26sdrawkcab; Welcome to the carb club.... Fair play to ya, diet looks great and your reading the right books, fantastic start!! Im really jealous of you now actually because i remember the buzz i felt after my first week of low carbing ;-)

If you keep this up, you can expect to see large, steady drops in weight over the coming weeks and months. Whats even sweeter is that it becomes practically effortless when you develop the right habits. Dont be alarmed if you dont see much weight loss next week as it may take every second or third week for a drop to appear on the scales, as it did for me.

Dont get me started on the low fat brigade!! Get used to the funny looks and tuts, thanks to good marketing fat has almost become criminal and most people are blindly following. Some of my colleagues and family members cant believe my weight loss was because of more fats... They still insist on having their sh!tty low fat products, spreads, skimmed milk and processed crap while still not actually loosing meaningful weight.... despite me loosing 2 stone if front of them.

And dont be worried about rewarding yourself every so often either. My diet is so steady now that i can easily fit in beers, eating out and takeaways every couple of weeks.

On the recommendation of a poster here I looked into low carb ways of eating.

You gave up coffee? Do yourself a favour and try bulletproof coffee.
Have for breakfast with nothing else. Tablespoon of unsalted butter and also coconut fat, pour in coffee and stir.
Had this morning at 8 wasn't hungry until 2.30.
    Really good concentration.

I'm not trying to lose any weight but im sure it couldn't do any harm if you were.

ive also gone from 3 coffees a day to one

OP fair play, you're making great strides already. Ignore those –frankly immature – women at work and keep going. I eat fairly low carb most of the time and like you are seeing your body really gets very used to it. Keep going as you are and you will soon be inder the 100k mark.

Buzz is right, it's a great feeling to feel in control of my body again

Would be delighted to get under the 100kg mark as my first little milestone.

I have an appointment with one of my consultants on Monday for treatment and an appointment with another one of my consultants around mid-March. Both of them suggested that weight loss could help my recovery both physically and mentally (because obviously my weight does get me down as well as the physical pain I'm in from my injuries getting me down) and it'll be great to be able to show them that I am trying and have some results to show them.

    From 106.9kg on 9th February, I'm down to 99.6kg :D

I have been really put to the test over the past few days. I was at a 40th on Saturday and at around 11:30p.m., when copious amounts of alcohol had been consumed, mini pizzas, sandwiches, mini quiches, chips and chicken goujons were put out on all of the tables. It took all of my resilience to pull apart a few sandwiches and just eat the fillings but I managed. I even managed the following day, I don't suffer from hangovers but after a night of drinking I'd usually eat all around me but not this time, I stuck to my guns :D The alcohol didn't have a huge effect on the scales but I'm not a big drinker anyway, once every couple of months is about it, so I wouldn't have been too upset if it had affected the numbers in a big way because I know it's just a once in a while thing.
I also had some sad news this week and I would normally have comforted myself with chocolate and fizzy drinks but I have been strong and stuck to the plan.

My first goal has been reached and now I am eager to reach my next goal which is to tick off my first 10kg. Not long to go :D

That's great work and fantastic discipline, well done, I bet you feel better already. Your second goal is very achievable, stick with it, delighted for you.

That's some good low carbing. even if you did decide to indulge slightly, just for the sake of an occasion, the difference would be negligible on the scales as one night would be easily balanced out by a good weeks work.

Don't worry about the alcohol that much. If it was spirits and diet mixers then that's perfectly fine on a night out as they have no carbs. Also beers are not the worst as some of them are reasonably low in carbs. Bottles of miller are my usual. Its ciders and alcopops that will totally F**K things up!

As for the weight loss, 107 kg down to 99.6; that's a serious dent in your weight in such short time. I bet the motivation is surging through you at this stage;-) I know some people on crappy fad diets who would give there right arm for those results....

    Thanks.

Yeah, it was vodka and slimline tonic. I don't drink beer, cider or wine so I'm kind of lucky in that way.

Yeah, so motivated all the time!

Dont stress if the weight loss slows down. You'll need to recalculate periodically and lower your calories as you get slimmer.

Absolutely delighted to say I am now down to 98.2kg :D
As you can tell, the losses have slowed down but the numbers are still going down at a steady pace so I'm happy with that.
This is the lightest I have been since just after the crash (even though at that time I lost about a half a stone very quickly because I was so sick due to medication).

Aside from the weight loss, I have noticed some great benefits to my health in general. One of them, which is absolutely huge for me, is quite a large reduction in the amount of fluid in my left leg. I broke my left leg in the crash and since then, my left leg has been about 2-3 times the size of my right leg and that fluid obviously caused lots of other problems, pain etc. Since I changed my diet, the fluid has reduced quite a lot, there is still a lot of fluid in my leg but not as much as before so this is a huge deal for me.
Other health benefits are that my skin is so clear, I have never really suffered from spots but I do have eczema and I have found that my skin has improved so much and isn't so dry and feels softer.
I am sleeping better. This is another benefit directly related to the crash, due to the amount of pain I'm in, I haven't really been sleeping much over the past 18 months. I'm still not getting a full restful night but definitely getting more sleep.

Overall I just feel more energetic, my concentration is better, I feel happier - I know that might sound a bit mad to anyone who hasn't struggled with their weight but I feel happier, not just about my weight but just about myself in general.
When I feel hungry it's not the same feeling as I used to have. Before I started this, when I felt hungry I would feel very queasy, almost on the verge of throwing up, until I ate, but now I don't feel like that.
Also, when I eat I feel satisfied straight away, I'm not reaching for extras.
I feel like I love food even more now but my meals are more satisfying and taste so much better because my palate has changed. Things (which were bad for me) that used to taste lovely now taste weird and not as appealing.

It's just really changed a lot of things for me, not just my weight :D

Well done you, its great you are seeing so many benefits, hopefully you will continue to improve, you deserve good luck after that horrible crash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 160 ✭✭oscar_mike

That's excellent news, a tonne of hidden benefits will start to emerge with this new lifestyle. Improved mental health is definitely one of them. You can also look forward to things like steady energy, a reverse in insulin resistance, clean arteries, reduced blood pressure to name a few.

In fact i am willing to bet that the leg fluid situation will improve further with the more weight you loose. An injury like that can be exacerbated when putting pressure or weight on it, causing more inflammation and pain. So the more weight that comes off, the better blood circulation will get around your body/leg and fluid retention should be reduced in the process.

That's fantastic, you are doing great. What s your next target? Bet you have much more energy, that's a lot of weight lost. Id say the gang at work are quieter now:p

Next goal is to get to 90kg, which is about half way for me. I would like to get to 80kg and then assess how I'm feeling, whether I would like to lose more or just maintain at that stage.
It's very easy to read charts and BMI things about what weight you should be but I think it depends on your build as well and I am quite broad in the shoulders and have always had a very slim face compared to the rest of my body, even at my heaviest, so I want to make sure I'm in proportion.

I'll be 27 in June and when I was 23 I promised myself that I was going to get my health in order and get control of my body again by the time I turned 25. I have read that drastic changes to weight after 25, particularly in women, can seriously affect your reproductive system and obviously your health overall.
Obviously my promise didn't quite work out because of the crash and all that has happened since then but I would be happy to keep that promise I made myself for my 27th birthday.
I am married and, while kids are not on the cards for quite a while yet, obviously a healthy body can help produce a healthy pregnancy and I have always told my husband that I did not want to ever get pregnant while being so overweight due to the problems that could cause. That has always been in the back of my mind as I get older.

It's funny you mention the gang in work, denial is a crazy thing.
They seem to have a very skewed idea of what I eat, for instance when they see me eating nuts (I eat pistachios or cashew nuts, unsalted etc, just plain old nuts) they seem to associate that with a big bag of salted peanuts, when they see me eating food that I've cooked in real butter, they associate that with mountains of toast dripping in butter and when they see me using cream, they associate that with whipped cream on a cake or something.
They all see what I eat (we have a sort of small dining room in work), they all see and tell me that I'm losing lots of weight but yet, none of them are willing to admit that it is obviously something that works confused.png
I don't speak about it at all to them unless they bring it up because I get a little hint of jealousy but I don't see the point of that because anybody can lose weight and anybody can gain weight.

I have found that letting in little bits of carbs here and there actually helps to get bigger losses but for the time being I am continuing to stick strictly to my no-carbs plan.
For instance I was a bit stuck 2 weeks ago, I was in Dublin, rushing for the train, absolutely starving (had been shopping all day :P) so I grabbed a relatively healthy sandwich and a green tea rather than getting on the train and buying overpriced crap. If that had happened to me a year ago, I would've bought a crap sandwich, crisps and a coffee and just thought feck it I've wrecked the whole day now and then bought crap on the train as well.
I went right back to my good ways as soon as I was home and off the train and that week I had another big loss. I read in the book that that can sometimes happen but can't remember why.
I still don't eat carbs regularly though, that was a sandwich 2 weeks ago and on Friday I had a decaf coffee with 3 chocolate biscuits and that's kind of been more or less it.

I have learned so much about what my body needs since I started this. My body doesn't need energy stores from carbohydrates because I cannot exercise sufficiently to use them up so they are just sitting there, building up as fat and creating other problems for my body and obviously given my injuries it's worse for me to allow that to happen.
However, my body does need protein and fat and nutrients and vitamins from veggies.
My body clearly needed more water than I was giving it, even though I have always drank a lot of water, not as much as I do now though, so I am really feeling the benefits of that. At the start I used to have to almost force myself, all the time reminding myself drink the water, drink the water but now, if I sit down and I don't have a glass of water with me I feel like I'm missing something.

It's just been great altogether. I feel like I have the winning lotto numbers or something :pac:

That's very positive that your attitude is changing. Regarding the gang at work you are right not to talk to them about your weight loss, they sound like a jealous lot. Surround yourself with supportive people. It will be of huge benefit to you to be a healthy weight when you decide to try for a baby. You have lots to look forward to, hopefully you will be able to get back to exercise too, it will be so much easier to exercise with out the extra weight. Good luck.

Looks like your well and truly on top of things. Its only a matter of time now until you reach your goal:-) As for your work colleagues ....its TOTAL jealousy and insecurity on their part. The majority of people are so brain washed by the whole low fat industry that they would shun good whole foods for any useless quick fix, low fat crap on the shelf. Maybe now you are seeing how true this is. Like you just figured out, i keep my mouth shut about it. Maybe one of them might be smart enough to ask for your advice. People in my life refuse to believe that what i eat causes weigh loss, despite the weight coming off right in front of them!!!!

FYI, there are plenty of good books on this subject and its health benefits, you seem like you really have embraced this new life style. I strongly recommend this book to keep you going. Easy to read and super informative. You will never think twice about heart disease and cholesterol after it!

Thanks, and thanks for all the advice and help, particularly to oscar mike who originally suggested low carb :D

I've been looking for some books just to get more and more information about it all and keep learning. Thanks for that.
