    http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/1129/489854-body-phoenix-park/

Gardaí say a man who died in the early hours of today in an area of the Phoenix Park frequented by homeless people suffered catastrophic burn injuries.
The victim who was found at around 1am has still not been identified and Gardaí say they will have to rely on DNA and dental records.
He was in a sleeping bag which had caught fire in a wooded area near the Wellington Monument in the park.
The fire was noticed by Gardaí in a passing patrol car who went to the scene but the victim had sustained fatal injuries.
Gardaí say there appears to have been a homeless community living in the area where the man died.
A post mortem to establish whether the cause of death was accidental or deliberate is continuing this evening.
Gardaí have issued an appeal to anyone who frequents the area or anyone with information to contact them at Cabra Garda Station on 01-6667400.
They are also liaising with agencies that deal with homeless people.

It would seem that he was a homeless man bunking in the Phoenix park for the night. Horrific way to die. Cause of the fire has yet to be determined But it very could well have been murder.

Heard this on the radio earlier and it really got me. Sad and gruesome. What an awful way to die. RIP

It could very well have been a dropped cigarette either. Or spontaneous combustion. Horrible way to die, and my sympathies to the man (and his family, if any), but it's a bit sensationalist to leap to "murder" before there's even been an investigation.

Will this get more replies than a horse being burnt to death ?

It's appalling the level of homelessness out there and in my view highlights an uncaring aspect of society. There is no need for anyone to sleep rough.

See that word "Could" - it's a beautiful word.
I simply said it "could" have been. In the same context as you proceeded to say "could" have been a cigarette :)

    That's crazy isn't it? :pac:
You quoted me saying not to say could have been, then you say could have been :pac:

Pretty sad to hear so close to Christmas ,

Kinda hope the person didn't leave a family behind ,

But as well all know he probably won't be the only homeless person to pass away in cities around the country in the coming weeks/ months

Horrific death. Was anyone charged with the murder of the homeless woman in the Phoenix park last year? Seems too much of coincidence to me

If it was an accident caused by a dropped cigarette while unconscious at least they wouldn't have suffered.

The Indo are reporting that the Gardai are treating it as murder. But... it's the Indo, so that may or may not be accurate.

Is it possible for any sleeping bag made in the past 20 years to go on fire without an accelerant being used?

It would be hard for that to be the case, since it doesn't exist.

Well, they have to until they have evidence to the contrary.

    It's a matter of course.

Its insane that we still have people sleeping rough in such an affluent country.

Following the post mortem, they've launched a murder investigation.

I do hope that the poor mans body found in the Phoenix park gets as much publicity and media attention as the horse unfortunate death did.

Posted this in the meltdown thread earlier. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057093610

Few Pyromaniac killers in Dublin between this and the poor horse. Bloody terrifying thought

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,127 ✭✭✭✭kerry4sam

Not entirely sure why but hearing about homeless people tend to kinda freak me out a lickle. I just don't fully understand how anyone could see no alternative in Ireland in 2013. I've alot yet to learn I know!

Now hearing about it being a Murder Investigation - how could anyone do something like that?! That person was already struggling with some aspects of societal life; how they could not be just left alone without being mis-treated in any way or even murdered is just, it's just not right! It just freaks me out that their are people out there capable of ending another life, never mind ending this life of a homeless person who was already fighting a personal battle or two.

I have a lot to learn so I do, as being able to murder a homeless person is something I just do not understand.

Hope that their are no family left behind after this tragedy, but if their are, then I hope they find Peace within themselves some time.

Still sick pyromaniac bastards......how did the horse die exactly?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

I remember a few years ago on crimeline, they had CCTV pointed at this man asleep at the front of a shop on O' Connell street, and it showed two scumbags squirt a canister of lighter fuel on his legs and set him on fire. These bastards will go all the way, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was murder in my opinion.

The poor guy what a horrible way to die. To those saying no one should be sleeping rough in Ireland it's sometimes the case that people choose to sleep outside where they can be alone or use what they want. Curfew doesn't suit many either.

Can we have some kind of kill by fire = get executed by fire law please.

The unfortunate man was homeless, A small minority of people who are homeless sleep rough, but most stay in emergency accommodation such as a hostel or night shelter, B&B, with family and friends, or in a squat. All of these are very stressful and short-term arrangements. In some of them only essential living necessities are available; in others not even basic needs are being met. None of them is a place to call home.It is difficult to know the exact number of people experiencing homelessness in Ireland, due to its transient nature and hidden homelessness (for example, people ‘sofa surfing’ or squatting). Focus Ireland estimates that there are up to 5,000 people at any one time who are homeless in Ireland.

Agreed, any mention of that horse in this thread is majorly disrespectful to the poor cratur that died.

For a better idea about homelessness and why people sleep rough, this is a good (albeit very depressing) article - it's from New York but just as applicable in many respects:
    http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/oct/13/homeless-nyc-people-you-meet

It's sick that someone could be murdered like this - targeting a vulnerable/homeless person while asleep (can't see how that would be anything other than unprovoked).

As if being homeless itself isn't bad enough, this will be running through the psyche of other homeless people now (particularly those sleeping rough...), knowing that there are people out there who dehumanize homeless people so much, that they would do something as fúcked up as this.

I would think there is a high chance that another homeless person might have done this no? There was a community of them there. It might not have been a passing scummer as some are suggesting. High incidence of mental illness in the homeless population and plenty of sbstance abuse too (not all of course but a raised fraction maybe).

Hang on, it's extremely rare for mental illness to cause someone to murder or inflict any abuse, for that matter. Certainly a way smaller likelihood than plain old anger or hatred.

Have a read of http://www.seechange.ie/ . There's still a lot of unfounded prejudice against the mentally ill out there.

I was at a court case a good few years ago and two men in there 40's/50's who were drinking in an abandoned house. One of the men got into a fight with the other and killed him with a wine bottle. He then set his body on fire.

I thought of that immediately when i heard about this case. Obviously it could be a totally different scenario but it goes to show these things happen.

A terrible way to die, I can't begin to imagine it.

I'd liken it to notoriously gruesome Mafia hits such as Tony 'the Ant' Spilotro grinding Billy M'Carthys head in a vice or John Gotti severing John Favara's still alive body with a chainsaw. (Favara had accidently run over and killed Gotti's 12 year old son Frankie in 1980.)

I cannot fathom out the mindset of anyone who would do something like this.
As someone who is absolutely opposed to the death penalty, after reading about this case I can sympathise with those who call for it!
