Ladies, 'Learn to Lift Workshop :)

    So,
as many long time lurkers of this forum will know G'em, COH and Jayroc held a 'Ladies introduction to Weight Training' a few years ago for the ladies of this forum. This workshop was designed to give women the confidence and the knowledge to train with weights. (Link to previous thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055936775 )

I was fortunate enough to attend this workshop all them years ago and fell in love with weight training straight after. I had previous expereince with the ole 'Pump and Tone' classes in the gym I attended at the time. These classes gave me results at the start but never truely gave me that sense of satisfaction that I was getting stronger or that self confidence that starts to develop within women who lift heavy.

I'm very grateful to G'em, COH and Jayroc for getting me started on the road to weight training and since then I have competed in both Powerlifting and Weightlifting Competitions :) And could NEVER see myself do anything gym-wise but lift heavy. As a result of them getting me started on my journey to weight training Ive decided that I would like to enable others to begin their journey :) I've enlisted the help of Hanley and he is very supportive of the idea. He has kindly offered his expertise and his gym, Revolution Fitness as the venue for the workshop. It's quite an apt venue as he has quite a few female clients training in Revolution Fitness that can squat and deadlift over 100kg!!!!! And these are not big, burly women by any means.

The funny thing about the initial workshop that I attended was, when I first saw it advertised I was dying to attend it but was too afraid that I'd be too weak and everyone else would be better than me etc...so I didnt actually go to it!! Can you believe it? I knew it was on, was dying to go...but was too afraid...lol! A few months passed and the guys decided to hold another workshop due to the demand...this time I refused to let my fears stand in the way. I went, enjoyed it thoroughly and within 2 months was squatting 1 x bw and deadlifting 1.5 x bw having never squatted or deadlifted before...Roll on another few months and I entered my first Powerlifting Competition and set a World Record Deadlift in my bodyweight class :D I deadlifted 118.5kg whilst weighing only 50kg at the time...I think I shocked myself just as much as I shocked everyone else :) Roll on another year or so and I started to train and compete in Weightlifting and I absolutely love it! I love self confidence it gives me, I love the sense of satisfaction when you get a PB.

Our Introduction to lifting for Ladies workshop will be mostly practical and will cover the basics of what girls need to know to get started:

-why lifting doesn't make you big and bulky
-how to perform the basic lifts safely and effectively
-what do you need to know to design your own programs?
    -nutrition strategies for busy people
    -understanding your relationship with food

There will probably be about 10-20 places over a number of workshops, over two weekends. So, if you would like to put your name down for it, feel free to comment on this thread or to PM me directly. Places will fill up fast as Hanley has already said a mail like this to his entire email list....and we know how big that is!! :D

If you have any questions or queries feel free to PM me directly!

I only supplied the gym... it was gem's baby!

A lot of people learnt a lot of useful stuff at the two that were run in raw though. Definitely a worthwhile way to spend a few hours.

One thing - just to anyone that is planning on attending. You are going to be getting some top class coaching from some really good people (and Hanley!). Please realise that nobody is making any money from these things, but treat it like you paid whats its worth for the time (couple hundred quid). Last time round there were loads of last minute cancellations etc. and its not really fair on the people boxing off time to teach you if you say you're going and don't turn up because you decided to go out the night before!

If there's a spare place, could I come too? I was at one of the original ones, t'was awesome but sadly a mix of work and buggering my leg meant I didn't get to apply what I knew and then I got lazy :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭calfmuscle

I'd love to come along but I play rugby on Sundays but the league is finished 13th of November so if it is on after that I can come to the whole thing?

What days/times will suit people on this?
(9am-1.30pm on Saturday's are out because the gym is open then)

What would you REALLY like to cover?

    What's your BIGGEST struggle?

...the more we know, the more we can help :)

You can indeed come, Jessibelle! Would you believe you were actually in my group at that workshop....think it was G'em that was showing our sub group how to lift! :) (Don't get freaked..I'm a teacher, have a strange ability at remembering names!!)

Calfmuscle-I'll put you down as a provisionally yes!.

Can't believe the response to the thread, both in the comments believe and from the girls that have PMd me!! :)

Hey, Stenchblossoms great to hear that you're interested too. But this workshop is really designed for girls who have never trained with weights before or that have trained with weights but do not get regular coaching and aren't quite confident by themselves yet.

I'm pretty sure seeing as Hanley is your coach that your well equipped with the skills to lift properly :)

    Hi,

In answer to your questions -
What days/times will suit people on this?
Any time at the weekend will work for me.

What would you REALLY like to cover?
Compound lifts - squats, deadlifts etc - the biggies that look like they could do serious damage if you do them wrong :)

    What's your BIGGEST struggle?
I'm soooo weak - especially legs!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,224 ✭✭✭Heat_Wave

Can you put me down too please? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,224 ✭✭✭Heat_Wave

    Also to answer the Q:

Sundays would be ideal for me as I work Saturdays.

How to fail! I think I could lift more but Im always on my own in the gym and dont want to get in a heap if I cant finish a lift. :)

I'm away for some of November but if the dates work, I'd really love to go. Have started weight-lifting the past two months (based on all the advice on here) but keen to learn more! And a group format would be great as can find 1:1 PT a bit too intense sometimes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,793 ✭✭✭gymfreak

    Excellent!!!!

Challo and Heatwave your names are down too!! :)

I'll probably review this thread tomorrow and collate these names with the PMs Ive received.

Am REALLY excited about this! :D

Fair play to gymfreak & James McShirtoff for setting this up.

I remember the night out that ensued after the last one, mad craic & great conversations.

I'd recommend any girl even considering this to go for it, let the iron bug bite you, you won't regret it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 113 ✭✭Soilse

Yes this as Im alone in the gym and am always too afraid to push myself too much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 941 ✭✭✭Typer Monkey

I'd love to attend. I'm almost 9 months post having a baby. I've been meaning to get into lifting for ages and think this'd be the perfect time. I'm returning to work in December and work shifts incl weekends so a weekend in November would be perfect timing too

Could I be put on the list please?

I started a couple of months ago, but was then banned from exercise by my physio until my gammy knee went back to normal and I'm just about to start off again :)

Wow. Unreal response so far. Can't wait to help you guys out :)

Depending when it is I might be interested...well I'm very interested but a little apprehensive!! I'll keep an eye on this thread to keep up to date :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,793 ✭✭✭gymfreak

Gadetra and Stheno your names are down!

Dearg Lady, please dont be apprehensive at all!! Like I said in the original post when I first saw workshops like this being held I skipped out on the first one...I REALLY wanted to go but was too nervous that I'd be weak in comparison to everyone else. And tbh, putting my name down for the second workshop was the best thing I ever did!!

We want this workshop to be about helping women gain the confidence to use weights. No one will honestly be asked to do anything that they're not comfortable doing and it will be structured around the needs of an absolute beginner..it really doesnt matter how strong or weak you are, its all about building a foundation and working on the basics.

Hopefully, I might have put any apprehensive lurkers at their ease there :)

NOW is the time to ask!!!

    Can I come too
I've been put on machine weights on the gym to start off with and using a basic padded bar for squats which is barely even 10kg but I still don't know about all those compound ones and the "design your own program" bit would be especially useful
