From those you listed, I'd go for last year's Nexus 7.

    +1. Great device.

Definitely go with the Nexus 7, got one last year, has never let me down. I know you said under 200 Euro, but the new Nexus 7 is 220/230€ in Curry's at the moment I think, and would well be worth the money, but you can't go wrong with the Nexus 7 2012 either! :)

An overwhelming preference for Nexus 7 then! Thanks guys. I take it there'll be no issues upgrading to newer versions of Android when the next few updates come out?

I watched a few videos of the Nexus in action and in fairness it looks pretty impressive for the price.

Google usually, give out updates for two years. So you have at least another year of updates! :)

I've had both the current and last years Nexus 7 tablets.
Both are great devices and from your shortlist last years Nexus 7 is the best.
However, as said above if you can increase your budget to 250 you can pick up the newer model which is faster and has a better screen.

The Asus MeMO Pad HD 7 might be one to consider.. think of it as a Nexus 7 with a Micro SD slot..

    www.currys.ie/Mobile/Product/ASUS-MeMO-Pad-HD-7andrdquo-Tablet-16-GB-White/319736/7.18

Asus have been cheeky sods from the aesthetic point of view, it is a clone!

There's a rebate with Currys at the moment which brings the price down from the current retail price of €159 to, I think, €129. (after rebate)

Available in a selection of colours with Asus branded protective (rubber like) flip covers sold alongside.

Ordered one two weeks ago and had no idea about the rebate. Gutted to say the least. Do you think there's anything I can do about chancing the rebate now? It's a birthday present for someone next week so I can't really return it and buy it again.

Here's the link to the online rebate page. The terms are listed. Covers sales as follows:
Buy any iPad, Android tablet, Kindle tablet or Chromebook from Currys or PC World between 7th November 2013 to 4th December 2013.

    https://www.curryspcworldcashback.ie/ie/en/pages/xmas/

If you've purchased the tablet within the above quoted dates, from that retailer, you should be okay.

What's the consensus on the Nexus 7 2012 vs the Asus MeMO Pad HD 7?

They're pretty much the same device. Asus have made both this years and last years Nexus 7.

Pretty much, minus NFC and a lower screen resolution (1280 x 800).

..for myself, I'd have a hard time justifying paying double for the Nexus 7. Couch surfing and playing video would be the sum of it, along with some 'out and about' use. The battery life is meant to be a tad better on the MeMO as well. go figure.

Just to add, the rebate on this model is €20, not €30. Apologies.

Are you comparing the Memo to the current or last years Nexus 7?
The 2012 Nexus 7 is pretty close in price whilst the current model is as you said much more expensive.
Shops are clearing off last years Nexus 7 now as the new model is out and prices on the older model have dropped.

Comparing the 2012 Nexus 7 to the Memo, they are pretty similar.
Memo has NFC (which no one seems to really use in practice).
Memo has SD slot and a rear camera.
Original N7 feels like a more 'premium device' with a nicer case.
Memory and screen are the same.
Battery is slightly better on Memo due to a slightly better chip.

Asus have just tweaked last years N7 design and are selling it as a pretty good entry level tablet.

Anyone used the Tesco tablet? Getting pretty decent reviews and looks great for the price.

Anyone any recommendations for a 10" + tablet?

Using a HP Touchpad with android on it, does the job but can be slow at times and battery life is crap..

Have the Gotab (belongs to the missus) and it does everything,I installed xbmc on it for her to stream US tv shows & it can be connected to a tv via hdmi.
The tablet has a mini hdmi port, the cables can be got online for small money as can covers,we got one with a built in keyboard for about €12.

Santa's bringing another one for the young fella.

Don't know much about the Hanspree model but it's quadcore so should be nippy.

Does anyone know if the nexus 7 1st gen support flash player? i'm looking to either buy the samsung tab3 or nexus 7 1st gen ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭kierancos

Most devices will support flash, but it depends on the version of Android, Adobe stopped supporting flash for android after 4.0, and android on the Nexus 7 is android 4.4. But you can still get the app on xda, but I'm not sure if it works as well as it did, because I have no need for it! But yes, you can get flash, and definitely go with the Nexus 7! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 439 ✭✭baingal nancer

Cheers for that, So your saying go for the nexus 7 1st gen over the samsung tab 3 ? seems to be what everyone else is saying aswell, there both same price at the min, tab 3 is 169.99 in DID and ARGOS have 1st gen nexus for the same

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 439 ✭✭baingal nancer

Also powercity have the samsung tab 2 for €149.95 ?

Just my opinion, but no, I wouldn't go any further than the nexus 7! 170 is well worth it, but can be bought online for less than 150 :P

Posted from my Nexus 7 :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

Just a question, I want the nexus for my daughter as it has 4.4, need something with at least 4.3 android for the parental restrictions. Will the Samsung tab update to 4.3 or 4.4 OTA?

The only reason considering the tab is the forward camera.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 439 ✭✭baingal nancer

I have'n seen it anywhere for less than €150? i'm starting to go towards the samsung tab 2 or 3 as the have front and back camera, would'n bother me but this is for a present , powercity have the tab 2 for 149 tab 3 for 169 in hmv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭kierancos

I meant the Nexus can be bought online for around 150, sorry. The Tab 2 is currently on 4.1, and doesnt look to be getting an update in the forseeable future. The Tab 3 is on 4.2 and I'm not sure if that is due for an update soon. Yeah if you want the back camera, might as well go for the Tab 3! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,663 ✭✭✭JoeyJJ

Want the back camera however the profile aspects in 4.3 and above are vital. hmmm thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 439 ✭✭baingal nancer

can flash be used on the the tab 3 do you know? as in can it be used for games and say tv players (rte player etc) ?

Cheers for your advice by the way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 67 ✭✭kierancos

All you have to do is get the app online (google flash.apk and you will see what I mean), however in my opinion I dont really see any need for flash. There are apps for nearly everything you need flash for (RTE Player, Youtube, Netflix etc.). But it depends what you want to use flash for I suppose :) All your flash gaming there are apps on the play store! Just my opinion though, as I havent needed flash since I upgraded my Nexus!

    4.1 was Jellybean aswell.
With the nexus you can use any of them. Even the latest 4.4 is availalble for the nexus 7.
