Advice on mounting new scope to .22lr

    Hi all

Picked up a cheapo-ish (it's all relative) 6-24X50 bushnell on fleabay well before Christmas & it finally turned up. I'll attach a couple of pics but basically the 50mm diameter is a bit big & touches off the iron sight bay (sorry don't know the real terminology). The simple question is; do I need different mounts or should I shove something like strips of bicycle inner tubes in the mounts to raise it slightly? Would this effect the accuracy or would it zero for me? I've considered shoving the rear mount forward but this may push the eyepiece too far back.

I know the x24 is probably a bit overkill....

    Advice &tips welcome.

move the mounts forward if you can and see how the eye piece is for you, get higher mounts or file down the rear iron sight.

As said play around with moving the mounts back a forth, and if that fails get medium mounts for it that will take 50mm scope.
Don't think you should file the rear sight the 452 has an excellent iron sight on it and would be a shame to damage it.

Serious mag their for a .22 lad;)

Thanks for that lads. Get the point about filing the sight but would rather not for the sake of a few bob? Admittedly, I'll probably never use it!

Re mag-overkill alright but was watching out for ages & nothing came up so it's a bit of a compromise. I'll probably end up with a bigger rifle at some stage& this will get me going on it. Just can't afford high end gear!

As long as she holds zero and you can see out of it it's fine. Some lads I no have ridiculous money spent and still can't hit sh#t, doesn't matter how far or clear you can see if the man can't hit his mark.
    Happy shooting lad.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you might want to check the sellers return policy because i think them scopes are fake

They've been floating around a few years now and i'm nearly certain bushnell never made a 6-24x50 besides the elite model which is a lot more expensive

Ahhhh -too good to be true! I'll check that out-was wondering why that model never showed up on their site.

I'm probably stuck with it for a while anyhow so will give it a try.

where's the easiest place to get a pair om medium mounts? I tried moving it forward but that's a no-go.

Just said i'd let you know, but to be fair a lot of different brand scopes come from the same factories and that one is prob the exact same as some other real brand name ones so will probably work the finest anyway especially on a .22, intershoot have an ebay shop and sell sportsmatch mounts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭An truicear tochasach

Yeah-not sweating too much about it as long as it holds its zero- is sportsmatch a particularly compatable brand or will any brand such as Hawke do the job? Also-I looked at intershoot but how do I know if the height of my existing mounts are small or medium?

    Thanks again.

    http://www.sportsmatch-uk.com/products
The sportsmatch website gives measurements here when u click into them, for example the low ones are 13mm from the bottom of the base of the mount to the bottom of the ring

I was never able to remove the rear sight base on my cz when I had it so I took a file to it as suggested and ground it down as much as possible before touching it up with black enamel paint, the rifle was cut back to 16" so rear sight was useless then anyway.

Do as a lot of other people do and just grind off the rear sight. You'll not miss it.
The scope is a fake but sure if it works your good to go.

Try to keep that scope as LOW as possible. Your stock is made for iron sights, it is low where your cheek will rest, and therefore you need to keep the scope low to stop your head floating about,
ie. you don't have a good cheek weld on the stock when talking the shot and looking through the scope.

+1, i have one of them as well that I picked up in China last year and it is definitely a fake. Is pretty good quality though, holds 0 well and is pretty clear in normal conditions.

Thanks for the advice-just a bit reluctant to do what I cant undo-ie file down rear sight-particularly for a cheapo Chinese knock off. My other half is in agreement though-i realise that I'll probably never neef it!

Just throwing this out there, but if bought through E-bay and PayPal you have a dispute process you can go through. If the seller misrepresented the item or sold a fake it's not what you thought you were buying so you can lodge a claim and recover your money.

Grind the rear mount down using a lapping bar or any bar that's similar to the scopes diameter. Use valve grinding paste!

Lap both mounts but concentrate on the rear, this will lift the front of the scope slightly.

Alternatively or in conjunction with the above! you might consider bedding the scope with a repair putty!
Make three spacer out differing thickness of electrical Tape and cut them to a small size 3x3mm and stick them into the ground mount. Trial fit your scope to see if it now misses the iron sight! If so then apply release agent to your scope, shoe polish works! Set scope into mount on bed of plastic putty and only finger tighten down, cleasn excessive putty! Stand for 24hrs.
    Re tighten to full spec!

Alternatively. If it's on 3/8" or 11mm dove tail then you could shim the flat underside of the mounts with a spacer! This stops the pulling down thereby keeping front mount high!!
Excessive shim will cause alignment issues between both mounts but a small bedding job will sort it in an hour!

Not sure how close to iron work your running but hopes this helps.

Thanks-been up the walls the past week. Ended up getting high mounts but haven't had a chance to zero it yep. Tried doing it in a prone position but was getting large groups-going to clamp it down somehow to eliminate the possibility that Im shaking the rifle all over the place. If its the scope not holding zero- I'll send it back.
