The family of tragic teenager Jonny Byrne will discuss his death on the Late Late Show tonight.

The RTE One show, hosted by Ryan Tubridy, will feature a panel discussion on the ‘NekNomination’ internet craze which contributed to the young hurling star’s death.

That Metro Herald paper yokey tells us:

David Norris will be on. I can't possibly imagine what he'll be talking about...

Samantha Mumba has a five year plan to tell us about...

And, Eddi Reader (of Fairground Attraction) will be in...

    That's it.

Knock it all you like, as usual I'm just glad when I've heard of 'em.

Discussing neknomiations on the late late show is proof the show is out of touch with reality....next week it will be the safe cross code...

Discussing neknomiations on the late late show is proof the show is out of touch with reality.....

I'm not sure the Byrne family may agree with the above statement.

I would suggest it is quite a relevant topic given the tragic circumstances of their son's recent death.

They are to be admired for their stance and appearing (almost directly after their very sad loss) to talk publicly about this topic.

The more awareness people have of this neknomination the greater the possibility of avoiding this tragedy again.

RTE gonna shovel this Garth Brooks outbreak down our throats from now till concert time.

Norris won't be afraid to stir it up in relation to the recent RTÉ/Iona debacle. Tubs won't be able to control that topic if it comes up. Like Bart freeze-framing the moment where Ralph's heart breaks, we'll be able to see the fear in his eyes as he realises he must change the subject NOW, and that he is powerless to do so.

It seems obvious to me that it's a relevant topic (has caused the death of two "participants" in the space of a week). If the LLS - the "Show the nation watches" - can still be said to be relevant, it is appropriate that this be publicised. It's probably likely that much of those watching will not be the target audience, though.

I think it's extraordinarily brave of the Byrne family.

This has got no publicity at all in Britain where the drinking culture is supposed to be the same as here..........are we not overhyping the internet angle?

I have no idea about Britain, but there have been at least two deaths related to it here.

I think it is well worthy of discussion.

With one death and apparently another I wouldn't think so. It's all about showing off on the Internet that makes this craze so popular.

If the target audience aren't watching (and I doubt any discussion over the years regarding young people were being watched by them on the LLS - I know I wasn't in my day...) at least it's bringing awareness to parents who simply may not be clued in. It gives them an opportunity to learn about this stupid craze and talk to their teenagers and discuss same.

Isn't that what everyone always says about the LLS?

Insofar as it raised topical issues and discussed them?

Ask the family and friends of the late John Byrne that.

If the appearance of the Byrne family saves one young person it will be worth their bravery alone appearing.

My point is it's not over for the Byrne family.

The least they can do is bring awareness to this craze.

It is counter-productive.

But will there be a balanced debate? I doubt it because anyone arguing for them(not the stupid ones but the funny ones which put nobody in danger) or for internet freedom could be seen as being disrespectful

    Yes.

    Two needless deaths.

I read one of the articles from one of many journalists articles falling over themselves to slate neknominations last week,
where he said what happened was "the teenager was dared to jump into the river" - they obviously don't understand
    what a neknomination is.

If you don't think it was anything to do with a stupid game, I disagree.

So there will be no need for an inquest if we all know what the cause and circumstances of these deaths. We do NOT know and it is wrong to jump to conclusions. Many young people die every year by doing stupid and risky things. Maybe we should just blame it all on 'social media' and not bother with inquests.

Jesus H Christ. A Neknomination is where friends nominate their pals to upload a video of themselves taking a drink. Then that person nominates another friend. Nowhere does it state that you jump into a fast flowing river during an orange alert weather warning.

The lad made a stupid decision and it's unfortunately cost him his life. I feel terrible for his family and all but I'm Sick of this blame culture.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,964 ✭✭✭For Reals

I'm quite sure the LLS may get some mileage out of the Neknomination fad, but it won't save one life. Do I think the kind of teenage Gombeen, (or Judge) thinking of jumping on board such a thing will be watching the LLS and be touched by the concerns of Tubbs & Co.? No to both.
I'm very cynical about any misery piece the LLS does. I believe its filler. I question their use of genuine people who are touched by such things. The fact that they have it regularly and formatted takes away from any legitimacy for me.
In this case the media as usual love a label or gimmick and that's what is really drawing the LLS producers to this.

If they don't discuss Panti-gate with Norris, the LLS should close its curtains for the last time. It will no longer be the talk show that tries and fails, just a waste.

Mumba? I'm on the edge of my seat.
    Garth Brooks impersonator? Jesus wept.

Seriously considering not watching tonight. Between the homophobia and this stupid internet game, it's almost guaranteed to be a thread of "serious debate" as opposed to the usual craic.

I know both are serious issues, worthy of discussion. Just not for me on a Friday night.

(On the other hand, I don't want to miss the Garth cover band...)

Everyone complains that the guests are usually from the RTE Canteen - well, here's someone from TV3 instead.

Lisa Cannon from Xpose is training for a Power Lifting Competition and she's making a programme about it. She's on tonight.
