At least one club in Ulster that I know of uses chip timing for most if its club tts and road races. The timing service is outsourced.

Anyway, not taking anything away from the result of the national hill climb. Of course with human error in the timing, the true time gap can be bigger as well as smaller.

Just wondering, does a national event like this have chip timing?

diff between 1st and 2nd was 0.7 sec according to sticky bottle. I've done time keeper for tt events and by eyeball and stopwatch the marging for error in the timing is huge, certainly within the realm of seconds, at least when I wasdoing it!
Yikes, 0.7sec, you could argue that human error could have decided the outcome ! (note: I'm not saying they got it wrong, just amazed how close it was )

0.7sec is 10 lengths in a greyhound race, in my misspent youth I'd have been very pi**ed off if I was more than a length out and we'd be doing splits as well.

If the timekeepers are experienced and know their equipment then I'd be fairly certain they got it right.

Any photos besides the ones listed on website? I'd say the were at least 10 photographers (with DSLRs) on the hill !

tbh a comparison with greyhounds is ridiculous unless they were running 2.4 miles up a hill at a smidge under 20km/h

FWIW with the times posted the gap would still be approx. 4.01 meters so unlikely the timekeepers would be that far out.

Dammit! Knew I went out too hard... if only the race was 500m long, I might've won!

Given the wind, and steep final 1.2k I had a rough pacing plan. Basically 48:52% power spending.

    It went like this:
Get up to speed, then back way back off on power until I see a rolling average around 445-455W. Keep at that for the first few minutes. Then on the 'flat bit', try to keep the power up around 440. 1.2k to go (you hit that ramp), all out to the finish. Last 5 minutes was close to 500w so I paced it very well considering the conditions and gradient.

Couldn't have done many things better on the day - my problem (the .7 seconds - probably more like giving away 20) was eating too much tasty food in Belgium when I was racing there. I put on a chunk of muscle mass (which helps), but also BF (yikes) and didn't lean down enough when I got home. I think I was giving up around 15-17kg to Mark! Now - if the race was up AND down the hill ;)

You paced it pretty perfectly. Your experience from 2010 must have been a big plus there. A lot of the lads who didn't know the hill defo went out too hard. It really punishes you in the final km if you have burned all your matches by the time you hit it.

That is some weight difference between yourself and Mark on the day. A couple of Kgs lighter would have swung it your way no doubt. Still 464w AP vs 429w in 2010 is a positive.

Hi all, looking for pictures of my son Sam on the hill - he was rider #2 (Bray Wheelers) and he was the first rider to crest.

Could only find shots of later riders.

    Thanks!

    Warren
