Any reason you choose that PSU.

No particular reason. Got alright reviews. Around about the max wattage I would want with a single GPU and some future OC'ing in mind. Might even give me some room for SLI too but that's not a priority. Like the lights too but aren't necessary.
Is there something wrong with it?

    I went for this monitor
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BSOT2LA
LG 24EA53VQ 24" Widescreen LED IPS Monitor.

Pretty good reviews. Modest response time of 5ms. Good viewing angles. Looking forward to it. Should arrive on Wed and I haven't even ordered my PC yet.

Bloodbath bought a similar one IPs off amazon. Waiting to hear his feedback on it.

He mentioned it above. Reading up on reviews they seem like they are good value for money and review pretty well.

Currently on a 19" monitor so this is going to take some getting used to I would imagine.

Well for the sake of 8 euro you could have a be quiet 7 700 w silver rating.

Haha I'm still on 19 myself. If I can manage to sit in one weekend I will pick up a monitor. My machine is wasted on this old thing.

Sorry I didn't get back to you. I was actually in the middle of replying to you yesterday and I accidentally hit the side mouse button that goes back a web page and lost my post. Rage.

The extreme 3 is fine. The difference between it and the extreme 4 is 2 less sata ports, the 4 has slightly better onboard sound and has more power phases.

12 power phases is complete overkill for a Haswell anyway so that's no issue. 6 sata ports is probably more than enough for you as well and I wouldn't worry much about the audio. The Msi g45 gaming is a great board as well though. Pretty much the same specs as the extreme 4 and better looking.

If you haven't ordered yet then as Sterling said the 700w be quiet system power 7 would be the better psu choice. It will give you more overhead for dual cards and is more efficient.

I got my monitor yesterday and it's top notch apart from the stand which isn't even an issue for me really. The out of the box settings were awful but I got it sorted and it looks great now. I made a post about the settings here.

Thanks for the suggestion lads. Decided to go with the Be quiet PSU that you suggested. It was this one..wasn't it? 700W and 80+ silver.

I think I might go ahead and order it tonight.

Looks good. That's the psu yes.

You're not going to bother with a cpu cooler then either?

There's a cheaper card reader there as well.

Right, you've convinced me to get different cooler. Kindly recommend me one, good sir!

Either of these 2 should do the trick. The thermalright is a bit better and quieter but it's also a lot bigger. Make sure it fits the case.

It doesn't say anywhere that those coolers support socket 1150. Will thy work?

If I was going to go for the thermalrightone the case I'm using is 23.2 cm x 52.3 cm x 46.4 cm

It says the cooler is 162 mm x 140 mm x 102 mm. Meaning that I have at least a minimum of 7cms to play with taking into account for the motherboard+cpu height as well as the under-motherboard cable routing compartment.

Yeah they will work on haswell. A lot of people have bought them for 1150. don't know why they haven't updated the information.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

Thanks for that. Looking at a review of the case on hexus.net, they suggest that the max cooler height is 170mm. Too close for comfort?

Does anyone know how HWVS assembly works? Probably a stupid question, but will they attach the cooler and plug it in for me or will they be leaving the plugging in to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

They won't attach a cooler, as in transit can cause damage to the pc. So you will have to do yourself unfortunately.

Their cable management is done pretty well.

Is there any extra cables worth getting my hands on in the mean time to make sure it all goes smoothly for me? Will I need any converters, extensions, thermal paste etc.
Looks like the PSU I'm going to get is out of stock for a couple of days but I should be ordering the computer by the end of tomorrow.

So, I'm going to go and buy this tonight. This is my final build.
Going to skip on buying a cooler from HWVS and maybe get one down the line from Overclockers or Amazon. Going to see how the temps are in my case and take it from there.

    This is my final build.

Anyone got any objections/suggestions before I go and buy this in the next couple of hours?

I got my monitor earlier today. Very happy with it. The setting out of the bix were pretty bad with it being WAY too bright, gamma being off and there being a slight greenish tinge to a lot of stuff. There is a setting to reduce response times for but I found that there was a small bit of ghosting occuring with that enabled. I turned it off. I noticed some ghosting when I moved the cursor across some beige/grey colours (like the darker greys on boards.ie). Turned off the response reducer setting and that eliminated it, which is odd. There is some light leakage in the bottom left corner of the screen. Nothing too major but it is noticeable and I'm sure I wont even notice it in time. Doesn't even bother me now.

Just be sure to order your two sticks of ram as a single 2 x 4 GB kit. The sticks of ram in a kit have been tested to work together. Buying two separate sticks of ram of the exact same spec doesn't guarantee that they'll actually work together (they probably will, but sometimes they don't).

Right. That's the reason why I had two separate sticks in there. They were sold out of the same RAM in a bundle. I'll go back and check to see if they have them in stock.

Why are you not bothering with the cpu cooler?

My monitor took some calibration as well. It's still not 100% but i haven't bothered tweaking it too much. It also has a little backlight bleed in the bottom left but it's not that noticeable. You would have to have a black background in a dark room to really see it.

Mine also had a greenish tinge. I found that the PC - Photo preset was pretty good. I turned off super resolution+ as well.

The ag coating is the only thing annoying me now but I'll get used to it I guess.

Going to get either of the coolers you recommended. Been looking at them or the Xigmatek Dark Knight which gets relatively good reviews and I like the look of it. Going to buy it off Amazon/Overclockers wherever it's cheapest.

I suppose I have been a little undecided about the cooler since I'm new to this whole thermal paste/messing around with the motherboard stuff. For the most part, the biggest thing I've done is some light OC'ing and changing a GPU/HD or two. I suppose I have to get ,y hands dirty at some point.
Would you recommend against the Xigmatek cooler, other than it being that little bit more expensive.

Ordered it there. Came to €750 with delivery, assembly and that damn PayPal 3% charge. Now I play the waiting game. Thanks again lads for your help. I'll post back here and let you know how I got on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,283 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

You can pay by bank transfer through online banking to avoid the 3% paypal charge. It takes a day or 2 extra for the money to clear though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

Yeah. I know that but from reading on here it seems a lot of people had trouble paying for it via that method. A few too many hoops to jump through. Just want it come asap now.
Thanks for your help/suggestion BloodBath. Much appreciated.

I paid through bank transfer and it went very smoothly. Best of luck with your new computer. Were all the parts in stock when you ordered?

Yeah. The PSU was out of stock up until this morning. Had been OOS for 2 days. It suited me to wait to make sure that I had all my ducks in a row. Anyone know how long it'll take them to assemble it all and how long the shipping usually takes? Got the email and they've already taken the money from my account.

I emailed them yesterday to see if they could update me on the progress etc. Never got back to me but I rang them and they said it's shipping today. NICE! Now off to buy that cooler.

So, my computer arrived on Tuesday evening and despite trying to resist getting to working installing Windows etc since I got them to assemble it for me, I couldn't resist. Had to install Win7, then upgrade to Win8 then to 8.1

Thought I had the UEFI settings in order but after futher research I found out that I had it set up wrong for the SSD/mobo to work in Win8 mode. Ended up reinstalling Windows the following day. Moving all my documents back to my 2TB drive now and all is going well. After reading some stories about USB problems I got a bit worried when my keyboard disconnected shortly after boot. Did the bios update outside of the OS and that sorted that out.

Haven't gotten around to playing any games on it yet but I am loving it so far. I just wanna say thanks to those who gave their input and suggestion. Much appreciated.
