What do you expect with these immoral cretins, didnt they sponsor Dennis Rodman to go to North Korea, they would sponsor the nazis in ww2 if they were around.
And yet the media swoon all over them, like a jack the lad club.
Makes me sick to be honest

What's worse is they are offering money back if he walks.

    Sick.

I don't get this? Money back if not guiltey means they can't make money off it surely?

Its the glibness of it all.

This is a typical Paddy Power marketing ploy, all their money back offers are. Using a murder trial as a marketing tool to gain attention is sick - whether they actually make money from bets on it or not. Basically why is there even a market on it at all?

Have you seen their 'hilarious' mock up picture of Pistorius as an acadamy award statue?

They took bets on the OJ Simpson trial many years ago.

If you're so outraged complain to them, or better yet, stop betting with them.

Surprised at Powers, worked as a manager for a major betting firm and this lad completely scuttered put on a bet after Iraq invaded Kuwait that read something like 'George Bush and Saddam Hussain to be assignated £10 on each'. I had to go through the motions of ringing head office who refused to take the bet on the grounds it was in bad taste. Power's have obviously decided to ditch that one obviously.
Will they be putting up a market for new Crimean war next I wonder?

Paddy Power seems to think that a murder trial is "fair game" Just because the trial is taking place in another Country, the terrible death of Reeva Steenkamp deserves just as much respect as a murder closer to home.
Just think of the outcry if Paddy Power had promoted bets on some of our more local hideous crimes , "all bets returned if Joe O'Reilly walks !!!" , just how sick can a Company get ??
Why does making money seem to more important than having a VERY BASIC respect for a beautiful young woman just on the cusp of making a life for herself.
This same Company thought it "great craic" to entertain a Post Master to corporate hospitality when it was obvious that he was was betting many many times his salary ( source Irish Independent 22 JANUARY 2013 )
    Reads:
A POST office manager who stole €1.75m from his employer to fund his gambling habit has been jailed for three years.

And bookmakers Paddy Power valued his custom so much they took him on lavish, all-expense paid trips to the Europa Cup Final in the Aviva Stadium and the Irish Derby at the Curragh.

Their Corporate Mission Statement should read:
We want Money at any cost---We want Money at any cost !!!

well whether you are disgusted or not affected it is a no lose bet

back him at 4/11 to be guilty, do the max bet €20 - over €7 profit if found guilty
if he is found not guilty you get your €20 back

oh and do it by 11am tomorrow 4th march

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

I was just looking at the exact same bet .

PP are making no money out of it.
If he guilty they pay out.
If he's not guilty, they refund.
In effect it is a marketing cost, nothing more, nothing less.

Paddy Power or any bookie for that matter only care about one thing and that's money, it's unbelievable to think there's no guidelines for things like this, it's despicable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭bleary

I was going to apply for a job with them, i admired them as a company for many years and they are one of the few companies that use my skillset.
I have no problems with gambling or bookies, bookies taught me to love maths and stats.
I cant see the logo now without thinking of a brutal death and destruction, am i strange because i just cant understand the mentality that would think this was a good idea.
I thought the business reporter this morning on morning ireland ( emma?) as just brilliant interviewing the ceo patrick kennedy , he came across like an arrogant arse really.

Deleted my account, never betting with them again

How about opening a book on cancer patients, and betting on whether or not their chemo gives them remission? It would be about the same level.

That's what I did, closed my account. Someone in PP is a dirtyhearted marketer with little imagination (But they'll imagine they're gifted). Also because of an issue over duplicate bets on ireland v England in rugby. I asked them to remedy it, I don't chase results by betting twice. They didn't. so I left when I saw this scandal and joined Boylesports.

My paddy powers account got hacked and I was taken for 1,470e. This was on tuesday night, I only found out on wed evening when I tried to log in and was blocked out, so far i've no idea what's going on or if i'll get anything back, the police seem to be no help at all saying they can't do much

Whether you think the ad is in bad taste or not you have to see the genius business decision behind it. If paddy power donated its years profit to cancer research it wouldn't get this much publicity. The front page of every newspaper and on every radio show and news website for the past few days. As the sayings goes there's no such thing as bad publicity. I'm not offended by the ad but can see how people have been offended. I do like the pun of "money back if he walks" however

It doesn't take genius to exploit the tragedies of others for financial gain and if all it is is a cheap publicity stunt that's even worse.
You seem to think it's all good craic but the families of murder victims would disagree with you, let's hope you never find yourself in the position of those families like the Furlong's in Wexford, PP obviously doesn't care that this has brought back a lot of painful memories for them as Mr Furlong explained to Joe Duffy.
A little empathy for them wouldn't go astray instead of the congratulory tone for PP who incidentally doesn't give a toss about you either.

I do empathise with the families and as I've said I don't find it offensive as thankfully it hasn't affected my family. I have said that I can see how others find it offensive. I am under no illusions and I know that PP don't care about me and never said that they did. Were you offended by their ad campaigns during the World Cup I'm South Africa mocking the boer wars or their depiction of the last supper or any other offensive ad of theirs?

I do however believe that the ad has generated more publicity than any money could buy and will generate business for them, does that reflect badly on PP or society in general?

I fail to see how one can empathise with victims families yet not be offended by this.
I am not aware of the world cup campaign you refer to because I don't bet, I never did , I also don't recall seeing or hearing anything about it in the media. Any ad campaign that pokes fun at religion will always generate controversy but personally I wouldn't be offended as I'm not religious either and the offense felt by Christians in no way compares to that of victims families.
I agree the ad generated a lot of publicity for PP and I also agree that for the likes of bookmakers there is little in the way of bad publicity but again I reiterate it doesn't take a genius to come up with something as tasteless and crass as this.
Like with any marketing campaign there has to be standards because they have proved without doubt how far they are willing to go to make money.
This does reflect badly on PP but with such a a huge turnover they won't even notice those that closed their accounts because of it, whether it reflects badly on society remains to be seen, I do not know how much money was placed on bets.

So the media who are all over this story like flies on shoite are morally outraged that Paddy Power are using it for their own financial benefit. So what exactly are the likes of the newspapers, news channels, tv shows etc doing it for. The public benefit or to increase their audience as thats what the public want to know about?

Far too much pot calling kettle in this.

Well there's a bit of a difference in covering the trial for the media and making a joke out of it, which is what Paddy Power are doing

It's also a large step down from anything I can remember the company doing with their advertising previously, although my memory could be playing tricks here.

How much lower can you go to get a bit of publicity
