Just singing Hara Krishna song peacefully through an amp. I dont know much about them besides what my dad always said - that "they're alright"

So whats your views about them boards? (Poll added too)
Honestly the most I know about them is running them over in GTA2 (I know thats a terrible thing to say lol :pac: )

Spoke to one before. They are mostly alright but I dont like how they say to you "we give out these books for free" hand over the book and then say "but we do ask for 3-4 euro to cover printing costs."

The kept me alive in Prague, they cook free food without having to listen to a lecture. Donations suggested but really cheap suggested donation. Yummy vegan food.

They do the same at Glastonbury.

Just backing up my point really.

I like their food. Mind you their restaurant in Aungier St was closed down by the health board at one stage.

Anybody else seen the lad in the Yaris, who when sitting at traffic plays mini-cymbals and sings? Saw him on Westmoreland Street and Bolton Street.

Seemed like the Hare Krishna sort. Made my day though. :D

Never heard of him but I like Harvey the rabbit so I don't see why I wouldn't.

Lovely people, very gentle and friendly. Once got chatting to one in Henry Street years ago. Can't remember how, and I'm not in the slightest bit religious, but it didn't bother him, we just had a chat about what they do and why they go out on the streets playing music. Even though I only had my bus fare on me and couldn't give him a donation, he still insisted on giving me a book, even though he probably knew I'd never read it. But the best thing about them is their music. I love it and could listen to them playing for hours.

Visited Mayapur for a night a couple of years ago. Love the positivity of the Hare Krishna religion.

Had a boss who was Hare Krishna - disliked him intensely. Not a crazy guy just really really lazy.
Generally seem like a nice group.

I have to add that they have a beautiful song

... seems they just want to spread peace and joy. Good on them :)

Scientology has Tom Cruise. Hare Krishna has Boy George....not sure which religion got the rougher deal.

you have to wonder about possible subliminal messages in their Govinda' restaurant background music

Had a delightful meal there but afterwards had an unstoppable urge to the barbers followed by some clothes shopping and then lastly to waltons music shop.

Anyway the OH was appalled when I got home.

There I was with a newly shaved head bar a small pony tail dressed all in orange ringing a bell at the door

From what I read tonight on google/wikipedia/etc ... one sings and dances on the street and it's your choice to give money, whilst the other sucks money out of you & controls a very large segment of Hollywood.

HaHa I saw him on Wed, belting out Hare Krishna in a little car at the lights. Then he takes out these symbols and starts banging away on them. He brought a smile to everyone that saw him.
    A loon :D

I haven't come across any in a good few years. Always found them to be nice people though, and as a vegetarian Govinda's is always a handy spot for cheap and filling food when I'm in Dublin.

Their "Food for Life" organisation seems to do great work in providing food relief.

They actually rejected Boy George for being gay.

We watched a programme in school on the Hare Krishnas that live together in Wicklow. All I remember is that they can only have sex when they intend to procreate - or something along those lines.

I remember well back in the 80s when a large group of them used to shuffle along O'Connell street singing their Hare Krishna chants. I was always fascinated by their dress and their white 'tuning fork shape' face paint. http://www.musiccorner.co.uk/images/tuning_Fork.png

Do they still go around Dublin in a group?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,650 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

Harmless as a whole it seems, do some good. I do disagree with a few of their philosophies, but overall they probably make the world slightly better for being.

That said, in the first GTA games, nothing was quite as satisfying as lining up a bunch of them and getting them all in one :D

Apparently there is a split in the Hare Krishna movement in Dublin at the moment with two rival factions worshipping in seperate temples.

Thats complete rubbish.. I've two friends who are Krishna's and they're like anyone else when it comes to their sex life, dating etc.. And one of these is pretty devout too.

Russell Brand is Hare Krishna also....its a religion that seems to draw a particular type of fcked up celebrity

Well then why couldn't you just say you were in Dublin? Or on whatever street, in Dublin?

I think they're ripping off Catholicism. Whenever WE sing or give out free food, people just say "Ah look at them do-gooders, ramming their religion down my throat"

In what way are they ripping of Catholicism? The Hare Krishna's are doing their thing, and you can do your thing, surely - not seeing the problem.

So they're Catholicism without the envy, simmering distrust or insidious guilt?

Eh, by singing and giving out free food. I never said it was a problem, just pointing out the different reactions the public generally give.

All the little cymbals ye're talking about are called finger cymbals :)

Have no problem with the Hare Krishna's, they're quite interesting when you get to talk with them
That and they have good music

Obviously not *too devout though. "Avoiding illicit sex" is one of the 6 main must do things with the Hare's. Illicit sex being any sex engaged in for any reason other than procreation, as otherwise it's gratification of the personal senses and not for Krishna's pleasure.

It's hypocrisy on the part of the people who react that way, but it's hardly the fault of the Hare Krishna's. Catholics don't have a monopoly on singing and acts of charity.

Never said we do either. I merely drew parallels between what we do and what the Hare do, and pointed out the different reactions people give. The last few posts proved my point. Sure the Hare are great, but the minute I mention the "C" word, accusations of "guilt, insecurity, over-sensitive, simmering envy" etc are thrown my direction. People are weird.

Interesting piece of useless info...Maurice Foley, the guitarist/vocalist of the legendary Dublin punk band The Threat,
became a Hare Krishna in 1982 after the band split up.

    and post pointless replies.

    Seriously stop it.

And if people react differently to catholics rather than Hares it's because of their experience with catholics and Hares.

Hares dance and sing to music and give out free food. That's 99% of of our experience with a hare Krishna.

catholics don't dance in the street that much. In fact I can't remember when I last saw a catholic dance. When they sing, there's very little joy in their voices. And the rest of the time when we have an experience with a catholic they are preaching. Or protesting against something like contraception, divorce, abortion or gay rights.
catholics do not come across as happy people. It's far easier to state what a catholic is against rather than what they are actually for.

Total legends. Passed one of their restaurant yokes in town the other day and dived in for a nose. Ended up stuffing myself with samosas, chickpea curry, cauliflower curry, pilau rice and a raft of other vittles. Absolutely fantastic grub and they were looking for around £3 only. I felt guilty leaving them only £6.50.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,831 ✭✭✭genericguy

I like them. Not into their beliefs at all or anything, it's more the fact that they meet people and say "hey, the world is great lets all be happy together", whereas the catholic street preachers (mar shampla, the fat red head at the GPO) are telling everyone "hey, the world is fooked, join Jesus or die and get burned forever, and don't be gay or get abortions or else".

At least the Hare Krishnas have a bit of positivity about them. And are generally nice folks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,394 ✭✭✭mojesius

Love the positivity, their outlook, their general demeanor. Yummy food too. They drive a small car around the area (Capel street) a few times most days blaring their tunes. Sometimes people join in and cheer and sing. Great stuff altogether!

Better than the wails of skangers screaming at each other from one end of the street to the other anyway. Or drunken eejits falling out of the early houses.
