Another decent week, with just over 35 miles run. Glutes and piriformis are still loosening out slowly and require daily stretching to keep me on the road.

Monday: had planned a 40 minute progression but I was all over the place on this run and it ended up more of a pic&mix than progression: 5 miles (8.24, 7.49, 7.17, 7.35, & 8.21)

Tue: 20 min easy NHS with the dog

Wed: wu/cd 2x1 mile @ 7.00 min pace off 3 mins, 2x800m @6.50 off 2 min, 2x400m @6.40 off 1 min. Was very wet and windy all day and I was considering putting this off till the next day but I managed to get out in what seemed like a break in the worst of the weather. Started jogging from the house towards the local pitch, glanced down at the watch and noticed the pace was in mph but the distance was in km. ffs. Stopped and attempted to sort it and got going again, quick look at the watch and I’d made it worse! Stopped again and spent what felt like ages in the wind and rain trying to set it up properly. Got going again but was a bit cold at this stage. The pitch was a bit swampy, mucky and slippery but I ploughed on with the faster stuff however I was cornering like a pissed pig on an ice rink :) Despite the conditions I managed it fairly well and got nearly 8 miles done in total.
    6.56/6.57/6.46/6.45/6.37/6.31

Thur: body was a little tired after the session so only managed 20 mins very very easy

Fri: back with my work buddy for our 10k trot, was still feeling a bit tired but he dragged me around @ 8.00 pace

Sat: plan was for 30 mins with strides. Crappy weather and was in foul humour just plodded along for 5 miles @ 8.42 pace trying to run with decent form but didn’t do the strides.

Sun. Plan was for 2 x (400m:800:400) @ 6.30 pace off 1 minute, 4 min jog between sets. Looked like a piece of piss on paper and I thought I’d manage it handy enough. Was up early to walk the dog and the plan was to do it directly after but I got so wet on the walk that I just dried off and went back to bed for another 3 hours kip!!! Got out with a belly full of brunch in a bit of watery sunlight, and jogged up to the pitch. Found this one of the harder sessions to date (not sure if it was cumulative fatigue) but I expected to be able to manage 6.30 pace far easier than I did. That session managed my expectations around a sub 20 5k, lots of work to do before I hit that milestone and get on with the other plans in my head.

Another good week in the bank with a number of firsts since God was a boy or at least since I was crisscrossing Europe on my failed sub 3 Crusade!

I ran just over 44 miles for the week
    22nd straight day running.
    LR of over 10 miles
    I used Body Glide 😀

Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri & Sat we all easy miles of 5 miles or thereabouts. Just took them handy and tried to run with decent form.

Wed: jogged up to the pitch for 8 x 400m @ 6.30 pace. It was very windy and I didn’t hang around once I got to the pitch just got straight into it. Found it hard to keep the pace consistent as on one side of the pitch I was flying along like a caped superhero and on the other I was pudding along like a sumo wrestler in diving gear! Ended up doing an extra rep coz I can’t count :(

Happy with the way this went, paces:

    6.20, 6.18, 6.26, 6.28, 6.24, 6.28, 6.36, 6.28, 6.25

Sun: I had an Epsom salt bath on Saturday night and was feeling reasonably good so I decided to try a “long run”. Beautiful day for it and I parked up at the bottom of Seanadh Pheistin and started trundling up the first hill. Used to be decent on rolling hills but every hill seemed to have me running in treacle. Had it in my head to do 90 mins easy, hoping to hit 10 miles and after a couple of miles in I started to feel better and even on the turn with the breeze again me I was managing to sustain the pace. Upped the gears for the last two mainly downhill miles and finished them with decent pace.

    11 miles @ 8.12

    Splits: 8.30,8.38,8.12,8.27,8.33,8.04,7.53,8.25,8.27,7.43,& 7.20.

Very happy with that week and on the run today I was thinking if I can run 11 miles I can train the body to run 20 and if I can run 20 surely I can train the body to...

Any way before I get carried away with deluded notions I’m still stuck trying to crack my first target of a sub 20 5k!!!

    Hopefully it’ll come soon.

All good here. Laughing at joggers as I whizz past on two wheels!!

Mixing up the cycling with a bit of running over the winter. Nothing major 10k or so once or twice a week.

Haven’t ran a marathon since London ‘17 (Which I didn’t really bother training for) and I don’t really have any desire to do so.

Are you targeting anything in particular apart from a soft 5km?

Decided to take the weekly mileage down a bit from last weeks “high”.

Got 34 miles done over the week and I’ve run for 29 consecutive days, if I live till I’m 105 and run every day I might challenge Ron Hills consecutive days running record :)

Mon: 3 miles very easy HNS
Tue: 4 miles monotonous around the pitch but I need to run more on the grass as the last few weeks I’ve done more mileage on the road
Wed: wu/cd with 5 x 800m @ 6.30 pace off 90 seconds. Jogged up to the pitch for this, it was still fairly swampy from the recent deluges but I just got straight into it. Tough enough little session and the last one had me reaching a bit.

    Rep paces: 6.23, 6.27, 6.30, 6.25 & 6.24

Jogged home happy enough to have it done.

Thur: 3 mile very easy plod with the dog, had a little scare when I went over on the ankle but luckily enough it didn’t sell up after I iced it.

Fri: 4 mile easy plod, pace just enough to get the blood pumping through auld man veins

Sat: didn’t get up till 12 :) and was a little caught for time as I wanted to watch the Stoke game on a stream. Very hard to run out here after dark as there are no street lights and the roads are dangerous. Daughter asked me (unbelievably:)) if I wanted to go out for a run before the game so a quick change and off we went nice and easy chatting along the way. 5 handy miles.

Sun: 8 miles with 3 miles tempo. Got roped in to put up the Christmas tree and decorations so it was almost 3pm by the time I got out. Was a bit misty so wore hi viz just to be careful. Felt very lethargic at the start of this but got into it ok. The drop in pace for the tempo was a shock to the system and the body and lungs struggled for a couple of minutes to acclimatise.

    Got the 3 miles done @ 6.59, 6.58, & 6.57.

Hoping to get back to some cross training next week

Another half decent week done and dusted but I’m bloody itchin for a race now. Want to see how close I am to sub 20 5k.

Mon: body a bit stiff, just some easy miles, 4.

    Tue: more easy miles, 6.

Wed: back to one on one boxing session. Really enjoyed these and I haven’t been back since March so was a bit apprehensive as to how the body would hold up. Did a warm up and some core and then into some bag work, both punching and kicking. Couldn’t recommend this highly enough, great for fitness and getting rid of pent up stress :) We then moved on to some sparring. He usually moves around the ring just flicking away and dodging my punches. Given my recent running training and electric speed I, for once, managed to manoeuvre him into a corner and was getting off some decent shots when he flicked out a jab that bounced off my cheek.

I came to a complete stop with my hand on my hip, eyes welling up with water, lip trembling and gave him my shocked “you can’t do that look”. He just danced out of the corner and shouted, “keep you fcukin hands up”! Was a lot more careful after that and decided it’s better to stick with elite running as pro boxing probably isn’t for me :)

Drove to Dangan straight after and got 3 easy miles done.

Thur: didn’t think I’d be in any shape to do a session after yesterday’s exertions but body felt reasonably ok so I got out around the pitches in Dangan.

    Plan was 2 x 1k @ 6.40 off 90 secs, 2 x 800m @ 6.30 off 60 seconds and 2 x 400m @ 6.20 off 30 seconds.

Very happy with the way this went, rep paces:

    6.38, 6.33; 6.23, 6.25; 6.19, & 6.05.

Fri: felt a bit stiff and wasn’t feeling the love at all, really really didn’t want to go out but wanted to keep the consistency and routine going so got 3 miles easy done.

Sat: got another 5 miles easy done with my daughter before settling down to watch Stoke best Middlesbrough to go 5th!

Sun: body still a bit tight, had planned some faster stuff but wasn’t sure if I was up to it. Decided to jog up to the pitch and if I felt up to it, do 5 x 400m @ sub 6 min pace off 75 seconds.

Beautiful crisp day and once I got to the pitch I didn’t give myself the option to back out just got straight into it, rep paces were:

    5.48, 5.50, 5.49, 5.50 & 5.55

    33 miles for the week.

Terry Conroy famous Stoke and Irish player from Dublin used to know my Dad. I’ve been supporting them since I was a boy.

Have 3 season tickets and if the kids are bold I punish them by bringing them to a match :)

Same as that C, our man loves going to the games. He was super excited at start of season as he thought he was going to see Arjen Robben play for Groningen, of course Robben ended up injured for the match!!!

    I’ll wear a mankini if I get there :)

I’ve a cunning/stupid/deluded plan if it all comes together!

Love Spanish marathons so if I do get to do another one it’ll probably be there.

Trying to see if I can slowly build up the LR, longest is only 11 miles and hoping to have that up to 15 by end of month!

Woke up on Monday with a heavy head cold and tight groin, don’t think they are interrelated but both were an issue :)

Wasn’t sure if I’d be able to run but decided to try something local and very easy. Managed a slow 5k reasonably ok but decided I’d take a step back week as I’ve been putting in a decent effort lately and the body probably needed a break.

The rest of the week saw me just doing slow 5k plods, was delighted my daughter ran 3 or 4 of these with me (we always used to end up rowing when I’d suggest she’d join me for a run, makes a nice change she’s volunteering, maybe she’s hoping that Santa goes large this year :))

On Thursday I ran for the 40th consecutive day and on Friday I did a 1 on 1 boxing session that had me in bits. Got into the car in a sweaty heap and noticed that it was very low on charge so drove to the nearest charge station, did a superman change in the car and got 5k done around UCG while the car was charging.

Hadn’t been to the physioterrorist in a while and the visit this week was a bit painful. Got the shoulders, back and glutes needled. Good news is that the back is stable but my glutes were very tight. I’m not great with needles and I nearly passed out when she showed me the size of the needle used for your arse! (See attached pic with parental advisory:))

The muscles were so tight she bent a few of those Zulu war spears!

Just over 22 miles for the week, hoping for a decent effort this week.
