They are made to get you on paper.. not to zero the rifle. you still have to dial it in yourself since the boresighter is a straight line and a bullet arcs.

Never bothered with one. Another gimmick that can be easily replaced with 2 minutes of work.

Done a post on it a while ago.

All correct, they are ony designed to get you on paper and save a few rounds. Ther is no substitution for getting out and zeroing in the rifle with a shoot adjust shoot adjust system. I use a BSA bore sighter in work when a customer is picking up a new rifle its a two minute job in the shop that can save a bit of time when zeroing in.

    sniperman,
I would say that a boresighter is something that I want, not something that I need.

However, in the early stages of shooting/learning, it may be something that you need.

I find that a level rifle is something that I need, nowadays and that the boresighter is something that I want.

When I shoot cheap ammo: 223, 270, 308, or even 30-06, I really do not mind throwing a few extra rounds down range. However, when I start shooting the 338 Win Mags, 12ga sabots (I'm in the States...), Norma, Nosler, Lapua, Sierra, and the other high end stuff, I really like having the boresighter. When every shot downrange is costing, $2, $3, $4 or more, a boresighter can quickly become a good investment.

Technically, you only need two rounds to sight in when shooting close up, no boresighter required. Here's how.

    1) Get yourself a big piece of paper and thick (1 inch) black lines vertically and horizontally. Fully secure (like in a gun-vise) the rifle with the cross hair on the bull's eye.

    2) Fire a round at say 100 yards. Again, make sure the reticle is still on bull's eye.

    3) Find the hole on the paper and click the scope to the hole you just made.

    4) Adjust the rifle so that the cross hair is back on the bull's eye. Secure and fire a second shot. You should be spot on the bull's eye now.

The boresighter is great as you are able to initially see where the barrel is pointing, even at 100yards. Using the boresighter and clicking the scope can help get you closer to the bull's eye before a shot is fired.

There are of course many other variables to consider when shooting longer distances. Do you zero a cold barrel or warm? How about a cold dirty barrel or a cold clean barel? However, when you get to this level, you will probably have the boresighting problem solved.

Another problem is how do you know your scope is leveled? Even worse, occasionally, manufacturers make reticles that are not aligned with respect to the body/turrets of the scope.

Even more fundamental, how do you know your barrel/receiver is level? How can your scope be level, if the receiver has not first been leveled?

You first have to start with a leveled barrel before you can level your scope or determine if there are any issues with the reticle.

Have a look at this applet, it gives a nice visual as to the problems when the rifle-scope are not properly level.

From experience; the cheap laser ones are dire ****e but the likes of the Hawke Shotsaver I have found to be extremely useful to get your rifle sorted in three shots.

The added beauty is that once the rifle is zeroed you can stick the boresighter back up the spout count the deviation from center on the grid and to re-zero you just need to dail to the spot again.
