Hi all I'm doing a fetec level 5 health care course and I have to do a essay on discrimination on a minority group and what impact they have on Irish society has any one got any ideas on any groups I could use. I was thinking about ageism or discrimination of the elder person but I can't find much information on the internet.

    Thanks lisa

    Hi.

You wouldn't necessarily have to do it about the elderly.

Other minority groups would be the likes of Travelers, Muslims, Homosexuals, people who mentally disable ,etc .

Hi ailish your right there has been a few good suggestions on topics to cover I'm finding references facts quite hard to get to grips with how are you getting on with that? Or has anyone got any ideas on an easier way of referencing?

Legally recognised ways in which you can be discriminated against:
    Gender
    Civil status
    Family status
    Sexual orientation
    Religion
Age (does not apply to a person under 16)
    Disability
    Race
    Membership of the Traveller community.

Got some good info on the internet in relation to ageism in the workplace. There have been a couple of court cases on it too. It's how to put it all together is the problem for me.

For my project in social studies I am going to research and explain my understanding of how society views teenage pregnancy . I hope to learn from doing this research and I hope to deliver a clear and precise description on how teenage pregnancy is discriminated against.

    Any ideas guys please share!!!!

hi lisa my presentation is on challenging behaviour. I found it hard just getting onto this site, any ideas for me?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14 Lishort

Hi Ita I think when you have done your research lie it all out then start to put them in a beginning middle and end pile then make some bullet points and put each pile with the main points your trying to make hopefully then it should start to look like a essay/discussion. I'm not great at essays but I find all the above helps me .

Wow vicmac thats a very challenging topic to pick you must have some experience or knowledge of that subject. Best if luck with it I'm sure you can get lots of info from the internet on that topic.

Ciaraf that's a good social studies topic to pick as society has changed its views on how to deal with teenage pregnancy it's not such a taboo subject. I saw someone's essay on the very same subject and they included media into it by showing promiscuous celebs in scantily clad clothes which is ok if your not impressionable but they don't promote a warning saying use protection if yr sexually active. Wish I had chose that now as I think I could rant on for a while lol

Hi Donna travellers are a great subject to study, there is so much on the internet about them and you can see why the discriminators have opinions as well as finding out how the travellers themselves feel about being discriminated against, another view you might like to look at is discrimination within the actual travelling community and within there marriages.

Hi linda I think if I was doing this subject I would decide if I was going to base it on adults or children first then I would find out any centres that specialised in my chosen group and get leaflets or books from the library and defiantly use the internet. Maybe someone else on here might have some good suggestions for you.

Emjor I think your right about all the directions racism can go in but I have decided to go with a different subject as when I was researching racism I was going from colour, age, religion so I had to stop and chose ageism in the workplace as I could relate to that topic
