Go easy on me now because i know nothing about ferrets.

I know theres this thing that goes around its neck for when it stays underground, then yoy can find it. What im wanting to know, do these trackers pin point exact location or would it be just in a sq area and youve to keep digging to find it. Do they even come with a sort of thing on them to tell you how deep its down.

The reason im asking this question is that i have a pipe running under my garden and i need to find the exact location of it because have to dig down and pit in a plastic man hole and dont want to be digging the whole garden up trying to find tge pipe. I was thinking of putting the ferret down the pipe with the exact amount of line attached to it so when it cant walk anymore, ill know where to dig down. This is probably wishful thinking on my behalf but i thought id ask before i go ripping the garden up.

It will be builders string, not a rope.Cant see it getting tangled up, its only about 15M long. You see, theres a bend at the other end of the pipe, hencce why i wamt to use a ferret. I wouldnt be able to bend the chimney poles, already thought about that.

    How about a Cobra rod?

    DUCT_ROD_COBRA_CONDUIT_ROD__Duct_Snake.jpg

If that fails can you not dig around the place where the pipe starts, find the direction, measure out the distance and dig down.

I don't use ferrets but cannot see it being anymore accurate than a ferret finder (to within a foot or so).

The pipe isnt going in a straight line thou, it takes a big curve lol. The reason why i suggested a ferret is that i know a guy with a few .

A ferret prob wont even go 2 the end of the pipe unless there's a rabbit at the end of it!

Why don't you go to your local hire shop and ask them for a services locator. There is also a smaller version of the cobra that cass put up used for fishing cables into trunking and conduit systems. The ferret idea may work but I bet that if the ferret gets to the bend and doesn't see any light or smell any rabbits it will turn and come back.

If you get two welding rods or any heavy gauge wire, bend it in the shape of an L. Hold one in each hand like you would a pistol, not tightly mind, just let them rest in your hands. Walk over the area with the pipe, holding your hands about 12" apart pointing forward. When the rods cross over each other you are over the pipe.
This will find pipes, electrical cables, flowing water and other vessels such as bottles etc. If you quarter the garden you will map the route of the pipe and rule out other items below ground. It wont tell you the depth but it would likely be under two foot anyway.
    Handy old time tool kit!

Is there a problem with the pipe that it needs the man hole fitted.
    What's the pipe used for.

You can just as easily put the ferret collar on the end of a set of drain rods (with a bit of protection) and then trace out the movement of the rods through the pipe with the finder (often an old radio tuned to the collar frequency) mark the route with dry sand.
