I was seeing a girl one time and she kept calling me sugar. Needless to say it didn't last long.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Irishcrx

I think it can be a bit cringeworthy hearing it or saying it. I prefer to be called just by my first name tbh..

For some reason it automatically comes across to me as 'patronising old granny' language.

I can never do the whole pet name thing with others, it just feels weird to me. Have no problem with being called a little name like that though!

'Love' I don't mind so much, from a stranger, man or woman, as long as whoever saying it is much older than me.
'Babe' or 'Honey' or similar, no.

Older people always seem to call me 'pet', possibly because I'm small. I've had to train myself to take it in the spirit in which it's intended.

I knew I was being accepted by the locals here in Wexford when they started calling me 'hun'

Stinky or smelly to be honest

I started calling my nearly 3 old babe in an ironic jokey kinda way but now it's totally stuck.

Not into it myself though, very generic.

such irish girl sh!te... "hey hun ye coming for a couple of drinkies with the girlos tonight!?" that type of tripe. AAAAGH!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

Ah depends really, the odd time it can be sweet and it's entirely context dependent on who's saying it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭fricatus

"Babes" - with an S.

WTF? Is that a plural? Do people who use this think they're talking to two people or something?

Yes, because women from other English speaking countries never ever use those terms. Ever.

im sure they do yeah, but we relate to people in ireland, so why ye getting like that for!?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭ElleEm

I really don't like it. Wouldn't be too impressed being called a pet name by a stranger.
My boyfriend calls me babe, I have gotten used to it, but sometimes he will say 'hun' in text, which I hate!! Like the other poster, hun reminds me of the "u ok hun xxx" heads on Facebook!

Because you made a generalisation and I generally hate generalisations.

To say something is "such Irish girl shyte" implies it doesn't apply to girls of other nationalities.

They're actually in the real IRA and have identified you as a protestant.

no it doesnt imply that, i was relating it in my own thoughts to girls i know who use those terms all the time.

if i pointed out specific thought processes in every post, then they'd be too long to read!

Myself and the other half tend to call each other 'babe' actually. Not sure how that started but feels a bit strange at this stage when we use each others actual name.

    Meh. I don't care. I'll do what I want.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,986 ✭✭✭Ihatecuddles

I call my OH pet names all the time. Drives him nuts. Chicken and cutes are my go to ones. He knows Im not happy when I use his actual name.

I started it because it was funny and it annoyed him a bit, but now I cant stop :o

We were getting ice cream in the park once, and my other half paid for them. I said thanks chicken and started walking away. The ice cream man gave him his ice cream and said 'there you go chicken'. I almost died laughing. :D

Just once maybe someone will call me "sir" without adding "you're causing a scene"

Used to really hate it but slowly got used to it with an ex & kind of liked it eventually. OH says it a lot but I'd never use a pet name - maybe his nickname if I'm being extra nice :D

Makes me want to vomit myself, cringy God forsaken drivel.
We don't use such words in rural ulster

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,639 ✭✭✭✭OldGoat

I called my missus 'babe' once and after 20 years she still won't forgive me or let it drop.
On the other hand I call almost everyone else "Darling" and get away with it.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Think you might be in the wrong place if you dont like generalisations hun:)

Don't mind at all if it's in a non-professional situation. It can be quite endearing.

I think it's pretty clear when it's said in the right or the wrong spirit.

I really really hate when anyone says "hun". Isn't that what the Germans were called by the Brits back in World War 1? "Jolly good show old boy, we just shot down some huns".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭pale blue dot cotton

I never thought it bothered me, when I was with the person for a long period of time. I did however think it was kinda unoriginal as everyone's OH seems to be 'babe'.

Recently I was on a date (a third date) and was called babe. There was no more dates.

    Don't care.

Yeh I do. Vast majority of the time it's warm and friendly.

A tiny few times it's been patronising or sleazy. I'd say two or three times in all. The countless other times when it has been nice cancels out those two or three incidents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,068 ✭✭✭pauliebdub

It depends on the context, older women, older relatives , older neighbours etc its fine.

Workmates, people my own age etc no way would i tolerate it and would correct them.

Hate all of them names. My other half calls me sweetie.

A friend of mine calls her boyfriend Sweetie. It gets grating when it's at the end of every sentence!

Oh no, not in Public. That makes me squirm when I hear couples like that. Same reason I refuse to venture out on Valentine's day.. the cheese is unbearable.

The endearing terms need to be kept at home.

If I ever called my dad anything like that I would cringe so hard I'd probably turn inside out.

Thats the kinda joke about it, its on going... like when you drop in and say 'hey babes, sticking the kettle on?' and he goes 'would you ever fcuk off with that...' but with a smile... i think he gets a kick outta it cos when hes having his friendly snap about it, my mam gets the giggles so its stuck !

I have an awful memory for names so I am guilty of using hun, lovey or Chief for a man.
