General conversation for me now, the OP is going for autobouquet ;)

So, when you delete a bouquet (say Sports) are all the FTA sport channels also deleted?

Nope, whatever is in the FTA bouquet would remain as is, as would the ''All'' channels list.
Its just paring down your list from say FTA/Childrens/News/Documentaries/Sprts/Music/Adult/Specialist/Shopping/Red Button/Interactive and so on,
Down to just FTA or whatever else you'd need to just allow quick and easy use of the box until one learns how to use the bouquetmaker to get what they want, or indeed until they learn how to use one of the PC editors.

On Vix, its really a breeze.
    Press menu> Setup> Service Searching > Autobouquetmaker.
In Autobouqets scroll to provider, and select your region i.e. for Ireland go to Sky Ireland and then you will be able to select Sky Ireland SD/HD Sky Northern Ireland SD/HD.
Personally I tend to use NI HD.
    Then just run the scan.

You can configure autobouquets to just scan the FTA channels or you can run the full scan which will give you a list of all channels numbered alá Sky along with creating subsections.
The list of options here can be a bit overwhelming for a noob ;)

So the easy option here is just run a scan for the region you want, then if you are just wanting to keep FTA when watching a channel, push the up arrow to open the channel list, then press the blue button.
This will bring up a list of subsections(Entertainment\Documentary\News and so on) on this list press menu, select remove entry and delete everything(1 by 1)apart from the FTA bouquet and anything else you want to keep.

You are correct / incorrect at the same time. I decided to keep sky box connected while.wife here and work on this when she's at work (I work nights)
I have followed the above instructions.
I had very few choices in.providers freesat and skyirl, I set freesat to London hd and sky to ni hd (no card in box and won't be for now).
I ran the scan (in autobouquets menu)
    Lots of channels (700 approx)
Chose one that it would let me watch
Pressed up arrow BUT the blue button only gave me favourites option (which I manually populated) I must be doing something wrong or just plain stupid:$ picture of screen attached

Pick either Freesat or one of the SkyIreland options, not both.
When in the channel list, press blue then select freesat that will take you to a list of freesat only channels.

Also, you have channels listed there from Sats other than Sky28.2e.
Which are what the greyed out channels are on that pic.

I am more confused then ever now.
The advice seems so easy to follow but I get so far then I hit a wall, as in their seems to be different options that do not appear for me.
I ended.up just making a favourites list but that's just avoiding the issue.
    Also I can't get the f'ing thing connected.to wifi
I think I'll bang my head off the wall for a bit

    A quick example here.
Pushing up brings up my default channel list(Pic 1)
In that list pushing blue brings up a list of bouquets(Pic2)(yours will be named differently most of mine are custom)
On the Blue button screen, after running autobouquetsmaker what is displayed on your TV?

Ok I'll calm down for a sec.
1 I've done that before and dame problem
2 The blue button only seems to bring me to favourites.
3 I think that could be part of the issue...the satellites, how do I select only.28.2e as I didn't see an option

Really. Sorry about all this crap

Ok. Just to save some confusion. Autobouquets and Autobouquetsmaker are two different programs.
Personally I prefer Autobouquets. I find it easier to setup and Like the FTA layout.
But you need to connect to internet to install autobouquets program.
Can you connect box via Lan to router? You only need to be connected to internet until program is installed. (Also while connected it would be an idea to upgrage firmware, Menu/system/software upgrade. I think)

So if you can bring box and small tv to router and install autobouquets, give it a try.

    Ok is yours a duo2?
Would.I.be better off starting from the beginning? as in when.I opened.from the box (vix preintalled)? If so how do I undo what I've done?
The blue button has only ever said favourites..

    Maybe I'm.finally coming around

    Agreed with regards AutoBouquets.
I went with the maker advice as its what I know the OP has ;)
And I was hoping it would be the quickest way to sort him out.

No Its a duo but they run the same software so the configs, menus and settings are all the same.
Vix is fairly homogeneous across its supported hardware.

It looks like your Vu was shipped with a complete channel list and multisat settings installed which is causing part of your issue, with the grey/blanked out channels causing frustration/confusion when looking for a channel.
It would be easy to say just reflash the box with a virgin image and setup from scratch but given the problems u are having getting the plugin itself running in the 1st place I'd leave a reflash til last ;)
Believe me no insult intended there BTW as everyone here can and will tell you when we started out with Linux receivers we all had similar issues, it is a step learning curve,
    Why O Why wrote: »

The blue button says Favourites on mine too.
It is where folders are created.
You can create them yourself via the remote(looooooong)
You can create them via Dreambox edit or Dreamcontrolcentre, quicker but again there is a learning curve and it can get frustrating while ya figure it out.
You can use the VIX Autobouquetsmaker or install the Autobouquets plugin, quick and customizable and very easy to keep upto date with channel moves/updates.
    Or,
You can connect the box to the internet and download complete settings lists direct from the plugins manager on the box(Quick, easy and painless, downside is you are tied to someone elses ordering)

All these options will create folders/Channel lists in the blue button option on the channel list.

Ok so at least now I know that it seems tjat the shop did.to good a job preinstalling stuff..
Right that gives me some hope!

What is my BEST option from here?
    1. Re flash the box
    2. Use dreamboxedit
    3. Other solution is.anybody near castlerea and wants a few quid to set.it.up?

I do have the time, but maybe ye won't, for a step by step setup

No need for a reflash. To get rid of unwanted channels do the following:

    1. Menu/setup/service searching/tuner config
make sure tuner a and b are config for 28deg east.
    2. Menu/setup/service searching/Manual scan/type of scan=single satellite
    Network Scan=yes
    Clear before Scan=yes
    Only Free scan = yes
    Press green for scan.
    Takes about 15mins

All unwanted channels will be gone. Just the channels you receive will be left.

Then download autobouquets and follow video guide i linked above to run autobouquets.

Even if you decide to go the dreamboxedit route (not recommended) you will need to connect your receiver to your wifi network.

So first thing to do is get your receiver connected to wifi/lan

If he decides to go the dreamboxedit route here is a channel list i prepared for him. It has the DTT from Cairn Hill. I suspect he is picking up DTT from there.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/6d2vw27n6pzs9c3/skyFREE%20%282%29.zip

It took 45 seconds to prepare that channel list with Autobouquets.

Here is another list. This one includes the encrypted channels:

I think its very much a horses for courses thing, and given that the OP is having trouble getting sorted with a plugin that pulls the data and creates the bouquet automatically..
I think its a fair assumption to think they would have even more problems if another layer of complexity was added to the mix.
DBE is a good program, but I don't think it is a stretch to assume that in this instance adding or recommending DBE and its network dependent nature to a poster who is already having issues with an automated method would only frustrate the OP more.

@Why O Why, The advice from Givecredit is fairly spoton and as a starting point is probably the best way to get up and running quickly.
Not that there is anything wrong with Radiowaves' suggestion.(It is the way I learned how to edit settings originally)
It is just more complicated and involved setup that takes some getting to grips with and while it is a method worth learning particularly if you go motorized or multisat ;) it is not one that is needed immediately for a beginner in this game.

Thanks all for continued advice and help
    Here is my plan
Today as per Greenpiece advice I set up a favourites list....now have progress to report to swmbo
Monday day off with no one around till 5:30
Follow givecredit advice to the letter.
    Better progress for swmbo :-P

Also do as radiowaves suggests and download dreamboxedit BUT take time to figure it out

Now take my time and learn about this box

Finally have a layout similar to banie01's which is what I want.
Then enjoy the rest of the features of the box

Sound like a plan? Cause I know I'll be back on here with, I reckon, less idiotic questions

There's been nothing idiotic about your questions mate.

Plus, if you're happy with the way Sky order their channels you probably have no need for Dreamboxedit to be fair but it would do you no harm to give it a go anyway in case you want more control in future.

I'm used to Sky that's all...BUT I really banie01 layout so that's what I'll aim for. The reason I say idiotic is that I'm actually not to bad with computers etx and somehow this got me all confused, stepping back I realised that I jumped in too quick expecting a plug n play box . Now that I realise it's most defo not I will just take my time and have it right. As for future control that is the reason for buying this duo2, it will let me expand my overall media etc. I will still be reporting in to my teachers expecting a gold star when all my homework is done.
As for.the wifi not connecting, well I'll deal with that again

    Good Plan.

Having a favourites list is a good start. At least now you know how to move channels around with remote. Always handy in the future.

When you get box connected to the internet you will be well on your way.

Dreamboxedit is a good program. I have a multisat system that Banie01 helped me out on a few years back. His photos and posts here were a great help to me. Dreamboxedit is every useful for multisat purposes. So maybe down the road when you have got the sat bug you could use that.

Have a good luck at the menus over the weekend. After getting channels loaded, your next hurl will be the epg. Crossepg is the way to go there. Set to Sky 28 deg east. Think you'll find all that in Menu/Setup/epg/configure and crossepg.

Ok, to confuse you further, when you say you want banie01's layout are you talking about channel order or graphics?

Presentation very much depends on image and skin and picons - it may be the default Vix look and if so you'll already have that layout. If not find out what skin he's using.

If it's channel order then it's the order that autobouquets gives you and it's the same as Sky's. The reason why I'd recommend dreamboxedit further down the line is because you can mass delete or move channels.

One of the advantages (I'm told) of these autobouquet programmes is that any changes in frequencies are instantly updated - that really depends on a lot of factors. In the meantime I manually entered new transponder details and had the ITV HDs back yesterday in the space of a few seconds.

Finally, if it's Sky you're used to then there is a skin that imitates the look of a Sky receiver. Others could tell you more - the last thing I'd want is for my receiver to look anything like a Sky :D

NOOOOOO not sky :-SS I want it to look like banie01's layout picons etc. (look at me I'm using strange words and knowing what they are) ill get there once I get the hang of it and ask more questions, I want the screen to look like it is invinitely superior to sky

Organised them in order into favourites.
Now to sort out wifi (aaagh) and download autobouquets, this I expecting will sort the channels into a format like banie01's, yes or no?
Sort them into entertainment, news, kids etc
