Hello all. I was notified today that I have been selected to participate in the first round of the Irish EU Science Olympiad as a result of my Maths and Science results in the 2013 Junior Cert examinations. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anybody else has been invited considering some of you got Maths and Science A's too. I haven't researched it yet but it seems difficult but a great opportunity. I'll be flying the boards.ie flag.:pac:

Got an A in science but a B in maths :(.

    Got A's in both
Seems cool, no letter or anything though.

Got an A in both, can you apply/increase chances of being picked or do they just contact your school and select you?
    Fingers crossed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭A97

Due to legal restrictions with ientifying minors and all that, they contact your school. My letter was dated yesterday, and I was called to reception during class. The principal gave it to me. My application form says that students are never directly contacted.

Just to note, I wasn't the only one to get A's in Maths and Science in my school but I was the only person invited.

I got A's in both to, but knowing my luck I didn't get it :( I really love science though..

I'm in the exact same boat.... :(
    Fingers crossed!

You have to get a high result in both, higher than 85%. I was told you need to get close to 100%. I'm certain that I didn't get 100% in either but I could have been in the 95%+ range.

Aww! :( I feel like I was in the 85-90 range in both of them

Pretty confident I got 100% in maths! Hated the science paper though, probably didnt hit the A+ :(

I didn't get into the Science Olympiad because I was too good, I would put all the rest of the candidates to shame. With my Cs ;)

I was invited too, A97 - was called to the Principal's office today! :D Got As in both (8 As altogether) but they must have been very high As to get in - I really really wasn't expecting that. So thrilled!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭A97

Cool. Well done. It's nice to see another boards member get it. Did anybody else in your school get invited or just you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Imaginary Friend

I was called to the principal's office with two other girls but no one else who'd just done the JC (I think the other two were in trouble actually :P). I think I was the only one. My principal said she'd never got that letter before :')

I got a letter too!!! YEEESSSSSSS.

One question though, can you apply for both the ijso and the ieuso

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 ChloSF98

Hey I got a letter too and was really happy , (I didn't think I had gotten such a high A in Maths and Science) but, what are we supposed to study for the exam in Dublin? And what is the exam like ? I'd love to get top 6 , but I have no idea what to start studying ! Anyone know ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭A97

Congratulations you two. Don't take my word on this but I think the IrJSO and IrEUSO are on simultaneously. With regards to study, I've been given no instruction but their FAQ says that they don't supply past papers.

Oh ... How should we prepare then ? Well done to you too :)

Was pretty surprised that a friend of mine didn't get a letter for the maths olympiad (well, at least not yet)

He has had consistent A's since first year, got 99% and 100% in both mocks we did and won the prism competition (he came first nationally)

pretty weird. Got an A in maths (and science too) :P

I was considered average in prism (I think) Got 12/20 or however many questions there were. But I did get the hardest ones right at the end right, because that's just how my brain works

It say you have to prepare your chosen subject from Physics, Chemistry and Biology at Leaving Cert OL standard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 ChloSF98

Okay thanks ! But what about the IrJSO ?because we have to do all 3 ..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭SeanIAm

I received the letter today and was delighted! I'm eligible for the IrEUSO one. The letter was scarce on preparation details I have to say. Any ideas on what to learn? Would love to get on the team!

I just noticed that I got an email from DCU regarding my selected science. I don't know which one to pick from Biology or Physics? Does anybody have any suggestions/recommendations as to which one they would pick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Imaginary Friend

A97, quadruple the amount of people do Biology as do Chemistry, and double the amount do Physics as Chemistry. (i.e. Chemistry = x, Physics = 2x, Biology = 4x)...something I was told by a friend. Statistically you've a better chance if you do Physics but I'd say do whichever you're best at, really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Imaginary Friend

Hang on, what time is the IrJSO exam?! Don't think it says on the letter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭A97

    http://www.euso.dcu.ie/ijso/irjso2011.htm

26 October. 12:00-15:00. That's the same time as our exam. I looked at the previous years, (Especially last year.) and last year, 33 did Biology, 27 Physics and only 12 Chemisty. I don't do Chemistry anymore so I'm definitely not doing it. I was strategically leaning towards Physics for the very reason that there will be less competition, but I'm not so sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Imaginary Friend

Whoops, I meant to say statistically you're better with Chemistry, not sure how that happened xD Thanks for the time! I'm dreading studying physics - don't get a choice in the IrJSO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭SeanIAm

Do students participating in IrEUSO get to pick a science? I was never given an option...Also, to what level are we expected to know it to?

Check the email you registered with and you should be asked to select a science. You should be around the level of OL LC standard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 93 ✭✭Imaginary Friend

How/what are you IrJSO-ers (and IrEUSO too, I suppose ;) ) studying? How's it going for you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 712 ✭✭✭MmmPancakes

Nevermind he got a letter in the end hahahah

So has anyone done any studying? If so, what?
    Thanks!!

Seriously I've done nothing, I wa hoping we weren't expected to do anything :(

    What preperation/study have you done?
Also are you doing the IRJSO or the EUSO?

I'm doing the IrJSO, which are you doing? I've been going through the Biology, Chemistry and Physics LC books. I have a feeling I shouldn't be telling you this (sabotaging my chances ;) ) but yeah, I'm trying to learn them as best I can. If you haven't started you probably only have time to look over the JC stuff...unless you're IrEUSO, then I don't know.

I too am doing the IrJSO but have done nothing :( I don't understand how you could cover 3 (even 1!) leaving cert courses in under a month?!

Anyways I have just been notified that I have been accepted into the Transtion Year UCD Physics course from the 2nd - 6th December which clashes with the IJSO in India from the 3rd to the 12th.

So yay, I have an excuse for not studying ;)

Why, WHY is life so difficult to manage?! I got told today that I was accepted for the UCD Physics thing - can't believe it's during the IJSO :( I've done so much work for the IrJSO that I'm not going to choose UCD over the possibility of IJSO, but ugh. Everything clashes with my schedule:( At least if I don't get the IJSO I have the UCD thing, I suppose. Unfortunately we have to accept or decline it a few days before the IrJSO.

I've nearly finished the Physics book though, then to look over my notes in the three subjects :P The courses aren't properly covered (I completely left out the experiments) In fairness, I do have a personal reason for wanting to get in ... there's someone I'm competing with ;)

Haha I wish I had your problem, there is no way I'll make the IrJSO due to not having opened a book ;)

Unless I am a really good guesser, y'know with it being Multiple Choice and all...

The answer is always 'C', when in doubt it's 'C' ;)

Ah well, at least you have UCD :) Yeah, maybe you'll guess them all perfectly by accident ;) You get a certificate anyway :)

Hey guys wishing you all the best tomorrow! At least we all get a certificate anyway :P

Oh and by the way, there's no dress code or anything is there ? :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 390 ✭✭A97

Good luck everybody. If I don't win, (Which is highly likely, let's be honest) I'd like one of you to.;)

I'm not aware of any dress code.

    Quick question:

Website states registration is from 10:30 to 11:45.. Does this mean we have to be there at 10:30 or we can turn up any time between 10:30 and 11:45?

    Thanks!

Well, I didn't win. That first Physics paper was insane. The second was a little easier, but there were still a good few tough questions. Did anybody win a medal?

There was no multiple choice in the end! Well, there were about 3 or 4 out of 43 total but I wasn't expecting that at all.
