    Exactly what I mean :)

SG's post from the other day was just as good though " A downhill gathering Moss has no stones" or something like that :D

It's the heart break I'm worried about. Was just reading about the suspension on alfaowner.Stocks not up to the job with all the weight. They recomend upgrading with aftermarket stuff for 550stg. Seems a good but expensive idea. Brakes are apparently ****e too

    lol

no leather wouldn't be a game changer so much as timing belt needing done. Can it be done on a driveway with the engine in place?

1.9 m-jet seem the better option the more I look into it but doubt it will be got for them sort of moneys.Have a small 4 pot diesel phobia though:o, although in a medium sized car the weight becomes more of an issue. Also looking at this with my half sensible hat on. Looking more likely tbh unless it's a rusty shed. http://www.adverts.ie/car/audi/80-avant/1995-audi-80-avant-for-sale/2832739 bit of a step down :)

Superflex it up.€250 for the full car, no more flappy arms.

The brakes are sh*te as standard, a good set of ebc pads and a dot 5.1 fluid change are a start. Or if you have a grand knocking abut, GTA up the front of it!

As for no leather, meh. I prefer the velours (then again, I'm a weird c*nt :p )

And doing a 2.4 tb is virtually an engine out job

God no! I refuse to pay insurance that is worth more than the value of the car. Simply not worth it.

My insurance is twice the value of the car on third party only. :o

Cheers for that. Polybushes did cross my mind earlier. Will look into that.

Thought it looked a bit tight for the TB from a few engine bay pics :). Would probably have to fork out for a cam locking tool of some sort too. 500 to have it done otherwise?

I exchanged a few emails with the seller. Will probably come down to if he the receipts for all that work and the last TB change whenever that was.

Any of you on italian car club of ireland. Cant see what it says here about the car.

Not good. I'm paying just under a grand. Next year it will be €470 or there abouts. I was banned for two years and then I have three years endorsement. But that ran out last month but I am still on the endrosement insurance as I'm half way through and it will be an extra year claims free, rather than starting fresh and losing half a year claims free.

Damn. What I spent on my policy this year would cover 4 years for you.

Well I'm not on the cheap insurance yet. another 7 months to go. But if it's any consolation I was paying 3 or 4 grand when I was your age on 1.3 Honda civic, provisional licence.

    Well, I've a full licence, y'know...

At first I thought smaller engine = cheaper insurance, but it was strange to see the price go up from 1.6 Bora to a 1.3 Colt of the same year.

I think insurance works on the risk profile of the car as well as the driver.

So if your a young driver insurers might actually see a 1.6 Bora - standard spec - as been a more sensible (old man type) car.

    Then a 1.3 Colt.

Whats possibly happened is that the level of claims on 1.3 Colts is higher then on Bora 1.6s

So the risk is assessed on that basis - id also say a factor in the risk assessment isn't just the Colt itself - but the fact that a 1.3/1.4 Jap hatch - so Corolla/Colt/Civic - is in itself seen as a risk - as lots of young drivers will go for that type of car.

1.6 Saloons aren't on the agenda - so you might find the Bora situation applies to say a 1.6 Avensis too

Im open to correction on the above - but that's my theory on it anyhow

So if I buy a Volvo 850 then my insurance will be dirt cheap? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,871 ✭✭✭Foxhole Norman

Yup, my brother was paying €200 more on a 1.3 96 Civic than he would've been if he decided to get a 3.0 03 5 Series :D

Its difficult to say - because firstly it depends on the model of the 850 - a T5 would be seen as a high performance car.

Also irish insurers are a bit odd on things like engine size - so could look at a 2 litre 850 - and risk assess it on it been a 2 litre - as in "2 litre - that's a performance car"

But to give you an idea of how insurers think - I recall reading online a chap in the Uk talking about his first car

He went for a 1.8 Nissan Bluebird - a family saloon with a 1.8 engine - because he could insure it for less then a 1 litre Fiesta.

Bluebird was less of a risk as far as insurer then the Fiesta.

Only way to see about the 850 is to just get a quote and see what comes back.

Insurance in my 240bhp S Type was less than my 89bhp 2.0D Avensis, my 1.8 Civic is more expensive than both of them to insure despite being 100hp down on the Jaguar...

    It's all about risk.

Young lads drive Civics and the pipe and slipper brigade drive Jags, no matter how powerful.

It appears you're both Colm! :D

Same here with insurance. €1100 to renew the 406 (pricks ) or €829 for the 520i, both fully comp

The kits can be expensive but the superflex Strongflex kit isn't and having driven a V6 with that very kit I can say it handled very well!

I always get those 2 mixed up. It's strongflex you need

You'd need the engine out anyway, although some reckon you can tilt the engine and do it that way still in the bay.... I'd have it out though. Don't know what tools you'd need for the 2.4 but they shouldn't be too dear.

I'm on that forum ;) that thread is about a JTD SW that went to some chap in Galway, then went to Cork. Seems to be remapped. 04C26738
