gfs phone was stolen on O'Connells street phone

My gf just called me to say her new iPhone (a gift from her dad at christmas) had been stolen from her hand on OConnell street tonight.

She's a really caring generous person, and despite her Cry's for help, she was ignored.

I live the other side of the country but hate to see her so upset. Have an old spare phone here until I can get a second hand Iphone for her. I'm leaving here at 5am so I can meet her before work.

She's so upset and its hard to be away from her tonight. Maybe if she were more assertive/confident this wouldn't happen, but her caring nature is what I love about her most.

Whoever did this, it was a very low act and I hope you know you've caused an awful lot of pain and upset to someone who always tries to help others in her life.

I'm not sure if Karma exists, but in this case I hope its shared particularly fairly.

That's a terrible thing to happen but how would being more assertive /confident stop someone from snatching something from her hand and legging it?

If I saw someone in distress over an iphone I probably wouldn't respond. It's not worth getting into physical difficulty over a piece of technology when you don't know what kind of weapon the assailant could be carrying. The gardai don't care either.

50/50 chance it will be traded into a pawn shop

I was in Milan 2 years ago and tourists were using their iPhones and iPads to take pictures. The locals used their phones without fear.

Why is it that ireland has such a massive problem with petty theft. If you used your phone in a Main Street anywhere in ireland and had it stolen you would be labelled a gob****e.

The cops in Milan were visible and took no crap.

No matter what city you're in, you always stay aware and keep your valuables close and discreet when outdoors. Milan and many other European cities have pickpocket hotspots and you will get caught out, no matter how good the police are, if you're careless and open to theft (backpacks etc left with zips right at top and loosely open, etc)

I'm not saying you have to be afraid to take your phone out, and there are lots of people who use their phones, cameras, and whatever happily in Dublin. This was just an unfortunate case where someone made an opportunity swipe and got away with it, could happen anywhere.

she should have walked down the street to Pearse St. and bought the phone back from those dodgey "phone" shops that stay open all night.
That street has been discussed a 100 times here. it's an awful crime ridden street - also considered the main street in Ireland...

She was playing.music on her phone and just took it out to change song. I don't blame anyone for not intervening. Its just really frustrating when someone you love is hurt and there's very little you can do to help.

Did she write her IMEI anywhere, or have the phone box? Make sure it's logged if possible, because if that person tries to pawn it, many places use Checkmend to see if it's been reported stolen, and they'll confiscate it if it has. Not always, but worth a shot.

The IMEI is usually on the phone box if she had that. I just know in the last place I worked we did catch a few people flogging stolen phones, so there's just that small chance.

Sorry it happened Best advice I can give you for your next phone is to set up Dropbox to sync your photos and contact list, notes etc. and you can at least remotely wipe and lock it should the worst come to the worst. At least it minimises the blow (which is still fairly hard, especially if you paid the full 600 euro or whatever for a PAYG phone)

Definitely. Both Android and iOS (not sure about Windows Phone) have their own tracking/remote lock software now provided you set it up beforehand - can give you at least peace of mind should it get into someone elses grimy hands.

I might be mistaken on this OP, but if I recall correctly, once you sync with iTunes, the IMEI gets stored on the PC. You can then retreive it from there.

That's good advice and I think I'm gonna listen to it, haha. Yeah, remotely wiping/locking it would have been a nice feeling this time around but luckily I had a passcode lock on it so I don't think anyone can get into it anyway (although I will admit I sort of hoped they'd break it and then go through my stuff, realise I'm a sound enough individual and make an effort to get me my phone back; naive youthfulness is great). Yeah it does. Thankfully I got my phone relatively cheap (a relative got an upgrade and gave me his old iPhone cause he wouldn't be using it) but I'm certainly taking a hit having to replace it.

Preferences > Devices > Highlight phone and IMEI should be there. Good feature actually. Make sure that IMEI/number is reported stolen then.

Does she not have find my iphone on her phone?? That'll give you the location of it. Also she'll get the IMEI from her iTunes account that she syncs her music from.

Assuming she set it up with itunes and has icloud then she should have findmyiphone installed automatically. Unfortunately though FindMyIphone and these other apps only works when the phone is still left on, the scumbag that stole it will more than likely have turned it off shortly after robbing it and then it becomes useless as a method for tracking the phone.

You can however lock the phone or erase it with it which will still work the next time the phone is turned on. Its a piece of mind if nothing else that its erased and her photos and contacts arent on it anymore. Also obviously ring her network provider with the phone number and IMEI and have them block the phone and sim.

One thing I've always noticed and found rather jarring is how pretty the Trinity College vicinity of Dublin south of the river is kept looking pretty and inviting while the 'main' street of the city is often neglected. At Christmas time Grafton St and the surrounding area was loaded with lights and O Connell St looked like a cheap afterthought. Is it any wonder that O Connell/Abbey St is in the state it's in when it's being neglected? I'm hoping the connection of the Luas lines might displace that slightly because there is a definite gap going on and it's letting the city down.

I'm sorry for her loss, dude. iOS 7 has a security feature that should render the device useless, though this is little comfort to you unfortunately.

If Find My iPhone is enabled on an iOS 7 device, then if someone attempts to restore the phone, they'll be prompted for the Apple ID and password that the phone was registered to.

I was feeling a bit down a while back about a certain something or other, and somehow found myself on the 'long-term illness' forum here on boards.

Needless to say, perspectives became clear, and the bad mood didn't last long.

Did you not have a free iCloud account set up that would give you back ups of your pictures (Maybe not 2000 though), contacts, notes etc.

Also Whats app and Facebook are apps so they have your data.

Losing your phone nowadays,whist a pain and expensive should only mean loss of the actual device, all data should be easily recoverable.
With icloud, you just sign your new phone and it starts syncing all your apps, data etc.

He, in embarrassment or whatever, stops his run (he was running past me) and comes back and faces me and says "Give me the ****ing phone or I'll ****ing clock ya" or something to that effect.

Now, those of you who have met me know I am not a small man. While average height, I'm not average weight and I'm far from shy. This fellow was about my height but about 10 stone weight and as far as I could tell, had no weapon.

In my other hand at the time, in a paper easons bag was a copy of the new Alex Ferguson biography which mammy seaneh had asked me to pick up for her as a gift for one of their friends who is a man united fanatic.

As the little scummer is getting in my face I raise my hands (with the book in my right hand now) and say "not happening bud, walk on, I don't want any hassle".

Little prick gets closer and I instinctively smacker him across the bridge of the nose with the book quickly followed by another smack across the side of the head with the book and a well drawn left boot to the bollocks.

He bends over in pain and them scarpers off shouting back "you're ****ing dead, I'll get you, I'll remember you".

If he had a weapon I would have just given him the phone, no sense in taking the risk. But seeing as I thought I could atleast hold me own with him, I decided "**** this" and defended myself and my possessions as is allowed by the law.
