The Indo and their rugby obsession

This really annoyed me this morning for some reason, and I know there was other threads on media fixation with rugby but ffs, the top headline this morning on their site "o gara thinks o driscoll has great days ahead of him" ? The little fact that a plane is missing with over 200 people from 13 different countries, all probably dead obviously is not as important as someone ( who is famous for kicking an inflated piece of leather around ) retiring. It's gone beyond a joke at this stage.

Is BO'D retirement more important than a plane crash where 200+ people are killed? 29 votes

    Yes, in BOD we trust!

You've heard of Brian yeah? How many of the people on the plane do you know?

The purpose of a newspaper is to attract attention. They print what they think the most people are interested in.

Yes I've heard of him and yes I don't give a sh1te about him. You would swear he cured AIDS the way the media go on.

The cure for aids in babies was in the news earlier in the week. Do keep up.

    Great.

I'm not so much bashing rugby as bashing their priorities for news headlines. Keep the sports stuff in the sports section, then sports fans will be happy because all their news is in one convenient section. And I'll be happy because my newspaper headlines aren't littered with irrelevant crap.

personally I cant focking wait to give BOD a good send off later, with a few pre match scoops of Ken in Crowe's, followed by a one minute applause for this institution of Irish Rugbayyyy...

There's loads of stuff on the front pages of newspapers that I couldn't give a crap about. Do you know what I do? I don't read them.

It's the same here in AH - there's threads that don't interest me, so I don't open them. Some of these threads obviously interest others, so they stay on the front page.

Incidentally, you starting this thread is helping to keep the thread about the air crash off the front page of AH.

I know there will be a national Bod day next! It was embarrasing the way Irish media and fans went on when he was dropped for the lions. Gatland was proved right

That's a bit random. But they are internationals. Other countries count them and similar.

    This is ridiculous!

They're test matches against SH teams. How can they not count?

Oh wait, what was that OP?

As much as I admire them both, it's bit pathetic having that as a headline. But then again, the Indo is pathetic.

George Hook compared paul o connell to napolean as a leader of men before the england match. I never heard such bull**** in my life about any sport even in american sports.. The OP above has a point in all fairness as to the headline today. An international flight gone missing on one of the most common safest jets in the world and the headline is about well nothing really. They have a rapidly declining sports section to put that dribble in if someone chooses to want to read it.Most of us might not know anyone on the plane thank bod but I sure as hell will be thinking about it when I get on one next week.

But that's Hook for you, he spouts shíte like that all the time. He's a paid troll who shouldn't really be on tv.

Indo's (and all other newspapers) "priorities" are to sell as many papers as possible. The most effective way of advertising your paper is through your front page. Obviously they believe, correctly in my opinion, that BOD will sell more papers today than your plane crash.

    Quite simple really.

The wankfest over the game today is embarrassing, I'm sure not least to O Dr is collected himself. He is probably one of the best rugby players we produced alright, but the hype this week is way ott. We have it all to look forward to again in his final Ireland game his final leinster game in Dublin his final lenster Heineken cup game etc etc......
Too many media outlets here not just the indo are more than happy to wheel out any sh1te contained in an irfu press release, and have bought into the myth that Ireland are an important rugby nation. Bod was a brilliant player, but in a world context is somewhat behind the greats of the larger more successful

For how ever many media outlets publish stuff you don't like there are thousands more you can try for content which you find more suitable. You do have the internet?

I think this constant call for censorship should be resisted. We had it recently in another thread where people demanded that the Late Late show be taken off the air.

    You're complaining about irrelevant crap?

The Indo's frankly a sh1tty paper overall & its standards have been in decline for some considerable period. If you're finding yourself increasingly irked by it, try the IT in combination with a UK broadsheet or use the web to access myriad sources of quality copy.

By and large you are correct of course, but this week has seen in particular the national broadcaster in overdrive over this half story. When you can't turn on a radio or TV without having this line of bullsh1t being rammed down your throat it's a little sad.

Because being a British Lion is apparently the pinnacle of the great sport of rugby. For over 100 years the four countries of the United Kingdom have come together to usually lose to Australia. Last year the Lions hammered Australia and the UK rejoiced. Despite Brian not playing his influence on the British Lions will never be forgotten

If you read the Irish Times etc and listen to women and men in the pub who never watched rugby 10 years ago they'd tell you BOD is the greatest living human being to pull on a rugby shirt. Never mind just an Ireland or a British Lions shirt.

    Its the Indo!!

Not even good enough to wipe your arse with.

They always go though phases of obsessions, public sector bashing, religion bashing, rugby worship, political bashing, look people are better than us at something finger pointing.....

I just stopped reading the that paper and read online instead.

All English, Scottish and Welsh fans and some players call it the British Lions.
Our own Stephen Ferris even calls them the British Lions. Such pride being a British Lion

In match commentaries I have often heard them referred to as just "The Lions". In the same way that Albion might be used as a shorthand in a West Bromich Albion game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭laugh

People are far more interested in "Celebrities" and foreign soccer players than an Irish man who has achieved substantive success in his field (oh yea ).

^ My comment from the previous thread on this.

So all the middle class are West Brit ****? And the lower class all support English soccer teams, watch Eastenders or Corrie, shop at British chain stores and holiday in Playa de Ingles?

    ^ Neither statement is true.

People are generally needy and have to have something to fixate on. The media provide this and more and more it serves the populace with it's reporting of drivel as filler for mundane lives.

The point is that just because some people say it doesn't make it right. Doesn't matter who or what they are. Luckily most people call it the lions.
