Jack Daniels is 24 in Tesco. Cheapest I've seen it is 23. 70cl bottle
jack daniels dipped to 20euro a few times last christmas.

I am only running out of my christmas drink now. Cans of guinnes were working out around 65cent as they were 20euro a tray and then discounts on top.

With minimum pricing a possibility I will be stockpiling vodka if I see good offers where I can use vouchers. They take up little space and do not go off and can be handy as last minute presents.

I wonder will vouchers be a workaround for minimum pricing rules?

    Good question

no, they have that covered in the law. Reading the law I think there is the possibilty of selling bundles though, its a bit of a grey area. The big shopping chains might not want to be seen to be using loopholes to circumvent the idea of the law. But I reckon smart small offies will.

e.g. people reckon that the likes of smirnoff will jack up the wholesale price, so they are above the minium price level, which is just under €21.

But there is nothing to stop independent offies legitimately importing from other countries with lower wholesale prices. So I do not think this is too big a worry

e.g. my local supervalu used to import 5% scottish market heineken and sell it cheaper than the irish market 4.3% stuff. Before stoli vodka was properly marketed here I used to get it cheaper than smirnoff in a local offie.

So a smart offie might sell only a small selection beers & spirits and offer them with bundles of other products. e.g. I still think it will be legal to buy a bottle of whiskey which comes with a free glass in a box. So I reckon they can bundle it with other products, like a tub of chocolates or box of washing powder or something. It would ideally be some expensive item everybody uses which does not take up much space.

People are totally used to buying in 24packs these days, word would get out to go to an offie, buy a tray and get your stuff thrown in. The offie might only sell in trays, or minimum 3 bottles of spirits, queues could be out the door if they got it right, and have huge turnover.

The laws can be seen here https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/bills/bill/2015/120/

I also picked up a bottle of Argus Gold 6%. It has a label added on the back saying "Microfiltered lager beer".
Just drinking it now, very nice.
If you go for the Bushmills don't leave without some.

Mix and match means pick any 2 items that are included in the offer and don’t forget to use your shop and save voucher to save another tenner and you will get another voucher to go again so it’s a win win

Just a heads up, Dunnes are doing their 2 for €50 deals on certain crates and certain 1 litre spirits from tomorrow.

Here's a picture of the advert from their latest booklet.

They coincide with payday. Thursday/Friday are traditionally when people get paid and do their weekly shop.

    It’s a good whiskey......but not a great whiskey!

The Irish Examiner have a €10 off €50 voucher for Dunnes, tomorrow Saturday 20th..Be handy for the booze deal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,938 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

It's intended as a "cheap" whiskey for hot whiskeys, cocktails etc.

In other words, it's not made to be tasted.

For the same money you're much better off getting white label Bushmills which is often on offer in Dunnes/Tesco for that price.

    Life ain't always empty.
