I picked this item... https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1/1509255_748851948458389_1258366241_n.jpg ...up from another site. I checked with the hotel, mentioned JW and The Iona Institute and a booking has been for the 4th March from 7PM on (probably to get the room set-up). They seem to be expecting large numbers at the event. I'd only ask that if anyone does go to it, don't be tempted to behave or respond in a way that'll suit the Institute's book or solicitors.

    We have a live one......

"FORMER IRELAND LOCK Neil Francis has courted controversy with his comments about homophobia in sport.

Stressing that he was relating to his own experiences in sport, Francis commented, “Gay men don’t play sport because it is too manly.” He added that he, as a former sportsman, does not like ballet. He also remarked, “Do a survey of the hairdressing industry and find out how many heterosexuals are in that.”

Jeez, what's he implying about guys who do like Ballet? Or girls who play "manly" sport?

with "enlightened" attitudes like that, I'm shocked that gay men don't feel like making their sexuality known:rolleyes:

If you can read this, you're too close!

He's a former rugby international. He scored a famous try against Australia in the '91 WC at Lansdowne Rd that didn't win the match for Ireland.

A lock is variously a sure fire pick, a device for securing doors and windows or a second row rugby forward. Take your pick. In this context, you might opt for the second option.

Hell no! He was a lazy git on the pitch and though I haven't read the article, judging by the quotes, his thoughts and opinions are equally so. He made the international squad more because of a lack of options at second row rather than him possessing much talent, so a career in second rate journalism is no surprise

Would this mean that the Cork hurling team isn't 'manly' enough?

I wouldn't like to pedal that particular theory down Leeside.

Well I wouldn't like to walk up to the Cusak brothers and tell them they were not 'manly'. Though as they both seem really nice, they'd probably just walk away sadly shaking their heads at the frailty of humanity.

I have a gay friend and he's more manly than my straight mates and myself. Dirty finger nails the lot!

I dare say that Neil Francis (whoever he is?) would be shocked to read about Kristin Beck.

Kristin Beck (born Christopher T. Beck, June 21, 1966) is a former United States Navy SEAL who gained public attention in 2013 when she came out as a trans woman. She published her memoir in June 2013, Warrior Princess: A U.S. Navy SEAL's Journey to Coming out Transgender detailing her experiences.[1]
Beck served in the U.S. Navy for twenty years and is the first openly transgender former Navy SEAL. The Atlantic Wire, Salon, and Huffington Post have speculated that Beck's story may lead the Department of Defense to revisit its policies against transgender people openly serving in the US Military.

Yeah definitely no way there was ever anyone or anything other than the straightest of straight men involved in the Blackrock College rugby team.

I would have thought that adding an r to a certain word would have made the first definition the most appropriate in this context. ;)

    And the retreat from Moscow......

RUGBY pundit Neil Francis has apologised "unreservedly and profusely" for his "extremely clumsy" comments surrounding gay people and sport.

"When I got home I had a listen to the interview again and it didn't sound like me at all – and a lot of people who listened to it said 'it's not your form'," he said on Today FM's 'The Last Word' programme yesterday.

"Some of the points I tried to make were very clumsily made and my language and the analogies I tried to make were quite poor and poorly expressed, and it's unusual for me not to be able to articulate myself. In this instance, I was unable to do so.

"Listening to what I said, on reflection, I probably said the wrong things and some of the things I said were extremely clumsy. On reflection, I would like to withdraw those comments and apologise profusely and unreservedly."

At least he didn't go 'taken out of context'/'Nurofen Plus'.

Anyone think an 'apology' that contains a qualifier such as highlighted above ain't no apology?

I tend towards that, but he does finish by withdrawing his comments and apologising profusely and unreservedly, which is pretty clear cut. <shrug>

But by including 'probably' he has given ammunition to the 'ohhh the PC Brigade made him apologise, they are shutting down free speech again' numpties.

He made his original comments without the need to qualify them, he could have apologised in the same way.

Personally I would prefer he had said 'yup, that is what I think' than offer a half-assed 'soz' and pull out a 'but...but...docu about gays like....' which seems to be a twist on 'some of my best friends'.
