I can't survive on £500 a week benefits

A single mother with eight children who receives £2,000 a month in state handouts has complained she is struggling to make ends meet.
Marie Buchan, 31, whose children range in age from 12 to two months, lives in a three-bedroom housing association house in Selly Oak, Birmingham, but says it's not big enough and has applied for a bigger one.
And she says her benefits payments, which were reduced from £582 a week to £500 a week in September after the government introduced a cap on handouts, are not enough for her family to survive on

    Are you for real?
    £500 for nine people?
That averages out at £55 per person per week.

I couldn't live on £55 per week. No chance.
Well, maybe as a one-off I could, with no rent or bills to pay out of that.

In fairness maybe she shouldn't have had a **** load of children, if she wasnt going to support them herself, but instead rely on state handouts.

She does have them, they're here, and they're real, innocent children, so they need to be taken care of. Maybe even educated so they don't end up in the same unfortunate situation their mother is in.

What would you do, feck the whole lot of them out to fend for themselves?

What a disgusting post that is.

I don't know what's worse sometimes - articles printed in the Daily Mail, the people that comment on them, or some of the people that post here.

And how much is she getting from the dad(s)?

Having one "accident" isn't the worst thing, having two is pretty bad luck, but having eight??? By the age of 32?

I envy a single Mum who lives in a shoe
with so many kids she didn't know what to do
down to the social for buggies galore
    selling them for profit door-to-door.

No and it's ridiculius to suggest I am saying the kids should be kicked out on the streets to fend for themselves.

But isn't that the attitude that lets a lot of benefit scroungers away with this?

"Well, if I just have the kids they can't let me and them starve".

The point was though, that saying "I don't get that much per month" (and this often is what these grievances boil down to rather than actually caring about society and where taxpayers' money in general is going) is moot unless the person saying it has eight kids.

Yes, she's stupid, careless and irresponsible for having eight children (ditto the father) and having to be relying solely on benefits to raise them. One or two children in such circumstances - these things happen, and happen to lots of responsible people, but eight is miles too far.
However, those eight children are here - pointless saying she shouldn't have had them when that can't be undone now - and they need to be provided for. They are the important ones here and aren't to blame for their parents' irresponsibility.

The Daily Mail only interviewed her and only published it to rabble-rouse and **** with people's heads and demonise honest, decent single mothers/people on welfare (i.e. the majority).

Something I don't get about the Daily Mail....
People on here keep saying it's full of crap - am not disagreeing :P Clearly the daily mail love being sensationalist. But to what level of crap? Like there is a face to this story... a name ...

Do they just blow stories out? like reality is this woman could be on £300 but thats not going to anger readers so blow it up to £500?
Or, as crazy as it sounds, it's not really Marie Buchan 31 but Sarah Jones, 33, aspiring hairdresser from east essex with her children whilst husband/daddy is off camera :pac:

Or she is just some woman who honestly wants more money from the goverment and thinks by going to the mail it will help her?! I honestly don't know. lol. I just keep reading how the daily mail is full of crap on here.

Well, maybe as a one-off I could, with no rent or bills to pay out of that.

She had 8 kids over the course of 12 years... whether a person in her position has enough in £2000 per month is neither here nor there when you think about it. How much would be enough, and should the state be expected to provide whatever it is?

It's self-entitled bullshit.. she can either afford to look after 8 kids with what she has, or should be deemed unfit to care for so many.

    Wow. Charming.

Would it ever occur to you that maybe she's not as well educated or well rounded as you are? Maybe she didn't have the type of upbringing that instilled more self-worth into her. That maybe she doesn't know any better, and attitudes like yours will never stop the vicious cycle that she's in?

You don't know this woman's situation. How do you know she's not recently widowed by a well paid family man? I don't know her situation either but that's my point. It's immediately *rabble rabble rabble* how many fathers? *rabble rabble rabble* free house *rabble rabble rabble* state scrounger

I wonder would the hard line, right wingers of AH be quite so acid tongued if they met this woman, seen her kids or witnessed her situation? Or god forbid; checked facts before condemning this "ungrateful kunt" (sic)

That's not the point. I work hard for my money, whether I have kids or not. She does fcuk all and gets £500 a week and is complaining about it!!

It is the complaining that pisses me off, she should be happy with what she gets.

Amazed her hotness hasn't been commented on; that's usually deemed the most important element of these stories. After Hours, what's going on...?! :pac:

Oh wait, the likely state of her fanny has been mentioned a couple of times. Balance restored.
    It's self-entitled bullshit
Not gonna argue with that, but moreso in relation to her own attitude - the kids do need to be provided for.
she can either afford to look after 8 kids with what she has...
Don't know whether the €55 per person is enough each week - I guess it depends on needs of the individual. I assume it would be enough for a child some weeks though?

The nonsense posts on this thread are killing me, look anyone having up to 16 kids on welfare is fine & should get all the support that taxpayers can give, regardless of their views.

17 kids on welfare, now THAT is taking the p!ss.. but anything up to 16, fine.

Jeez... it's not an impossibility (although I don't know about "plenty" more children) but it's also likely he just had eight children with her and that's it.

It would hardly be difficult for nine people to survive on 2k a month would it? Ffs.

75% of the clothes can be hand me downs.
    Porridge for everyone at breakfast.
Bag a spuds and turnips will do for dinners.
    Beans on toast for supper.
    Snack on eggs.

Guaranteed her money is going on 56 take aways a week and lord know how many cigarettes between the lot of em.

Seriously you'd feel like screaming Duuuuuurh?! at these people.

I really dont want to get into this but when I was living in the UK I was getting in around £1500 a month (take home) and I struggled from time to time. Rent, bills, food, transport, coke, hookers. Fairness though I cant handle money. Basics in the UK can be expensive and not as cheap as people think.

Anyone have a rough estimate on what a single mother in Ireland would get per month for 8 kids?

Can see why people are angry. Comments are classic.

The "don't have kids you can't afford" argument is as low as it gets.

Yes the parent/s should have been more careful if they can't afford more children, however that isn't the fault of any child and I for one hate the thought of any child having to go hungry, or go out without proper clothing or footwear.

So lets me get right she's on 500pw and can't afford to live on it for doing absolutely nothing other than popping out babies ,
So £62.50 per person pw ,
She's certainly able to afford to hair done regularly by the looks of it and none of the family look malnourished or like there wearing rags either ,

If I can feed a family of 4 on less than €50 pw I'm pretty sure this woman can afford her rent and pay her driving fines on £ 500 pw
