Article is too long, didn't read. However I can give you a males perspective which is much better. Barbie is a sexy bit of ass and a dab hand in the kitchen ;)

Omg, completely forgot about that episode. It hasn't been on Rte/channel 4/sky in a long time. That's another thing, what's with those channels rotating the same series of the Simpsons over and over. That lurlene episode has been on Rte 2 about 40 times in the last year but no sign of Lisa lion heart. Or that other episode where Bart swaps tests with Martin and goes to the genius school.

Homer: how was your day Bart
    Bart: os-os
    Homer: huh
    Bart: it's backwards for so-so
    Homer: wow!

I don't think barbies are evil. I'm not sure that toys can be evil. Although that movie with buzz lightyear and the cowboy would make you think otherwise.

I never got barbies though, or dolls in general. Didn't really see the point.

Have you seen the 3rd cowboy and spaceman movie? The purple bear was a right bastard

Yes, there were many many tears!

    She's not the devil.

She is one of the many, many things wrong with the stuff we choose to teach our children though.

Lots of bastardness too, mainly from the purple bear. That clapping monkey thing was a prick too. So yes, toys can be evil bastards

Jeez, I feel sorry for that woman's kid. But her the doll and get over yourself, I'd tell her. I had an Action Man growing up and it never did me a bit of harm. I haven't killed anyone in years!

I was never able to achieve my dream of having the same body as my toys. Eventually I just had to learn to accept that I would never be a robot that could transform into a car.

I don't see the issue, or maybe I just don't think like her. If I had a daughter, or son actually, that wanted a Barbie I would get it for them. It would be my job to make sure they knew she was unrealistic looking.

If I had a daughter I wouldn't want Barbie around to teach her that the ideal way to look is like a brain dead junior hooker on the night of a rugby international.

She doesn't offend me but there are much better toys out there for kids. Like Lego. Get her Lego. Lego is great. All kids love Lego.

I hated dolls when I was a child. I used to pull their heads off and cut off their hair so they just had bristles sticking out of their heads. People didn't get the message and kept buying them for me anyway:( I was an odd child:D

What was the point of the Ken doll? Did he have a bionic eye? Did he have a power punch action? Did he have eagle eyes?

Why would Barbie marry Ken when Action Man was available?

Was Barbie in a secret lesbo affair with Sindy and using Ken as a beard?

Barbie is the personification of superficiality. A doll that is shallow and teaches little girls that nothing is more important then what is perceived to be beauty. But even then, I would say that is Barbie were real she'd be phony as f*ck, with fake breasts and botox injections or plastic surgery. But I believe Barbie exposes that insecurity in women, and sends the wrong message. But of course a little girl probably wouldn't realize it at the time. All she cares about it how cool her doll is, and what accessories she wants for it.

But is Barbie evil? No. Just a bad role model.

I played with Barbie as a kid. Barbie was just a lump of plastic I played with and acted out scenes that I would've liked to have experienced and it wasn't all princesses and sexy firewoman etc. It was all very innocent (except for the extreme kissy face with Ken of the skin-coloured boxers...although Paul was hotter). It was all very innocent stuff. Speaking even as a militant Feminazi, I couldn't finish that article. I think she's overreacting tbh.

Amazing how no one ever gives out about action man with his abs, muscles etc. Does he not represent the male version of barbie?

My daughter's face may fall when she rips off the Christmas paper expecting to see Barbie smiling back at her, but maybe one day, like me, she will realise that Lottie makes for a far better friend.

and this is imo what makes her a terrible parent,

she would rather upset her child at christmas to further her agenda than give her child the christmas toy they have asked santa for.

i cannot stand parents who live through their child, let them be children ffs they will be grown up soon enough direct them and parent them to make the right choices for themselves and then maybe they won't grow up to be a barbie.

going by her argument my husband should be trying to make his body resemble a lego brick....

Barbie dolls aren't evil, they are just a lump of plastic. However they are one of the first manifestations of the constant pressure put on females to base their self-esteem on ideals of beauty.

No, a terrible parent fails to feed their child, fails to nurture them, berates, hits, and otherwise abuses their child.
she would rather upset her child at christmas to further her agenda than give her child the christmas toy they have asked santa for.

No, she's not furthering her agenda. She's weighing up the short-term benefits of gratification vs. the long-term consequences for her childs character. If we gave our children what they asked for, our daughter Sadhbh would be getting a magical necklace that she can whisper to to make people do what she wants, and will allow her to fly should the house go on fire. My seven-year-old son would be getting a Playstation, Xbox, and a mobile phone.

Just this afternoon Sadhbh was at a Christmas party and all the children received Christmas annuals. My daughter, being four, received one labelled "Girl, 2-4" and was immediately upset because she decided it was too babyish. She declared she didn't want it even before she had upwrapped it. Two hours later she was sitting at the kitchen table doing puzzles in it, and we read a story from it for bedtime.
i cannot stand parents who live through their child, let them be children ffs they will be grown up soon enough direct them and parent them to make the right choices for themselves and then maybe they won't grow up to be a barbie.

I cannot stand parents who are ruled by their child, let them be parents and make decisions that they feel are best for their children.
going by her argument my husband should be trying to make his body resemble a lego brick....

That's so ridiculously glib, I hardly know where to start. The primary way children play with Lego is through building and creating, and allowing the characters to interact with the environment the child has made. Barbie is predominantly about dressing and grooming the doll, with the emphasis on beauty and appearance. Interactive play with the dolls in limited by the fact they can barely even stand up without being held, with the child having to hold them. Lego encourages children to imagine what they can do, Barbie encourages child to imagine how they can look.

I don't find Barbie to be the Devil. I believe the culture that pushes forth unhealthy or unrealistic expectations of beauty is the greater problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭SparkySpitfire

Some people need to teach their children values themselves and not leave it up to toys to show them all they can be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,821 ✭✭✭fussyonion

It annoys the hell out of me that some parents think Barbie is "inappropriate".
It's a bloody doll, for God sake.

I had Barbies growing up because I wanted them and they were all the go.
Parents bought them for their daughters because they made them HAPPY, they had hours and hours of fun with them and that's all it is..FUN.

People are so bloody PC these days.

I had Barbies too - loved them. I can understand though, that writer questioning the way every Barbie is all pink and glittery and stiletto-wearing, even the ones that are firefighting and the like.

My fave Barbie I had as a kid, was this one - her outfit was office-wear for the day, and then you could turn it inside out to become a cocktail dress. It was the biz!
