Gough's in Little Mary Street off Capel Street have the Mora range in stock at seriously good prices, actually cheaper than online!

The High Q is only, I think, €10 in either carbon or stainless and has an 11 cm blade. Mora do bigger as well - all excellent value.

Brother has one, very useful for the task at hand but the lock on his broke in the first season of use. Now he's not known for his light touch and would be an excellent product tester when it comes to ruggedness, if you catch my drift. Still it was disappointing to have it fail.

I must get him to look up the warranty info for it.

Bought myself this for this year:

    443-3-1380124661.jpg

When deciding the only "complaint" i could find was that the smaller of the two knives did not lock into the sheath. I found this to be crap. The people testing must have no upper body strength as my one, with a little force, clips into the sheath the same as the larger knife.

They are pricey (around €80) but extremely sharp, and versatile. The smaller trimming knife is duller than the larger one which is by design so as to allow you to trim without fear of slicing through parts you don't want to.

The grips are comfortable and fit my hand perfectly, and the sheath is hardened plastic and light. It has a built in sharpener on the bottom of the sheath which is very handy for a quick sharpening if needed. The gut hook works perfectly and is as sharp as the blade. They also have an "elongated" metals base on the main knife to allow for hammering (for tough cuts).

All in all i'm delighted with it and it's performance.

Best on the market i think is the EKA Swingblade, can't find a knife to beat it
http://youtu.be/uN7FcRSW6GA forward video to 1min20 seconds and see what you think. They don't refuse and edge and they hold an edge of a long time and come with nice pouch. They are about 90 euro delivered. I've 3 friends with them and they say theres no better.

I found a few Irish sites that listed it, but they seemed to be buying in and then selling on. So i decided to cut out the middle man and order myself.

They are available in the UK, EU, and USA. I bought from the UK and had it within a week. Much cheaper in the US but was nervous about customs, and it getting through, etc so paid a little more and bought closer to home.

I have lots of knives but for the difficult dissection in the pelvis I find the Puma Buddy knife best , short curved blade, narrows to a point, easy to mobilize the tissues around the rectum.

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread but I'm wondering what is a good fixed blade knife with good edge and can be easy sharpened if needed? I had a john bowie knife with leather pouch that i got a few yrs ago in a sale for €100 roughly and left it on the roof of the car and well you can guess the rest

As landyman said it's the Gerber Myth Field Dress Kit.

I bought mine from Hennie-Heyes on sale. It, and a headlamp reduced from 44 to 10. The while lot cam to €117 including shipping, but that was sale prices.

It's a great site with a crap load of stuff, but they can be a bit dear. I always check the bargain section or sale items first.

I ordered that knife Cass recommended myth field dress Gerber last Saturday from knife depot in the states I received it Thursday delivered to the door 65 euro no hassle

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,697 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

    Nice one.

As said above they are much cheaper in the states, but i wasn't sure having got screwed on the last two things i ordered from the states so ordered from the UK. I suppose in retrospect even if i had got hit with some hidden tax or duty it still would have been either slightly cheaper or the same.

Every day is a school day. :D

    How do you find it?
