if not better than Hornady in more cases than not.
    • In 6.5x55 they are cheaper, more available and excellent.
    • In the .17hmr they are more consistent, and the same price.
    • In .308 the Federal are nearly €13 a box cheaper as every bit as good. Not to mention the Superformance is highly overrated imo.
    • In.243 the federal is the same price, but more consistent, better performing, and readily available.
    • In .223 i found AE as good as Hornady but at less than 50% the cost.
    • In 30-06 the Federal Fusion were a fantastic round and again cheaper than Hornady.

These were all shot used in such rifles as:
    • Sauer
    • Sako
    • RPA
    • Remington
    • Savage
    • CZ
    • Anschutz

It's why i prefer Federal over Hornady and most other makes. Have done for years.

Depends if the Feds are using Sierras!

Federal is using a variety of bullet makers, including I think their own proprietary type in the Power-shok (which I think is fairly conventional with a thinner jacket near the nose). I use Sierra, Hornady and Nosler bullets in reloading all of which are excellent.

True to a certain extent. The polymer tipped federals and HP rounds are very consistent. My brother got two bad batchs of Hodnady superformance for his 270,not one of the rounds would chamber until he got a new batch. Brass seemed a little long at the neck. Id 58 grain superformance for 243 and one of the bullets was lob sided, I couldn't understand why it wouldn't chamber until I discovered the bullet was off to one side. They must have poor quality control. Id only rate hornady being average
