Hi all. Quick question regarding shooting deer. I have a .22-250 rifle. And just looking to know what the law is regarding deer on private land/farms that I have permission to shoot on? Can I shoot them or do I need any licences?

First of all you do need a license to hunt and kill deer. You have to apply to the NPWS With letters from land owners, with a total of 100 acres of land that theres evidence of suffiant amounts of deer on land to warent being shot. Hope this helps ye. If you need a hand shooting them, send me a P.M.

As said you need a licence and you have to use 60 grain rounds to be legal on the ft/lbs side of it too.
To hunt deer you need a rifle over .22 with at least a 55gr bullet which must have 1700ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle. So for the 22.250 you would have to be using 60gr rounds.

Hi another question how did you get the 22-250 in the first place without a hunting licence or was it for fox control

22-250 for shooting Deer??? Well ok back in the 70's and 80's when one could'nt get any bigger caliber rifles it was used for Deer but today when we can get bigger caliber rifles I don't think we should be still using such unsuitable calibers. Have some respect for your Deer.

Before anyone goes off on a rant remember that 22-250 is still deer legal, and if you don't agree with that then argue your point. DON'T start dragging the thread off with insults, and accusations.

It's a legal calibre for deer so there's nothing wrong with it.
If it's well placed and drops the deer then it's fine. And showing respect for your quarry.
Like all calibre it has to be properly and humanely placed to drop it.

Put down 60 grain load on deer licence application and that will pass if the rest of your application is successful. Hope your rifle fires the 60 grain load accurately as some 22-250 rifles don't like that particular grain load. It certainly will dispatch any deer humanly in the right hands at a sensible range. All down to the man behind the rifle let it be any deer caliber

Sorry if my previous posting comes across as accusatory ect. I was making the point that the 22-250 was designed for shooting praire dogs at 300yds, not deer. The bullets are too light for deer and would not be allowed in most other countries for shooting all but the smallest species of deer. This piece of legislation that allows this round for deer shooting is only a leftover from the "temperary Firearms act" of the seventies which only allowed for .22 calibre in private posession. One could of course make the point that a .22"short at a suitable range and in the head will take deer. If it was up to me, .243 minimun for deer, period.

Laws are laws but even a 223 for example will dispatch any Irish deer if it was deer legal. Loads of calibers ability's are under estimated. An example, 223 rifles im sure killed 100's of goats nation wide and goats certainly are tougher than any deer imo. And you can be sure theres a couple of 1000 deer culled on Irish soil over the years using deer legal and ''illegal'' .22 center fire calibers. Nothing wrong on what your saying either Larry60 but I don't think my opinion is far off.
