Whatever your choice i'd recommend a 30mm tube, and large objective lens to maximize light transmission.

With that in mind look to second hand scopes. Better quality for cheaper than new price.

A .223 has very little recoil so no need to look for something rated for higher calibers. This means you can look at cheaper scopes without worrying about recoil management.

Have a look in the for sale section for a start. Something like this, or this, maybe this.

Failing that you can go new and look at Bushnell Banner, Hawke Varmint, and other such scopes. They come in at around €200 or less new, but the only "drawback" being they are 25mm tubes, and usually between 40-44mm objective lenses. Now having said that i wouldn't let that put me off. Under a lamp or during daytime hours this should not cause any problems with sight picture, etc.

Of course the answer is always to try and bump up the budget.

thanks again cass. saw a hawke sport 4x12x50 in my local gunshop, would that be sufficient do you think?

Not a bad little scope, but if you want my opinion. If you have €200 to spend, spend the €200. While cheaper scopes can be guaranteed by the manufacturers to work perfectly on any rifle, i'd be a little more trustworthy of a gun that costs more as more went into it. If that makes sense.

Another option is the Hawke Panorama EV for €200. It's a 4-12x50 too.

Hawke are among the cheapest, yet still good quality scopes. Have a check of their site, and see what catches your eye. Most dealers stock them, and as Deben supply Irish dealers any scope can be gotten within a week. Plus they have a cracking guarantee and customer service.

I was always impressed with hawke scopes but wanted a 30mm tube and you need to spend more on hawke scopes for that.
I then got the nikko sterling nighteater 30mm and imo it leave the hawke dead in the water pound for pound...

cost me 201euro to my door from this site including sunshade and flip up caps. Find it brilliant in low light and under the lamp, and has plenty of mag too.
