    http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/15/world/asia/india-danish-woman-gang-rape/

New Delhi (CNN) -- A Danish woman has filed a police complaint saying she was gang-raped and robbed near a train station in the Indian capital of New Delhi on Tuesday night, authorities said.In her complaint, the 51-year-old woman said she lost her way while sightseeing in the city. She asked for directions from some men who accosted her and subsequently robbed and raped her, CNN's sister network IBN reported. The woman has since returned to Denmark, police said. Before she left, she refused to undergo a medical checkup required to confirm sexual assault, said Alok Kumar, deputy commissioner of New Delhi police.

Three men convicted in gang rape of American tourist in India
"She didn't have injuries that required medical attention," he said, declining to provide further details on the woman's complaint.A number of people are being questioned, but no arrests have been made so far, police said.Denmark's Ambassador to India, Freddy Svane, said Wednesday that a rape complaint had been filed by a Danish citizen, saying that the woman was receiving the support normally provided in such situations.

Violent crimes against women have been in the spotlight in India since a 23-year-old woman was raped and beaten by several men on a bus in December 2012.The victim later died in a Singapore hospital. The shocking attack provoked outrage across India, leading to calls for improved safety and treatment of women.Since then, the Indian media have intensified their focus on rape cases. Attacks against foreign women have also been reported.

Last year, six men were sentenced to life in prison for the rape and robbery of a Swiss woman in central India. The Swiss woman and her husband were on a cycling tour across India in March and had set up camp near a forest. A group of men from a local tribe assaulted them, beating the husband and raping the wife. The couple decided to stay in India to pursue charges against the men.Earlier this month, a Polish woman told police that she was abducted at knife point in in Mathura, south of New Delhi, by a taxi driver who later drugged and raped her, according to IBN. The woman said that when she awoke, she was in the Nizamuddin area of New Delhi.
Opinion: Victims blamed in India's rape culture

What are you looking for, an opinion on rape? I'm going to come out and say it's bad.

what are you looking for from this? The obvious think to take from this is that bad things happen sometimes.

Sad to hear. India has the second biggest population so there is bound to be some bad apples.

Too many gang rape stories happening in India lately.
I've had some personal dealings with Indian men in Ireland (through jobs & socially) and .... well ... guess if i finished my line a mod would come in and infract me.

There are 1200000000 people in India, give or take; I would be surprised if there weren't over a thousand instances of rape a day there. The question is why does the media only go wild over such instances when the victim is not Asian.

A friend of mine was doing some travelling around Asia recently. She was planning to spend a couple of months in India but wasn't too aware of the reports of the reports of rapes; I didn't say anything because I didn't want to scare her but she got out of there within a couple of weeks anyway because she said that there was a really unpleasant, slightly menacing, vibe in the place.

Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable there, especially on my own.

Female tourism in India has decreased a lot.
    Mar 2013
A survey by Indian chambers of commerce found a 35 per cent decline in the numbers of female foreign tourists since the 23 year girl was raped and mutilated by six men on a Delhi bus before she was dumped on the road and left to die.

Well maybe local women are less likely to report it, Maybe since its a foreign person its more likely to make international news etc.

It's always more news when it's a tourist, or particularly cruel.

I've had the opposite experience. Used to work with a lot of Indian men, all of whom bar one were extremely respectful of all of the women in the place. One wasn't, he grabbed my ass a few times when we were in work one night. I was very uncomfortable and had an unofficial word with his brother, who was a manager. Found out a few days later that the manager had torn him apart at home and punched him for bringing shame to the family by disrespecting me.

Given the population of the country, the number of rape cases we've heard about lately doesn't shock me, sadly. The poor victim must be horrifically traumatised :(

More like tourists actually are interested in knowing if they are likely to be safe when going somewhere.

The USA and the UK (among others) have more reported rapes per capita than India...its just that they use the rape cases of western tourists in faraway lands to take the spotlight away from the rape problem in their own countries.

(Although I'll admit that "reported" rapes are not the best indicator of the number of rapes in a country, they tend to be a fairly good benchmark. Secondly, the source I got this from had quite a few exceptions)

Despite this, the fact is that this rape was truly horrific, but don't let that tar your judgment in relation to India (which has far more problems as a nation than its rapes per capita, such as how it recently criminalised homosexuality. I haven't even seen that story on major news channels)

I JUST GOT A BIZARRE FEELING, THE FREQUENCY OF RAPE ARE HIGH AND THE VICTIM SHOULD BE IN THE SAFE AGE BOUND AND HAVE APPOPRAITE DRESSING.

BUT THANKS GOD IM NOT GIRL:p SO I SHOULD BE SAFE ANWAY

I don't know about that either. There are some seriously unhealthy attitudes toward women in South Asia. Of course sexism isn't limited to the third world, but it seems to be much more overt in places like India and the Middle East.

I've heard that sexism is particularly prevalent in Turkey, particularly towards western women.

It depends where you go really. I've been all over Turkey and in Istanbul there is a huge feminist movement. I've been in clubs in that city and women were drinking and dancing with the best of them, it was no different to parts of Western Europe. In parts of rural Turkey though, things are significantly more conservative.

I was in Palestine a number of months ago and had a few people making kissing noises at the girl I was with in a pretty f*cking sleazy manner. There was also a lot of blatant staring going on. However, most women get used to that fairly quickly and overt harassment is quite rare.

Same as the huge population, China and US have less problem. I think the root is unbalanced gender ratio. Its 1000 Male :880 Famale in somewhere of India. While the reasonable figure from biology is 1000:950 at least or little bit higher than 950

Dunno if you are feigning ignorance here, if not you can read the link below.

    http://www.mediacollege.com/journalism/news/newsworthy.html
    3. Proximity
Stories which happen near to us have more significance. The closer the story to home, the more newsworthy it is. For someone living in France, a major plane crash in the USA has a similar news value to a small plane crash near Paris.

Note that proximity doesn't have to mean geographical distance. Stories from countries with which we have a particular bond or similarity have the same effect. For example, Australians would be expected to relate more to a story from a distant Western nation than a story from a much closer Asian country.

there was a previous thread referencing studies about people caring more about their own race too.

You mean the western media? Probably because it's more prone to covering stories of relevance to the west. Oh wait, that woman on the bus was Indian.

It's being reported that an 18 year old German woman was raped in India - http://www.thelocal.de/20140115/german-tourist-18-raped-on-indian-train

I wonder which charity organisation thought it wise to send an 18 year old alone on a nocturnal train ride through rural India.

That doesn't really sound like the opposite. I'd like to believe that most women have never been molested by a colleague.

You got sexually abused by an Indian man, but this proves the opposite?

Im sure that the brother hit the kid. Im also pretty sure that you never reported the incident and were satisfied with that 'retribution'. Where HR notified? The gardai? Was the chap sacked?

Did I say that? This person claimed that her experience with Indian men was the complete opposite to what another poster experienced. She then went on to say that she was sexually assaulted by one.

Oh god. I knew somebody would say something like that. One guy grabbed my ass out of about 70 Indian men I know. His brother immediately did what he felt would restore their family honour.

Now, comparing that to irish guys? I'd say triple that ratio have grabbed my ass, with no apology.

One idiot out of every single Indian man I know. Apologies from both him and his brother. An Irish guy has never apologised for that.

Yes, I went to HR. He was moved to a male only branch. No, I didn't go to the police because I'm not going to go to the police about something so minor.

For me the arguement that because its happened to a Westerner in India its getting all the media attention holds no water, if someone was gang raped and murdered after getting on a bus in Ireland it might make international headlines but if within 18 months a tourist then gets gang raped it WOULD make international headlines.

Lol, you have it on google alerts do you?

From what I've read, attitudes to sexual violence in Indian culture as a whole don't seem to be great. Indian women have spoken about it themselves, and the protests after that bus case would seem to suggest that there's a lot of concern about it within the country. (no they weren't just protests about that case)

My advice to women would be to stay well clear of India. My sister was out there with her husband about 5 years ago and said she felt very uncomfortable. The men just stare and ogle like they have never seen a blonde woman before.

Strange comment.I'd say it's pretty mixed for most other countries but I've yet to hear any positives from India.the poverty of the place is astounding given the fact that they have space agencies and a large military expenditure. I feel sorry for the kids in the place.I watched a documentary about street kids in New Dehli last month and I'd a lump in my throat watching it.The amount of kids there, young kids with no one to fend for them and nothing more than the clothes on their backs was horrific.
They're also bringing in new laws in India to stop child labor and a lot of child welfare groups and orphan children themselves are actually lobbying against the ban because the kids will receive zero welfare from the state and will face starvation if the ban goes ahead. So all in all I reiterate - a hole of a country.

I'm perfectly aware how poor a country is but from people who've actually BEEN there, I've heard very good things. Obviously they've mentioned the poverty is shocking but they also talked about a lot of very positive aspects to it.

To simply label a country that size with such a huge population with such an ancient and rich culture and history and such a variety of landscapes as a "****hole", is even stranger in my book and displays staggering ignorance.

To say you never hear anything good at all about India is a stupid comment.

When was the last time you heard a good piece of news from Spain, for example? Ireland was full of bombings and murders in the international press in the 80's. The news rarely paints any country in a positive light as it almost exclusively reports bad news. I'd prefer to take the opinions of people who've actually been there over the media with vested interests (ratings...people don't want to hear "good news") to form my opinion tbh.

Have you ever been there? I have. Yes there is some shocking poverty and western women probably shouldn't travel solo but there are many beautiful places to visit, the culture is fascinating, the food is fantastic and the people by and large are helpful and respectful. I'd suggest that you watch some travel guides rather than relying on negative programes as your soul source of information.
