Exactly, I cant see how people abandon their cars in the middle of a flood like that. I'd have no problem jumping into the water and pulling/pushing the car out asap. Actually wait, I wouldn't be so stupid to drive into a flood that's too deep in the first place...

Trying to help the father pick out his next car the man is 65 years of age has never driven a diesel car in his life and he reckons this is a car he will keep for a long time, now all of a sudden keeps looking at small diesel engined cars he want's cheap tax and insurance .

Like banging your head against a brick wall talking to him. If i had to drive small diesel engined car everyday reckon it would suck the life out of me.

Does he like driving or is it just to get from A to B?

He likes his cars has always said he would love a Volvo a car with nice interior etc loves driving my car when he gets the odd chance but then he kicks into stereotypical Irish mode with the mother egging him on to get what she calls sensible car.

I'd say dealerships generally love seeing his type walk in it really is easy money. His best friend just bought a brand fresh out the wrapper Corolla and doesn't even know what engine is in it :pac:.

Well if he likes cars and likes driving yours, I can assure you that a small diesel engine will drain the life out of him and he will hate driving in no time. He will also be looking for your car more :P

I know that what I've been trying to tell him show him a Mondeo and Volvo S40's etc and he likes them then he slips back into old Irish mode of small engine like banging your head off a brick wall. The mother was banging on about how much tyres are in my car so asked him how often has he changed tyres in his cars he reckons once in the last 7 years :pac:.

I know he will be looking for mine more just as well I'm moving further away from him :).

What's the quality of the microfibres like? I was going to get ten packs of them if they were any use.

That's the rough size of one. 3 per box. They seem soft and absorbent. No small bits are coming loose from it anyway!

Ah yes, think I remember them now, kind of like large spectacle cleaning cloths. Not sure how these perform with polish/wax or the likes, has anyone used them before?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,295 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

Grand for drying yer hands, thats about it

I got loads of them the last time they were in Aldi. They're good for dusting the dash/console or for cleaning glasses but they're as absorbent as a lump of plastic. Even when used to buff wax, they don't absorb anything. I have safety oil in the boot and I have the recess lined with those cloths to stop the bottle moving and banging :pac:

Frustrating as it is - the easiest thing to do - is to just let him get on with it - unless he proposes buying something with a particularly bad reliability reputation.

If hes like mine - he will make his own mind up - and won't be swayed - unless the local mechanic warns him off it or something.

Problem too - is that if your into cars like I (and I assume you are too) am - that does colour our perceptions on what cars he should drive.

Spent a particularly epically boring afternoon looking (on my own) looking at car versions of the Berlingo, Kangoo, and also a Ford Fusion.

Personally I hate the Fusion* - but at the end of the day - it could have been a car that would have suited what he wanted.

Its probably a good thing in hindsight that Ford didn't do the 1.6 tdci version of the Fusion (or Mk 6 Fiesta) over here.

    Might have bought one otherwise

*Mind you I hate the car he DID buy a Nissan Tiida even more

I'm trying to resist the temptation to go in. As I went in the last time lidl (I think) were selling all the car cleaning stuff and came out with a bag wedged with stuff :). I still have some of the stuff left.

In other news I was going home today from college and the car was parked up as usual since the Monday (I see no point in sitting in trafic in cork when I can walk where I need to go). Anyway started the car put down the handbrake went to go two rear drums locked up solid  they've done it before but never this bad normally just let out the clutch a small bit to go and they free themselves. Today I was there for ages trying to do the whole forward and reverse thing one freed reasonably quickly but the driver side took a while even dragged on the ground a tiny bit at one stage. Eventually got going anyway that's the main thing. Would I be right in thinking if the handbrake is not pulled up as much then it is less likely to happen?

What I do to combat this as much as possible is to pull up the handbrake as little as possible to sot the car from rolling. Then leave the car in 1st or reverse as a fail safe.:) They can still get a little bit stuck if left on for a very long time or they get wet and dry out again.

I think I'll start pulling it up a bit less when parking it up for a length of time and leave it in gear I normally do this anyway. It happens rarely enough outside of when it's parked up during college as I use it regularly during holidays and weekend normally a few times a day.

Wants a Volvo with cheap tax, that looks sensible, but won't sap the life out of you?

    New Volvo S60 D4

Cheaper to tax than the 1.6d version with only 99g of Co2, 181ps and 0-62mph in under 7.5 seconds.

Seen a what car report on this online and it seemed very favourable.

Regardless of that - youd have to admire the ability to get 99 g of Co2 AND - 181 ps and 7.5 seconds from the same car.

I assume the car won't do its claimed fuel economy in the real world - but even if it "only" did 50 mpg - that's still very very impressive for the power and performance figures

    All imo

Some of the treads recently have become very AH in nature as they go on,
guess people are feeling that the forum has become more inviting to other users. Just look at the "is this a driving offence?" and "Question - Who should pay the costs" as an example. Just something I noticed.

Bangernomics thread is on its last legs, chat thread too. It's like a village with nobody in it.
