No you cant fire a 20 in a 12, they are a very dangerous combination, a 20 bore will fit into the 12 and allow a 12 bore cartridge to be loaded as normal which if fired will blow the barrels and your face/hands to bits in the process.

    Yes and no.

No. You cannot take a 20ga catridge and place it in a 12ga bore. More than likely, the 20 will wedge in to the barrel. When/if struck by the firing pin, I would plan on some form of catastrophic failure.

The caliber/guage of the firearm will be engraved on the barrel. More modern shotguns, will also often state the maximum size cartridge. Such as 2 3/4, 3, or magnums.

There are a few instances that you can interchange rounds that sound different, but diameter wise, are not. However, even when the bullet is the same, the brass, powder, and primer may be different.

For example, you can shoot .38spl out of a .357mag, but don't try .357mag in a .38spl. Also, you can shoot 223 in a 5.56, but shouldn't try the other way around.

Yes. There are sleeves for 12ga shotguns...
...WHICH I BELIEVE ARE ILLEGAL IN IRELAND...
    ... that allow you to shoot just about anything through the barrels: 20ga, 28ga, 410, 22lr, 9mm, 45acp, ...
    51JE-zJXSGL._SX342_.jpg

Basically, it is just a piece of metal sized to the 12ga, bored to fit the desire cartridge/round.

Again, before you go off to Amazon and attempt to buy them, I believe, but do not quote me,
THAT THEY ARE ILLEGAL TO USE IN IRELAND.
I am no lawyer solicitor, however, I believe that when you alter the caliber of a firearm in Ireland, you void your license which is caliber specific.

Again, I am unsure as to why, but am confident that they are illegal.

Also, whenever you take your life in to your own hands, do your own homework and research. Use the internet as anecdotal information.

No disrespect here, but if your asking this question you need to brush up on some basics of shot gun handling.

I use a simple demonstration to show the potential dangers of mixing 20gauge and 12gauge ammo. Using spent cartridges I drop a 20g into a 12g barrel off my pump and then place a 12 gauge cartridge into the breach. With the 20g stuck in the throat of the barrel the 12 gauge fits perfectly into the breach.

Rule of thumb shooters should never carry 20g and 12g together as it is all to easy in the heat of the moment to drop a 20g into 12g, close the gun and get the inevitable 'click' and then open up the gun 'see an empty chamber' drop a 12g in and the next pull of the trigger can be disasterous to both shooter and or gun.

Err not quite illegal...... IFyou have liscenses for both calibers IOW to posses this you have to have a say12 GA,and a 22lr.
Nothing in law to say that a 22 cant be fired out of a 12 GA.
They are kind of handy and useless at the same time.Handy if say you wanted to pop a trapped critter without blowing your trap apart at 6feet with a 12 GA. But useless above any distance beyond 15 feet as they are mostly un rifled tubes[However there is always an exception to the rule].
In the shotgun side of things they are handy for either training people who might have flinch problems by using a 20 gA in the 12 GA or getting more life out of an antique 12 GA by using the 20GA loads or getting an old 10 GA working with12 GA ammo.

Again Cevat Emptor on this advice.Mileage may vary depending on which FO/Super/mate down in the club etc you talk to.

    Anyways,back to 20 GA and 12 GA.
20 GA is nowadays always in Yellow shells to prevent double loads of 12 GA on a 20 and usually catostrophic and no doubt fatal results when the trigger is pulled..
ALWAYS keep the 20 GA well away from 12 GA ammo in storage,or shoots and even buy yourself a different cartridge bag or belt to store them when in use.
That way you get used to using a specific item which each calibre and suddenly realise you have either the wrong gun or ammo with you or on you.
Its way too easy to get cartridges mixed and in the haste of a shoot to have a double load.

So If I wanted to get one of these adapters to fire .22 birdshot from my 12g o/u would I be breaking the law? I dont want to have to take the silencer off every time I want to shoot something with the bird shot and its only good out to about 15 or 20 feet. I use it for dispatching vermin, either rats in the live catch trap or magpies and greys in the larsen.

I did not know, but then again I have not owned a shotgun since 96, and all I did with that poor thing was chuck slugs through it

IF you have a .22lr liscense and a 12 GA liscense. You "should be" good to go.

If you dont know the difference between 12 gauge and 20 gauge you should sell your firearms and take up fishing .

Knowing the capabilities of your firearm is the most important requirement for any firearm owner . Asking can you fit a different cartridge into a firearm designed for a particular cartridge betrays a lack of knowledge i find disturbing wirh regard to the safe handling of that firearm . It is something i have little tolerance for.

Asking can you fit a different cartridge into a firearm.

    Asking is better than doing.

Would hate to think a person would be to afraid to ask a question due to ridicule and faux outrage myself to be honest

A photo of a box is a start, but here is a better way of being helpful.

It is something i have little tolerance for.
Without trying to single you out did everyone that has posted with a smart comment or simply to ridicule the OP start out knowing everything. I know i didn't, and i'm still learning.

Whether the OP is asking as a wind up, genuinely, or simple curiosity the question provides a opportunity to pass one some knowledge, experience or help. Not only to the OP, but to everyone else out there that are too afraid to ask for fear of ridicule or looking foolish.

For christ sake lads it's a discussion forum and to limit questions to an expert or higher level of shooting experience would spell the end for the forum. The only difference i've seen between people posting so called silly questions and those that don't is those that don't are either afraid to do so or have already made the mistake.

Cut people some slack. If you cannot do that then just don't post.

I actually commented because once upon a time, I had that exact question.

I had a 12ga shotgun and found myself in a position to buy 1000rds of 20ga at about 25% retail price. I of course bought the lot.

Then I wondered if there was anything I could do to use it in the 12ga. That's when I learned of sleeves as there was no tube kit for my shotgun.

I thought the sleeve would be a great idea. I shoot 20ga shotguns better than 12ga shotguns, because I can swing the smaller, lighter 20ga faster. My rationale was to handicap myself with the larger, heavier, 12ga shotgun by using less lead, 20ga cartridges, so that when I went back to the 12ga cartridge, I would shoot better.

But shortly after I came across a great deal on a 20ga Citori and bought it because I had a 1000 rounds of ammo for it.:D

Lesson learned - buy more guns.
