    1. What is your budget? About €1100 max

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Will be using the computer for predominantly gaming. Some of the latest and greatest ones. Will also be using it for streaming video to my PS3 via PS3 media server. Nothing TOO intensive on the streaming front.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Nope. I have a copy of Windows 8.

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Maybe use the DVD RW. Currently have XPS630i. I have 3 HDs in there and would like to keep my new 2TB one and possibly my 640GB one for storage/backup etc

    5. Do you need a monitor? Yes. I have a 1440x900 and would love to upgrade to something a good bit larger, resolution wise anyway.

5a. If yes, what size do you need. Would like a screen in and around the 22" size. Couldn't really go much bigger.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?
    [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [Yes/No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? The only peripheral I'd possibly need is a card reader.

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes. I've done it before and would probably do it again further down the line to get some more life/juice out of the computer but capability not essential

    8. How can you pay? Can pay by visa, mastercard

    9. When are you purchasing? As soon as possible. Have the money ready to go.

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? I would like for it to be built for me ala HWVS but I am willing to give self assembly a go if needed.

FYI I'm living in the Essex,UK. Have a G700 mouse, G19 Keyboard and G930 headset (currently going through a Logitech buzz atm)

I recently bought a new GPU "KFA2 GeForce GTX 660 EX OC 2048MB" which I would like to keep in there. Maybe as a second GPU for PhysX etc if possible.

So I had a look on HWVS there.
    Tried out this build.
    What do people think?
    Item|Price
    Rechner - Zusammenbau|€20
    8GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz CL9|€80.12
Cooler Master HAF XM mit Sichtfenster, ATX, ohne Netzteil|€119.38
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming, ATX, Sockel 1150|€132.58
    Ultron Cardreader 75-in-1, intern, schwarz|€9.46
    Thermaltake Smart SE 730W / Modular|€80.44
    LG Flatron 22EA53VQ-P|€121.67
    Intel Core i5-4670K Box, LGA1150|€204.92
Samsung SSD 840 EVO Basic 120GB SATA 6Gb/s|€89.99
    LG BH16NS40 Blu-Ray Brenner Bulk|€72.44
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€949.99

Something went wrong with the script. Had to add in the prices myself. Also the card reader and Bluray drive aren't really essential since I can use the DVD RW and media card reader from my current PC. Have quite a few blurays but are the drives worth the money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

Anyone got any suggestions/builds? I can pretty much remove the Bluray drive and just get a DVDRW. Any help would be much appreciated. Looking to get something that will last me a good while. My XPS630 has been solid for years since I'm playing a low resolution and the PSU has been able to handle a GTX 275 (with a 9800GT too) and a GTX 660

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

I might be wrong but you appear to be missing a gpu.

Have you considered an Amd processor.More bang.
get a cheaper mobo as well. Drop the blueray.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

The reason why I'm missing a GPU is because I bought a GTX 660 a bout 4/5 months ago. I was kind of willing to keep it but maybe I should get something more up to date. Would the PSU be able to support say one of the latest cards with a GTX 660 in there too? Should I bother?

Haven't looked into AMD. I'm not sure I want to but I could be persuaded i think.

Anyone got any suggestions on a monitor too?
    I'll redo my build later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Sorry i missed your point about having a gpu already.

Amd wise, you could have a fx6300 and a board for less than the price of that Intel chip. It may not be quite as powerful but its not too far behind either. Im sure one of the lads will whip you up a build or two.

That case is expensive for what it is. Have you looked at the Nanoxia cases? Very good quality for around €90. You could put the saving towards a 24" screen.

That's definitely a possibility. Think I might be able to bump the size of the screen to 24" too. Worried it might have been TOO big for where I have the computer but I think I can manage it.
I'll look up some Nanoxia cases.

While I'm finalising my build, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to go ahead and get the monitor from somewhere else.
    Was looking at this one
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-G246HLBBID-inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B008I39WXC
24" Acer monitor. Seems to get really good reviews for pic quality. Some reports of ghosting on text/webpage etc but that wouldn't be too much of a problem as long as it performs well while gaming. Any other suggestions for a monitor?

Been also looking at this one too.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-VE247H-Widescreen-Intelligence-Technology/dp/B004T2LMP2
    Asus 24" monitor.
    Any thoughts?

I have that monitor and its really good quality and think its well worth the price. If you got rid of the blu ray drive you could even get a better monitor or upgrade some other parts. I had a blu ray drive in my computer before but ended up never using it. Unless you know you will use it for certain I wouldnt bother with it.

Also if you are thinking about changing your case I would go for something like this.

Right. I'm deffo removing the Bluray drive. Gto aDVDRW in there instead. Going to get a SSD for my main OS drive and have a 2TB drive for my main data drive. Also have a 640GB drive and a 320GB one for all my backups etc. I will be running at least 2 HDs (probably 3)in my new computer.

I like a quiet chassis but I like the flashiness too. I Like LEDs/side windows etc but they certainly aren't a necessity. That chasis you recommended seems really nice. Quiet and slick too.

Thanks for your constructive input there....
The GTX 660 is hardly *****, as you put it. There is a time and a budget for each GPU. At the time I bought the 660 my budget allowed that. I asked a question if it was worth keeping it, getting rid of it or new card in there and using the 660 as a second card or going SLI with my current 660. Your comment is neither constructive, nor helpful.

Sell it and get a decent card and then go SLI in the future

Currently this is what I'm thinking.

    Item|Price
    Ultron Cardreader 75-in-1, intern, schwarz|€9.46
    Corsair Gaming Series GS600 2013 Edition 600W|€72.39
FRACTAL DESIGN Define R4 Titanium Grey Window side panel|€97.43
    Intel Core i5-4670K Box, LGA1150|€204.92
    LG GH24NS bare schwarz|€17.16
Samsung SSD 840 EVO Basic 120GB SATA 6Gb/s|€89.99
    Rechner - Zusammenbau|€20.00
    8GB-Kit G.Skill RipJaws PC3-8500U CL7|€73.38
MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate, ATX, 1150|€83.31
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€687.03

Any objections etc? Seems solid, I think Getting a 22"-24" monitor to go with that too. not sure which to go with but it should be in/around £150 and no more.

Do you plan on overclocking soon or anything? If so you should get a different cpu fan.

Any idea which monitor you plan on getting?

Also that looks like a really good case. Has some great reviews online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

I am planning on overclocking at some stage but not anytime soon. Probably when I notice the computer beginning to show it's age. I should probably get a different cooler then. Any suggestions?

Beginning to really like the case I linked earlier.

I linked to two monitors in the post just above.
These two. Looking for a 22"-24" monitor about the €180/£150 (MAX)

    Acer 24"
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acer-G246HLBBID-inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B008I39WXC

    Asus 24"
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-VE247H-Widescreen-Intelligence-Technology/dp/B004T2LMP2

    Also possibly this one too.
    LG 23"
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BJHBUW0/ref=noref?ie=UTF8&psc=1&s=computers

You could always wait and buy the cooler some time in the future when you feel you want to overclock.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-120mm/dp/B0068OI7T8/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1384711934&sr=1-1&keywords=cpu+cooler
The one above is usually recommended on boards and other websites but I have no experience with that cooler.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-24EA53VQ-24-inch-Widescreen-Monitor/dp/B00BSOT2LA/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1384711825&sr=1-1&keywords=lg+24ea53vq
This screen is an lg 24" and would be of a very good standard. Out of the two you are looking at I would personally go with the asus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

Not too sure if I'll go with the LG one or the Asus one.
Think I'll leave the cooler for now but I'll keep that one in mind.
Also, what do you think about the GPU I currently have.

    KFA2 GTX 660 EX OC 2GB

What would you suggest I do there. Just go ahead and get a new one. Maybe SLI my current one with another one of the same cards.
Possibly looking at a GTX 770. I can get a GTX 680 for a very similar price.

I did only buy my current one about 5 months ago. Would feel bad about getting rid of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

So the mobo I chose doesn't support SLI so that's out of the question.
Looks like I'll get a new GPU then. Suggestions welcome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 tipp2k12

You can always try and sell it through adverts or something. Are you going to be doing high end gaming?
This card is good bang for buck
    http://www.hardwareversand.de/2048+MB/110124/Gigabyte+Radeon+R9+270X%2C+2GB+DDR5%2C+PCI-Express.article

I suppose I could. Living in the UK so Adverts wouldn't really work for me. Might think about that.
Been an Nvidia man for years. That seems like a really good card. Might have to look into that one.

Will be doing quite a bit of gaming on this. High end, with latest games etc.

Since this is a tower case too I shouldn't run into problems with the larger GPUs these days, would I?
Thanks a lot for your help/suggestions.

Do I need anything else? Is anyone foreseeing any problems with that build? Everything compatible?
That cooler you suggested above tipp2k12 is currently sold out on HWVS so I could always get it further down the line.

As essentially a rebranded 7870 the R270x would be a sideways move from a GTX660 definitely not worth replacing it with.

    http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/radeon_r7_260x_r9_270x_280x_review_benchmarks,17.html

It still an ok card for 1080p gaming at fairly high settings, so you could always hang onto for a year or so and then upgrade to get your moneys worth out of it if you steer clear of 4X MSAA+ there aren't that many games where you would have to lower quality setting by much.

Ya you prob would be best off sticking with your current card. I myself recently only got rid of a gtx 550ti a couple months back and it was still playing modern games.

I dont know if you are aware of this thread but it will save you some money

Right, So I might not get that card then.... Might think about putting that money towards a PS4 or something!

I had seen that thread the other day. I did a trial on a previous build i mocked up and it shaved off €20 for me. Using that will pretty much pay for the delivery/assembly for me.

So what is your budget now? Are you not looking to spend the full €1100? Build looks ok. A couple of issues.

The ram is quite slow. It's only 1033 mhz. Despite the good timings. You can get 1600mhz cl9 ram for the same price.

The 660 is still a good card but if you want an upgrade go for a 280x or 770 gtx. Either that or update the board to an Asrock z87 extreme 4, which is a great board for €120, and then grab a second 660.

I also love the titanium R4. Good choice. Another to consider is the Nanoxia deep silence one. HWVS sell the windowed version now as well. Overall it's the better case but you can't go wrong with either.

You could save some money and go for a 500w psu. If you're sticking with a single card 500w is plenty even with overclocking.

I ordered one of those lg 23" ips panels last week. I got it for €141. It's €150 now from Amazon. It's arriving Tuesday so i'll let you know what I think of it if you want.

Well, I'm planning on spending €180/£150 on a screen. Probably 24". That leaves me with about €800-€850 to spend on the box itself.

I'll change up the RAM later and go for the faster one. That build I currently have is coming in at €660 or so. It leaves me about €200 to either save, maybe get a new GPU. It's not like I have to spend it but it's there if I need or want it. Might think about getting a 770.

That mobo you recommended isn't available via HWVS but the Extreme 3 is for €110. Should I go with that one instead? Any major differences between them? Kind of keen to get HWVS to assemble it for me since I amn't that confident to do it myself.

If i did go with that mobo you suggested then I would be able to get another GTX660 OC from Overclockers for £150 (€180). What you think?

Also, would it be necessecary to get a different cooler for the CPU?

    Thanks for the suggestions btw.

Since I cant get the mobo you recommended I think I will go with this one here
The MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX mobo, LGA1150

Looks like a really nice mobo if not a tad bit pricey but I think I'm ok with spending a little extra on it.
I think I'm almost done here.

This is probably going to be my close to final build
    Item|Price

Am I missing something. Going to keep my current GPU for a little while and see how that fares and upgrade later on. I'll be moving my 2TB HD from my current build into the new computer.

Think I will go with the Asus monitor I liked up above via Amazon for about €170.

Can anyone recommend a cooler for me? since the one I was recommended above isn't in stock on HWVS. Either that or I'll will get a better cooler down the line when I upgrade my GPU and think about getting into some Overclocking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 tipp2k12

You could always buy the cpu cooler from amazon or some other site if HWVS dont have it in stock. If you dont plan on overclocking for the time being you may aswell just stick with the stock cooler.

    I went for this monitor
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BSOT2LA
LG 24EA53VQ 24" Widescreen LED IPS Monitor.

Pretty good reviews. Modest response time of 5ms. Good viewing angles. Looking forward to it. Should arrive on Wed and I haven't even ordered my PC yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

Any reason you choose that PSU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,923 ✭✭✭kearneybobs

No particular reason. Got alright reviews. Around about the max wattage I would want with a single GPU and some future OC'ing in mind. Might even give me some room for SLI too but that's not a priority. Like the lights too but aren't necessary.
Is there something wrong with it?

He mentioned it above. Reading up on reviews they seem like they are good value for money and review pretty well.

Currently on a 19" monitor so this is going to take some getting used to I would imagine.

No particular reason. Got alright reviews. Around about the max wattage I would want with a single GPU and some future OC'ing in mind. Might even give me some room for SLI too but that's not a priority. Like the lights too but aren't necessary.
Is there something wrong with it?

Well for the sake of 8 euro you could have a be quiet 7 700 w silver rating.

Haha I'm still on 19 myself. If I can manage to sit in one weekend I will pick up a monitor. My machine is wasted on this old thing.

Sorry I didn't get back to you. I was actually in the middle of replying to you yesterday and I accidentally hit the side mouse button that goes back a web page and lost my post. Rage.

The extreme 3 is fine. The difference between it and the extreme 4 is 2 less sata ports, the 4 has slightly better onboard sound and has more power phases.

12 power phases is complete overkill for a Haswell anyway so that's no issue. 6 sata ports is probably more than enough for you as well and I wouldn't worry much about the audio. The Msi g45 gaming is a great board as well though. Pretty much the same specs as the extreme 4 and better looking.

If you haven't ordered yet then as Sterling said the 700w be quiet system power 7 would be the better psu choice. It will give you more overhead for dual cards and is more efficient.

I got my monitor yesterday and it's top notch apart from the stand which isn't even an issue for me really. The out of the box settings were awful but I got it sorted and it looks great now. I made a post about the settings here.

Looks good. That's the psu yes.

You're not going to bother with a cpu cooler then either?

There's a cheaper card reader there as well.

Right, you've convinced me to get different cooler. Kindly recommend me one, good sir!

Either of these 2 should do the trick. The thermalright is a bit better and quieter but it's also a lot bigger. Make sure it fits the case.

It doesn't say anywhere that those coolers support socket 1150. Will thy work?

If I was going to go for the thermalrightone the case I'm using is 23.2 cm x 52.3 cm x 46.4 cm

It says the cooler is 162 mm x 140 mm x 102 mm. Meaning that I have at least a minimum of 7cms to play with taking into account for the motherboard+cpu height as well as the under-motherboard cable routing compartment.

Yeah they will work on haswell. A lot of people have bought them for 1150. don't know why they haven't updated the information.

Thanks for that. Looking at a review of the case on hexus.net, they suggest that the max cooler height is 170mm. Too close for comfort?

Does anyone know how HWVS assembly works? Probably a stupid question, but will they attach the cooler and plug it in for me or will they be leaving the plugging in to me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭SterlingArcher

They won't attach a cooler, as in transit can cause damage to the pc. So you will have to do yourself unfortunately.

Their cable management is done pretty well.

Is there any extra cables worth getting my hands on in the mean time to make sure it all goes smoothly for me? Will I need any converters, extensions, thermal paste etc.
Looks like the PSU I'm going to get is out of stock for a couple of days but I should be ordering the computer by the end of tomorrow.

So, I'm going to go and buy this tonight. This is my final build.
Going to skip on buying a cooler from HWVS and maybe get one down the line from Overclockers or Amazon. Going to see how the temps are in my case and take it from there.

    This is my final build.

Anyone got any objections/suggestions before I go and buy this in the next couple of hours?

I got my monitor earlier today. Very happy with it. The setting out of the bix were pretty bad with it being WAY too bright, gamma being off and there being a slight greenish tinge to a lot of stuff. There is a setting to reduce response times for but I found that there was a small bit of ghosting occuring with that enabled. I turned it off. I noticed some ghosting when I moved the cursor across some beige/grey colours (like the darker greys on boards.ie). Turned off the response reducer setting and that eliminated it, which is odd. There is some light leakage in the bottom left corner of the screen. Nothing too major but it is noticeable and I'm sure I wont even notice it in time. Doesn't even bother me now.

Just be sure to order your two sticks of ram as a single 2 x 4 GB kit. The sticks of ram in a kit have been tested to work together. Buying two separate sticks of ram of the exact same spec doesn't guarantee that they'll actually work together (they probably will, but sometimes they don't).

Right. That's the reason why I had two separate sticks in there. They were sold out of the same RAM in a bundle. I'll go back and check to see if they have them in stock.
