vu+Duo2 channel set up (before she kills me)

Hi I'm getting rid of sky and decided I wanted something with a bit more umpf. Last week I went and bought a Vu+duo2. The idea being that I'd start with FTA & saorview (I did get a dvb-t installed) and build a proper setup from there. To start with, to keep the peace, it had to record channels while watching others.
My problem is the channels are all over the place with no numbers etc. I cannot figure how to get the one after the other. I think I'm.in over my head here. Please help before I sell it again

You should really think of using a channel editor (like Dreambox edit) and FTP it to the box.

I guess though that given your question, that may a little advanced at this stage.

Even with using the remote, the key is making a favourite list and then adding the channels you watch and ordering them there.

There is a bit of a learning curve !

I don't mind the learning curve nut I need.to get it in some usable order quick. Ill use a channel editor when I've learnt more
How do you get them into favourite list? I've looked.but no visible way, but then again I probably overlooked it

You should first try auto bouquet updater. banie01 has posted about this this plugin. It will start to give you a bouquet like sky has if you pick correct region. Then you can use DCC or similar editor, just search around and you will get info on this. I am abroad at moment but there are many here that can assist.

Don't panic, you will soon get up the learning curve.

If you want to build some favourites just using the remote it also possible.
Sorry I am not at home and can run you through this.
    It's something along these lines

Press up arrow to see Chanel list, press green button to see satellites list and use up or down arrow to see contents of satellite at 28.2 east

While You are in this channel list (All) press menu! button and the list will show,,,,,chose "Add service to bouquet" and press OK. A bouquet list will show with named favorite..chose that location and the channel will be added .press OK! Each time you do this will add the selected channel.

Afterwards you can select move mode to reorder them again

Sorry I cannot help further as not near box at moment

That will take you hours mate!

The best solution is autobouquet as advised.

And in the meantime download dreamboxedit and start familiarising yourself with it. Advice for each step that stumps you will be available here or on dozens of other sites with a google search.

Other than that I'm bemused by the number of local satellite queries that are posted in the foreign satellite section and allowed to stand

It would surely be better if all sections were merged if there's nobody to moderate :D

What image are you using? Recommend vix. Easiest to use and setup.
    Download from here:

    http://www.world-of-satellite.com/enigma2/openvix/

Check out this new box setup guide here: (guide is bit dated but you'll get the idea)

    http://www.world-of-satellite.com/showthread.php?23571-New-box-set-up-guide

    Get autobouquets in menu/plugins/green button/extensions

Then go to menu/setup/service search/autobouquets/press menu and configure to region you want (HD LONDON recommended) and set to autoupdate daily. (Do not use autobouquetmaker, its conflicts with dtt)

Add Irish terrestrial to your favourites bouquet using remote.

    Good Luck!

    No need to use dreamboxedit.

Well that really depends on whether the OP is happy with the order of channels, especially considering he has FTA channels only :)

I had vix preintalled when I bought.
This is how.I keep getting confused....the advice seems clear but I am completely new.to this hobby (I want to set up my own satellite system, box first then build up)
S*y was all I ever had, I'd love to just pay someone to do it for me ;-)

I've managed to get the fta channels. But there are no channel no's and there are a huge amount of channels showing up that I can't get AND I don't want (only FTA for now). So trying to switch channels.is a pain in the a**
That's why greenpeace said to set up a favourites list to get up and running quickly. From that I gather there is a way (using dreamedit) to sort only the channels I want into the order I'd like (my own epg)
Is that true? I can set up my own epg?
I also bought this box so that I can series record, download and stream etc. BUT I'll wait till I get the basics sorted.
The advice is great here and I plan on setting up favourites list THEN get channels in.order somehow. BUT one step at a time
As for posting in this section,it's the only place that looked right and I'm assuming most replies are from Ireland therefore most relevant to my situation

I wasn't getting at you for posting here mate, just wondering what the policy of the site is (seems strange that a separate foreign sat section was set up with no policy for redirecting queries into the general satellite section).

Anyway, autobouquet is no good to you because it orders the channels the same as a Skybox, including all the ones you don't want!

Dreamboxedit is exactly what you're looking for - search for and download it, it is so much easier than you think it'll be!

Autobouquets will only scan in the free to air channels if you select "Scan only FTA" = Yes

If vix is installed conect box to internet, press menu/plugins/green/extensions and install autobouquets. Configure your desired setup. Set to free to air only and your bouquets will be set up with 55 seconds. the will be updated automatically daily.

No need for dreamboxedit. If you want to rearrange order, this can be done by enabling custom channel swap. But thats for another day. One step at a time...

Read the setup guide I linked to above.

I wasn't aware of that, thanks for the info.

    Can you alphabetize them?

    Can you order by transponder?

Is the "custom channel swap" feature drag and drop like dreamboxedit?

Can you move more than one channel at a time?

Is it really more advantageous to use autobouquet (which still gives a Sky EPG order) over dreamboxedit?

Just asking, I've never used autobouquet (probably because I prefer total control being a control freak :D ).

I was a big dreamboxedit user too. But the big problem was all the retuning with moving of transponders etc.
Autobouquets is install and leave it. It looks after all the retuning itself on a daily basis. Adds new channels etc. Similar to Sky or Freesat box.

Channel swap works by swaping numbers. Eg say ITV2 is a ch 142 and Pick tv is at 115. You could swap one with the other by adding the code:

142=115 in the swap file. There is a swap folder in the autobouquets folder. Dreambox Control Centre is a good program for doing this. Once setup, It should update with no problems.

You can swap as many channels as you like..

You must have done something wrong. When you say you scanned FTA only. Was this in the autobouquets program or the channel search settings. If you have autobouquets set up correctly, press the blue button, You should see an Autobouquets option. Select it. Let it do its thing. Takes 55secs. Then press top of circle on remote and blue button to see new bouquets that was created.

Edit. Duo 2 remote is slightly different to Duo remote. So top of circle might not apply to Duo2 remote. (Maybe up arrow)

I move my channels around a lot (and sometimes many at a time) and have multiple sats too.

I also (as I said) am a control freak so don't like channel numbers forced on me :D

I find my own ways of keeping up with transponder changes too so that is no concern for me either.

    Thanks for the education though.

If your box is not connected to internet you will not be able to install autobouquets.

    When connected,
    Get autobouquets in menu/plugins/green button/extensions

Then go to menu/setup/service search/autobouquets 28/press menu and configure to region you want (HD LONDON recommended) and set to autoupdate daily. (Do not use autobouquetmaker, its conflicts with dtt) Set FTA only =yes

Add Irish terrestrial to your favourites bouquet using remote.

If for some reason you cannot connect to internet, use autobouquetmaker. Set to freesat london region.

You can add Irish DTT to favourites bouquet.

On Vix, its really a breeze.
    Press menu> Setup> Service Searching > Autobouquetmaker.
In Autobouqets scroll to provider, and select your region i.e. for Ireland go to Sky Ireland and then you will be able to select Sky Ireland SD/HD Sky Northern Ireland SD/HD.
Personally I tend to use NI HD.
    Then just run the scan.

You can configure autobouquets to just scan the FTA channels or you can run the full scan which will give you a list of all channels numbered alá Sky along with creating subsections.
The list of options here can be a bit overwhelming for a noob ;)

So the easy option here is just run a scan for the region you want, then if you are just wanting to keep FTA when watching a channel, push the up arrow to open the channel list, then press the blue button.
This will bring up a list of subsections(Entertainment\Documentary\News and so on) on this list press menu, select remove entry and delete everything(1 by 1)apart from the FTA bouquet and anything else you want to keep.

No need to apologise. We all started here the same way as you. The important thing to remember is that you have purchased a super top of the range receiver. And when you get it setup you will be delighted with your purchase.

It takes time to get it right. But its worth the wait.

All you are deleting is unwanted bouquets, not single channels.(Sports/movies/news the general categories of channel used by Sky)
The config options in autobouquetsmaker actually allow it to be setup to populate only what you want.
However as the OP seems to be in a rush to get his setup workable as quickly as possible and isn't interested in getting to grips with the intricacies of the plugin until he has the Mrs satisfied ;)

The advice I gave was to get him what he wanted as quickly as possible without having to give him a tutoriol on Filezilla/Putty/DBE and the numerous other options available to create and transfer channel lists ;)

When he has his FTA list up and running he can take all the time in the world learning the tricks :D

Nope, whatever is in the FTA bouquet would remain as is, as would the ''All'' channels list.
Its just paring down your list from say FTA/Childrens/News/Documentaries/Sprts/Music/Adult/Specialist/Shopping/Red Button/Interactive and so on,
Down to just FTA or whatever else you'd need to just allow quick and easy use of the box until one learns how to use the bouquetmaker to get what they want, or indeed until they learn how to use one of the PC editors.

You are correct / incorrect at the same time. I decided to keep sky box connected while.wife here and work on this when she's at work (I work nights)
I have followed the above instructions.
I had very few choices in.providers freesat and skyirl, I set freesat to London hd and sky to ni hd (no card in box and won't be for now).
I ran the scan (in autobouquets menu)
    Lots of channels (700 approx)
Chose one that it would let me watch
Pressed up arrow BUT the blue button only gave me favourites option (which I manually populated) I must be doing something wrong or just plain stupid:$ picture of screen attached

Pick either Freesat or one of the SkyIreland options, not both.
When in the channel list, press blue then select freesat that will take you to a list of freesat only channels.

Also, you have channels listed there from Sats other than Sky28.2e.
Which are what the greyed out channels are on that pic.

I am more confused then ever now.
The advice seems so easy to follow but I get so far then I hit a wall, as in their seems to be different options that do not appear for me.
I ended.up just making a favourites list but that's just avoiding the issue.
    Also I can't get the f'ing thing connected.to wifi
I think I'll bang my head off the wall for a bit

    A quick example here.
Pushing up brings up my default channel list(Pic 1)
In that list pushing blue brings up a list of bouquets(Pic2)(yours will be named differently most of mine are custom)
On the Blue button screen, after running autobouquetsmaker what is displayed on your TV?

Pick either Freesat or one of the SkyIreland options, not both.
When in the channel list, press blue then select freesat that will take you to a list of freesat only channels.

Also, you have channels listed there from Sats other than Sky28.2e.
Which are what the greyed out channels are on that pic.

Ok I'll calm down for a sec.
1 I've done that before and dame problem
2 The blue button only seems to bring me to favourites.
3 I think that could be part of the issue...the satellites, how do I select only.28.2e as I didn't see an option

Really. Sorry about all this crap

Ok. Just to save some confusion. Autobouquets and Autobouquetsmaker are two different programs.
Personally I prefer Autobouquets. I find it easier to setup and Like the FTA layout.
But you need to connect to internet to install autobouquets program.
Can you connect box via Lan to router? You only need to be connected to internet until program is installed. (Also while connected it would be an idea to upgrage firmware, Menu/system/software upgrade. I think)

So if you can bring box and small tv to router and install autobouquets, give it a try.

That's the layout I'm looking for except just the free channels and the Rte ones (that'll be a completely different problem due to cabling etc)
    Ok is yours a duo2?
Would.I.be better off starting from the beginning? as in when.I opened.from the box (vix preintalled)? If so how do I undo what I've done?
The blue button has only ever said favourites..
Hummmm is that favourites meant to house folders like yours? And I'd have to set them.up?
    Maybe I'm.finally coming around

Found this video. It shows how to setup autobouquets (Not autobouquetsMaker)

    Agreed with regards AutoBouquets.
I went with the maker advice as its what I know the OP has ;)
And I was hoping it would be the quickest way to sort him out.

No Its a duo but they run the same software so the configs, menus and settings are all the same.
Vix is fairly homogeneous across its supported hardware.

It looks like your Vu was shipped with a complete channel list and multisat settings installed which is causing part of your issue, with the grey/blanked out channels causing frustration/confusion when looking for a channel.
It would be easy to say just reflash the box with a virgin image and setup from scratch but given the problems u are having getting the plugin itself running in the 1st place I'd leave a reflash til last ;)
Believe me no insult intended there BTW as everyone here can and will tell you when we started out with Linux receivers we all had similar issues, it is a step learning curve,

The blue button says Favourites on mine too.
It is where folders are created.
You can create them yourself via the remote(looooooong)
You can create them via Dreambox edit or Dreamcontrolcentre, quicker but again there is a learning curve and it can get frustrating while ya figure it out.
You can use the VIX Autobouquetsmaker or install the Autobouquets plugin, quick and customizable and very easy to keep upto date with channel moves/updates.
    Or,
You can connect the box to the internet and download complete settings lists direct from the plugins manager on the box(Quick, easy and painless, downside is you are tied to someone elses ordering)

All these options will create folders/Channel lists in the blue button option on the channel list.

Ok so at least now I know that it seems tjat the shop did.to good a job preinstalling stuff..
Right that gives me some hope!

What is my BEST option from here?
    1. Re flash the box
    2. Use dreamboxedit
    3. Other solution is.anybody near castlerea and wants a few quid to set.it.up?

I do have the time, but maybe ye won't, for a step by step setup

No need for a reflash. To get rid of unwanted channels do the following:

    1. Menu/setup/service searching/tuner config
make sure tuner a and b are config for 28deg east.
    2. Menu/setup/service searching/Manual scan/type of scan=single satellite
    Network Scan=yes
    Clear before Scan=yes
    Only Free scan = yes
    Press green for scan.
    Takes about 15mins

All unwanted channels will be gone. Just the channels you receive will be left.

Then download autobouquets and follow video guide i linked above to run autobouquets.

Even if you decide to go the dreamboxedit route (not recommended) you will need to connect your receiver to your wifi network.

So first thing to do is get your receiver connected to wifi/lan

    Not recommended by you.

Nothing I've seen or read today convinces me that your way is better :p

If he decides to go the dreamboxedit route here is a channel list i prepared for him. It has the DTT from Cairn Hill. I suspect he is picking up DTT from there.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/6d2vw27n6pzs9c3/skyFREE%20%282%29.zip

It took 45 seconds to prepare that channel list with Autobouquets.

Here is another list. This one includes the encrypted channels:
