U23 course was 43 km and the senior was 57 km. Tony martin won the senior event but at a slower average speed than Mullen, granted Mullen's course was shorter but that is still incredible.

For Mullen to be getting these kind of results at 19 - is this as impressive as it sounds? Is it much too early to really tell or are the expectations very very high?

Ryan Mullen is excellent and looks capable of being world u23 tt champ in the next few years, see article link which demonstrates how a top 5 in this worlds champs was a probability.

So there could be a few more golden Kurt Bogaerts moments down the line.

Delighted for Mullen getting the an post gig.Big powerful guy. Will be a great team rider and will surely get the odd prologue or two. With Kurt guiding him a higher position in the Worlds TT next year is on the cards.Sorry to see Ronan Mc Loughlin parting company with them though. He's a real heart on the sleeve rider and i never pitied anyone, like i did him, when he was caught with the line in sight,in the stage of the ras in to Bundoran in his home county in 2012.
Delighted also to see Chris Jensen get another 2 yrs with Saxo Bank.Blonde Dane with a dub accent.Useless info time.He was Leinster U12 Champ in '01.

It was live on the official website. And I know Setanta Ireland and BT Sport have coverage (I don't know if they showed the ITT live) :)

Nice article by Ian O'Riordan in The Irish Times about Ryan Mullen's performance in the ITT yesterday.
“Oh, my arse,” he says, not long after getting off his bike from what would prove to be the eighth best ride of the day. For Mullen, still only 20 and mixing it here with competition of considerably greater experience, it was another of the rides of his young life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,506 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Surprised no one has posted this...

Ryan Mullen won both the U-23 and Elite National Time Trial Championships this evening. Eddie Dunbar was very impressive and took silver, just 25 seconds back. Martyn Irvine was third.

    From Stickybottle:
But between now and Sunday morning, when Mullen lines out to defend the combined U23 and elite road race crown he took in Multyfarnham last year, he is now the holder of the elite and U23 road titles and time trial titles; the first man to achieve that feat.

It's incredible than Mullen is only 20. Serious serious talent.

For me Dunbar's performance was outstanding, 25 secs behind a TT specialist with no disc wheel and a pretty un-aero bike position compared to Mullen and Irvine and he's younger than Mullen.
Two young lads we'll see in the Pro ranks in a few years I'm sure...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,221 ✭✭✭thekooman

no Di2 either for Dunbar which i hear from some guys makes a world of difference on a TT bike compared to a road bike

Yeah, based on those photos on Sticky Bottle, there is an obvious difference in position between Dunbar and Mullen/Irvine!

Incredible performance from Dunbar, in all honesty. If he stays injury free there is no telling where he could go on the Pro Circuit. And the 2 lads should just be coming into their prime just when Nico and Dan are finishing theirs. Exciting times ahead ........ Hopefully !!!

Presumably this was a Stagiaire deal? If so, he has been very quiet about it on twitter - which seems unusual. Hopefully it will come together soon enough for him.

Has anyone figured out how he ended up on the startlist for the Tour of Utah?

Continuing its tactic of working with some of the most promising young riders in the sport, the Cannondale-Garmin team has announced that Patrick Bevin and Ryan Mullen will join the team in 2016.

One Irish rider out, one Irish rider in!

Does this mean that this year is his last opportunity to win a gold medal at the under-23 World TT Championship? Aren't World Tour cyclists disallowed from taking part?

Next year there will be five Irish riders at World Tour level. When last did this happen?

    Nicolas Roche
    Dan Martin
    Phillip Deignan
    Matt Brammeir
    Ryan Mullen

You'd have to back as far as Roche, Kelly, Kimmage, and Early before there was this many riders at elite level...

Neither Brammier nor Bennett are at WT level. With Bennett it's only a matter of time however.

Never heard of the first 2 who put 1-2 minutes into the rest......

Second place is current World ITT U23 champ and was also 2nd at the Euro ITT Champs.

Interview from Ryan Mullen with Shane Stokes yesterday.

    https://cyclingtips.com/2017/11/poised-big-breakthrough-mullens-quest-time-trial-gold/

Good interview, sounds like he's looking forward to the move. Says he expects a 15-20 watt improvement from gear alone next year. Sounds like a lot but he put out 440w for an hour so maybe a 5% improvement, doesn't sound too far fetched. Going from an older TT bike too to one of the faster TT bikes around (speed concept).

Has an eye on some of the classics too. Would be great to see him do well in them.

Off topic but I don't see how different equipment is going to get more watts out of him. Maybe he might go faster for the same watts?

Yes different equipment delivers power savings rather than increases in output

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,435 ✭✭✭joey100

Yep I'd guess that's what he meant, he does say he expects 15-20 watts improvement in the article but I'd say he was coming from it in terms of a time saving. I'm not sure he will get that much, but the bike might be worth a few.

His position looks very aero so will be interesting to see if it changes much with Trek, mentions potentially wind tunnel testing with them so might see slight changes.

It is fairly standard to refer to power "savings" in this way. Saving=improvement whichever way it is looked at

He is very aero. Wind tunnel testing can improve that. Bike geometry can pretty much be replicated with any brand, but bike/rider combination can vary power requirements for the same speed. Obviously wheels also impact big-time, and wheels can react differently on different bikes, and particularly in different wind conditions.

Of course theory and practice can also be different, and the competition will in all likelihood be looking for similar savings particularly as technology moves on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 519 ✭✭✭coach22

I was always surprised by the front wheel that was on his Cannondale TT bike most of the time. I didn't look very aero compared to some of the competition. Looked about 50mm max depth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭fondriest

Was talking to him in Wexford during the summer and didn't seem impressed with the Cannondale TT bike , the one he currently rides is an ex Peter Sagan bike with a mix of components on it . Apparently there is too much flex in the current model so he rides the older version .
So I'd imagine the thoughts of getting his hands on the Trek is a bit of extra motivation for him .

The Cannondale TT bike is old school. It compares really poorly with the newest fast machines from Trek, Lapierre, Pinarello, Canyon, Giant and Specialized.

Ryan just took 1st place in the TT stage at the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina, great start to the year for him. Nice to see the national champs jersey on display too. Gas the Spanish commentary calling him Ryan Mule-in :D
