I was looking at one of these in Sean Hardings in Thurles last week.

As soon as i saw the deerhunter tag i knew it'd be expensive. However i tried it on. The fit was great and it felt good. No restriction of movement, plenty of pockets, interesting digital camo pattern, and best of all a "reinforcement" around the neck and shoulders including the right shoulder.

I presume this is for right handed shooters and to prevent leaking that can occur in some jackets that claim to be waterproof when a gun or other item is pushed up against them. I asked about the level of watproof-ness (is that a word?), and was told if it leaked or did not hold up i'd get a full refund. Can't ask for more.

An interesting feature was the hood. It rolls up and stores away in a pouch built into the collar. It has magnets sewn into the collar to keep the collar upright in bad weather and attached to the hood. Never seen that before.

The only thing now is whether to buy or not. I recently got a small tax rebate so have a couple of euro burning a hole in my pocket. Heading down on Monday to pick up some ammo, new LED for the torch so will make a decision then. I think the price was in or around the €230 - €240 mark.

Was that just for the jacket or with the trousers.

I seen there new line in the sporting rifle mag today.

Its a checkered design with squares and there green brown etc etc. does that sound like the same jacket. The one I seen just the style and fit of the jacket would be ideal for me. Just wondering how warm it would be.

That was just the jacket. Never seen a pair of trousers with it. Must check, but afaik it's just for the jacket.

The pattern is called digital camo as the pattern looks like pixels from a TV. It's supposed to be better than regular camo )or as good) but i've never owned any gear with that pattern so could not say for sure.

It felt warm. Instantly. So i'd say it'd do the job in the cold. not sure how it would fair on a warm/sunny day, but then again those are few and far between, plus i've different gear for summer shooting anyway so not a biggy.

I had a guy out for a shot who is a deerhunter dealer, he was not impressed with the waterproofness of their clothing, spend a little bit more and get some swazi stuff, very hard to beat

I've a load of deerhunter gear. Actually all of my gear is Deerhunter.

It's all waterproof, warm, comfortable, etc. Hence the reason i look to it. There may be differences in comfort level of some clothing, and some of the cheaper stuff may be water resistant rather than proof, but if something is waterproof there cannot be better than that. IOW it either is or is not.

@ the scudd - Does you mate work for Deerhunter direct or just selling their gear in his shop?

The new gear looks well I have to say. I'm the sort of guy that doesn't like to many layers. But wants to be warm but not to warm. 3-4 layers haven to be worn and I get pissed off and uncomfortable.

I to have used a riverswest coat for two years now its as tough as nails no tears despite plenty of abuse and still 100% waterproof. Best thing about them is no maintenance needed other than a cold wash in the machine. i dont know of anyone selling them in Ireland i got my one at the game fair in England I guess you could order over the net.

I've a deer hunter fleeze, great top, comfortable and water proof. It did rip at the stitching on the back also the material faded and went fuzzy after a few washs but I still use it does the job. I have Rivers West clothes, that certainly won't leak, rip or fade but its expensive. I don't think it quality can be beaten but you pay for what you get. It's silent, great fitting, pockets don't have noisey velcro, it has magnetic pocket flaps for pure silence. Got a great review on field sports Britain

I was told it was barb wire proof and I said to dealer yeah right. I got a fork and tried to force it through. Would it go through? Not a hope in hell, This great material, best on the market, dont think anything in waterproof hunting gear comes close to Riverwest. Guarnteed not to leak water was on the label

they guarantee it against barbed wire on their website:

Original Waterproof Fleece (OWF) garments are the most durable ever made. Feel free to take them through briar patches, thorn bushes, or even barbed wire fences. If anything goes wrong with your OWF product within the first 12-months of ownership, it will be repaired or replaced at our discretion.

    waterproof:

    ten year guarantee

Original Waterproof Fleece (OWF) fabric is fully warranted to the original owner against shrinkage and to remain waterproof and windproof for 10 years from the date of original purchase. Should OWF fail in these characteristics within that 10-year period, your garment wil be repaired or replaced with a compar- able garment. This warranty does not cover damage to the fabric from misuse or ordinary color fading over time. This warranty applies to the integrity of OWF fabric only and not garment construction.
