Computers have been around Quite a while now and most Irish people own one, However some people do not have one.I know a Doctor who has no Computer in his office and two of my friends do not have computers either.does it sound strange to you that somebody in Ireland doesn't own a computer in this day and age ?

Not really, some people just missed the whole PC revolution & opted to stay blissfully in the era they were accustomed to...

Personally, I'd be fookd without my PC's / broadband / smart-phone etc.

I doubt it. If you're not managing your time productively now, you'd just be passively absorbing some other entertainment.

yes, normally the older generation though Seem to know many 50+ without comps.

I know 57 year old, who just got one, is terrified to anything more than skype on it.
Tried to download a game for him he freaked out. "No, No, I don't want it anymore, Don't know what it'll do the computer, I may not know how to use it"

I was right there to show him, and patiently, but he wasn't having it \=.

What I really don't get, is the odd younger gen being afraid of computers/not knowing the basics. \=

em it sounds to me more than strange,l i do appreciate a day off and away from my gadgets but i think there is no way in hell i would be able to live without my computer now. i mean just think of all the work we finish using a PC, to be honest I think i wouldn't be able to live without one, how would i set up a home cinema without one

what about you MRnotlob606?? could you get rid of yours now?

agreed, if you would like to see how much time you spend or better say waste, just keep a time track, you can even use excel for it, start with the time you get up till the time you go to bed, (8:00 am, 8:30 am and so on) and write in detail what you did not just like i was on facebook, go in details so you find out where you spend the time so you can correct it, worked for me :cool:

well when im not on a computer im normally just reading a book or out with friends,It does feel quite alienating without a computer, I dont think my friends are too bothered about getting a computer,never asked them why they dont have one certainly isn't for financial reasons

No tv or TV licence in this house, never was since we came here 30 years ago. Not the same thing, but perhaps not all that different either. The interweb has eroded the charm though.
House quiet atm, all gone off to the library for a stash of paper Christmas books.

I was given a second hand dell laptop about five years ago. Still the one I use today. If I hadn't been given a computer, I wouldn't have bought one. As I'll never have to type another essay again, I'm not sure I'd bother replacing this one when it goes kaboom. They're handy, but they're not necessary. Take this post here for example. I'm having a coffee while waiting for somebody. I'm killing time on boards. If I was at home, I wouldn't be online. The small bit of internettin' I do is generally done on the phone while out and about.

well i know the feeling, i did try a few days without my android phone and i took my mothers old phone (i just can't tell you which phone i am too ashamed lol)
it felt kind of strange at first but then i started to think what if i get an urgent email from my employers, i can do without my computer no problem but not longer than day, i think your friends enjoy the free time too much to have it taken away by machines:pac:

what is a tv xD omg i just remembered i have one, i can't remember the last time I sat down to watch a show on tv i use my computers for everything, but i do read books though, the last thing i read was what most successful people do before breakfast by Laura Vanderkam. i think what you do is respectable and we should all do more reading

It took me years to convince my mum to get one. She always said she wouldn't know how to work one but I kept saying if you can work a mobile you will be able to work it too. Eventually she gave in and bought a cheap netbook I picked for her to start with. That was about 2 years ago and now she's never off it. She even went to a wee class at her community house to learn even more of the basics. Her netbook got broke and she was on the phone saying how hard it was without it for things like even checking her bank and paying bills and this time she wanted me to pick her out a decent notebook.

I think for anyone say under 40, it's a bit strange for me if they don't have a computer. I am a complete and utter nerd and hate even being offline for a few hours and while I understand that other people aren't nearly as bad as me I just don't know what people do with their time if they don't have the Internet.

The whole buying a laptop and skipping the broadband thing reminded me of y friends house, they have broadband but no computer and use the broadband on their phones, they borrow a laptop every now and then but that's it, I find it very strange.

You need computers for even basic things now, my folks are getting more and more frustrsted that they have to rely on me to do things for them online, like pay bills or book holidays. They realise doing it old school is costing them money
My Dad has even started an Internet course!

He's Liam Gallagher. He's probably doesn't use Twitter because he can't read and write much. We can only be grateful to be spared his delusional ramblings anyway.

That is all fine and good for simple things but not everything is accessible with mobile or that mobile doesn't contain the feature a computer packs.. I agree mobile is handy but sometimes one just need to go with pc
