My insurance is up in a month or so and I went onto a few sites to check prices..

Chill seem to have the most expensive out of anyone else I checked.

I'm 31 and been driving near 10 years.

Chill's cheapest was still €200 more then the best i've found.

Do people actually use chill.ie ?

Same here. I've never got a good quote from them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,210 ✭✭✭maximoose

I give it a try every year, but as above - consistently one of the worst offers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,196 ✭✭✭✭jimgoose

They're head-cases. Cheapest they threw me was about €250 more than I paid last year, only without windscreen and personal accident! :pac:

Same here have done an online quote and even rang them and they where still a lot more expensive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,237 ✭✭✭✭djimi

Online quotes in general are pretty hopeless. I think the last time I used Chill (it was about 4 years ago so it might have been one of the other comparison sites) the cheapest quote came back from Zurich, who bettered the price by quite a bit when I went to them direct over the phone!

Try AIG went with them this year they didn't charge me extra for changing the car this year

Same here. I got a quote if fully comp with NCB protection and windscreen cover from Allianz for €444. Chill.ie wanted €810 for the same cover. A rep from chill rang me after my online quotation and i told him they were the most expensive out of every single online company and I will never bother even looking for a quote from them in future. He acted line he heard that line on a regular basis. I'm 40+ with 23 years accident free driving and no penalty points driving a 2.0 petrol legacy that wouldn't pull you out of bed.

I got a great quote from Chill 2 renewals ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,924 ✭✭✭RayCon

They quoted me better than my initial renewal (€372 V's €399) ... I then phoned my Insurer with Chill's quote and got my renewal down to €349 ... so they were useful for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,694 ✭✭✭BMJD

I went with them last year for my insurance, 123.ie (who I had been with for the previous 4 years) went through the roof so I shopped around. I think AXA were about €20 cheaper but with far less benefits and higher excess. I got one of the quick quotes online and they phoned me back to talk to me about it so I did it all over the phone with them and I was happy with the service. I have made a windscreen claim so far, touch wood, all it took was one phone call and they did the rest.

I was filling out an online application to get something to use in my annual €100-off-for-querying-your-quote ritual, and immediately after I filled in my mobile, it rang. Before I even submitted the application!

It was a guy from Chill ringing to try to get me to talk. I'd say they see a lot of online queries that don't lead to much business.

I bet every time they see 087 0000000 looking for a quote on a GTR they cry a little inside

Get quotes from chill every year as well as a few other brokers. Always way more than quotes from companies directly.

Yet many will always get better quotes from a broker than going to firms directly and these people would often have a similar driving history to me. 31, full licence, 5 yrs NCB, similar and in one case same car as me:)

    Insurance is such an enigma:confused:

The best they could do last year was 300 more than other quotes I'd received. I found them to be quite pushy also.
They call right away after entering the online quote.

    This.

I wouldn't rule out any company permanently, they are all so inconsistent.

I just got insurance last week, into my 5th year of driving now. For the first 4 years AXA were absolutely taking the piss with my quotes, generally being at least €600 dearer than the company I ended up going with (€1-2k dearer the first couple of years). Yet this year they were comfortably the cheapest by some margin.

Who is supposed to be the best for a 30 year old male looking to get their first car and insurance ever? 1.0L Micra probably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,868 ✭✭✭djflawless

Literally only off the phone to them
4thelads quoted me 2,200 on 1.1 pajero junior
    Same details to chill.ie, 1100

    I can't fault that

They also throw €50 admin fee on to whatever the insurer's quote comes in at. I talked my mam into going directly to her insurer last year (she'd had a claim and didn't want the hassle of moving) and she saved a decent chunk.

It wouldn't occur to me to go to them for a quote with that admin fee.

If you scroll down to the bottom you can see it's Brittons Insurance.

Best is to ring around. Find as many insurance companies and brokers as you can and call them. Take note of the quotes as you go. I'd be inclined to go third party fire & theft only if the car is older and worth under a few grand.

I got my insurance through AA the last 2 years and found them quite good. The first time it was underwritten by Zurich and last year it was Axa. I've seen good quotes from FBD also. There was less than 50 in the difference last year between FBD & AA for me, so I stayed where I was.

I was 27 when I got my first insurance. My sister worked in underwriting in Zurich at the time and recommended Sheridan insurance. They beat anyone else I tried by a fair bit so try give them a ring. You'll find that you get better quotes over the phone after you have online quotes to use as a baseline.

Tried Chill today as the renewals in a month. 400 quid plus for TP! About 150 more than the 123 quote. No thanks!

Very expensive feckers keep emailing me even though I never had a policy with them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,359 ✭✭✭Fiona

    I tried them last week.

I was quoted €900+ to insure my 96 Toyota Corolla.

I subsequently went with AA for €323 3rd party with windscreen cover and also managed to get my classic cover for another car for €280 for the year.

I really enjoyed telling Chill that when they called me to 'discuss my quote'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,360 ✭✭✭NeVeR

I emailed them telling them they where over 200 more then the lowest I got.. no answer.

I think they are praying on people that don't know how to use a computer/internet.

My daughter is 20, just got her first insurance from Liberty through chill for 200 less than Liberty directly. €1200 for 1st insurance fully comp...very happy

Wifey called them last week, they offered fully comp for both of us, 06 1.6 focus, for €299 with a crowd called ARB Insurance....she agreed to it there and then. Decent quote, previously with AXA at €380. Called our previous broker, they matched it so cancelled with Chill.ie. Wifey was annoyed she agreed there and then, typical sales spiel about only being a good offer right now. Bit of hassle to cancel it, they never mentioned the non-refundable admin charge of €26 either. When we looked at the documents they sent out to us they had both if our names incorrect, had both of us down as having our licenses 14 years (more like 5 and 3) plus had our NCB wrong too.....wouldn't deal with them again. Glad we cancelled.

Yeah, I only ever use these guys as something to beat my regular insurer down. Not that it's hard, they have a whole call centre manned by people who's only job is to knock money off the quote you just got in the post if you ring up and argue with it.

Obviously, so many people just renew that it pays them to employ all these jobsworths to answer the phone and say "Have a hundred euros off!".

Of course, after a couple of years, the customers get cynical, and I suppose it is really dull. "Gimme €100 off my quote!" "OK" [clank] "Gimme €100 off my quote!" "OK" [crash] etc.

I recently got a good quote from Chill.

I was told I had a cooling off period of 14 days. I never signed anything or submitting any paperwork and they have now taken the full amount plus an administration fee of just under a E100. Which they never told me about!!!

They have agreed to back out the policy but it is proving to be a long drawn out process plus they are presently refusing to return the administration fee.

Trust me...Save yourselves the hassle and stay with your current provider.

    An appalling experience over all.

You got a quote and they came round your house and rooted through bins for financial details? Shocking stuff.

Or you paid online and ticked the various "I agree and understand the terms and conditions boxes"?

I have used them for house, best by far. Ever crossed yer mind that you are considered not worth it, let the others take the risk? Insurance is a "balance the books" business.

I have noticed since a while that the number of brokers has dropped.
