IGN's provisional 8.8 is commendable because I was certain they'd go for a high 9 or even a 10. They regularly, and quite rightly, get stick for their inflated reviews so I'm glad to see a bit of restraint from them.

There is pretty much no difference between 8.8 and 9 in my eyes.

Both mean "This is a really great game and I liked it".

Look at the comments section on IGN and you'll see the difference 0.2 can make. The review is getting absolutely flamed because it's not 9 or above.

I agree with you though. High scores are generally indicative of a good game but I take them with a pinch of salt. Edge's are the only ones I take seriously and even then it's still only another useful guide.

But the few negative reviews of Uncharted are not going down well, so I'm glad IGN didn't capitulate (yet), for the sake of a balanced argument.
