I have a licence for a 223 for foxing. I have been told that it is possible to get a deer licence with this gun if shooting above 55 grain bullets. But it is also possible to get 75grains. Just wondering has anyone got a deer licence with there 223 and if so was it a hard process ? Advice please

No you can't get a Deer Licence for a .223 no matter what Grain your throwing out of it.

It's been done to death here actually, if you have some spare time use the search function and watch the train wreck unfold infront of you, a good laugh though :D

The law is .22 or above with a grain weight of 55 grains or more but it must produce 1700ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle.

    Key part.

It must meet all three criteria mentioned by Juice including the muzzle energy. The .223 only meets this energy using some form of Magnum, WSSM, etc of the .223. Easier to get a deer legal caliber.

Mabe it is a case of funds or the hassel of getting a new licence issued but I have heard this type of question time and again. I have seen an upsurge locally, in fans in deer hunting circles, of the use of.22"swift. I dont understand it. In the late 70's and 80's ect all you could get a licence for was a .22 cal rifle and the hunting faternity fought long and hard to get the bigger calibers back for deer hunting.

I know of two people last season that applied for Deer licenses last year with .223 rifles, both were granted. This season the same two people applied one was granted and one was not.

If they were issued then they stand moot. Meaning if they shot a deer, even with a license, they are breaking the law.

The NPWS issue licenses, but cannot change legislation which states .22 centrefire, minimum 55gr bullet, and minimum 1,700 ft/lb at the muzzle. As the .223 cannot make this then it breaks the law. So i'd be careful about telling people that your friends shot all year on a invlaid/illegal license, and that one is shooting this year on the same invalid/illegal license.

It's the same scenario as having an unrestricted license for a restricted gun. It might be issued but does not stand as valid.

If you read my post i stated that the NPWS had/have issued Deer licenses for .223 calibre rifles. I did not mention that either of the license holders had shot Deer.

If you read my post i stated that the licenses were issued, i did not mention that any Deer were shot using a calibre that i believe is not legal to shoot them with.
And if you read mine you'd see i said if they shot any deer.

The rest of my post was a cautionary note as we've had lads on before bragging (however true or not) about people shooting deer with improper licenses/caliber rifles.

Did they submit a return for last season shoot Deer when applying for this seasons Licence?

If they put down that they shot Deer with a .223 they are as bright as they sound, applying for a Licence with Calibre that does not meet requirements is their own fault, the NPWS will just palm all blame back onto them and ignorance is not a legal defence
If you read my post i stated that the NPWS had/have issued Deer licenses for .223 calibre rifles. I did not mention that either of the license holders had shot Deer.

Why would "your friends" apply for a Deer Licence without wanting to go out and shoot Deer in the first place?

OP, you might not have to search for the Train Wrecks of other Threads after all, one might be unravelling right before your eyes :D
